Title: List of must sees
Description: You must!

Cornfed - January 19, 2005 10:22 PM (GMT)
These are movies that aren't on my top 5, but they are defenitely worth seeing. Stupendous movies that will be (possibly underground) classics in years to come.

I'm not going to mention well known movies such as Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail. I assume everyone has seen things such as that.

From the comedy section:
What About Bob?
1941
Samurai Fiction (could arguably go in action or drama)
Hebrew Hammer
Cradle Will Rock
LArceNY

From the action section:
Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2, & 3
Sneakers
Musa the Warrior (film from Korea)
When Trumpets Fade
Red Shadow (could arguably go in comedy)

From drama:
Friends (film from Korea)
Ninth Gate
Girl Interrupted
25th Hour

From childrens (yes, there are a few):
Emperer's New Groove
Lilo and Stitch
Powerpuff Girls Movie
Milo & Ottis

Indie/documentaries:
Melvin Goes to Dinner
Quitting
Supersize Me

This is a small list to start with because I'm having a brain fart and can't remember any movies. Hopefully it get's some people started on movies to see, though. I'll probably come back and add more as I remember.

DarkVulpine - January 20, 2005 08:50 PM (GMT)
Both "1941," and The Ninth Gate are movies which I will, having seen them, add the disclaimer: Do not watch these movies while drunk. They get really freaky-deaky.

Other than that, pretty good list you got there. Of them I think I enjoyed What About Bob most of all (though I've only seen about half of the movies so far.....) and would like to add to the list: The Professional

PHD - January 23, 2005 01:55 AM (GMT)
Quite right, Quest for the Holy Grail is one of those movies that you'd like to presume everyone has seen, and knows at least 3 quotes from.

What About Bob is pretty funny... as is 1941. I haven't seen the others on your list though, but what about Mel Brooks films? Spaceballs is still my favorite movie, along with Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles, and his every movie he's ever made (except I've never seen To Be or Not To Be). And what about the Shrek movies? Both movies were hilarious!

Speaking of animation/Disney, did you not like Monsters Inc?

I guess it's hard to keep a listing of only 5 movies, isn't it?

Cornfed - January 23, 2005 03:15 AM (GMT)
I'm trying to keep the list to movies that people may have missed when they came out, or were to young to notice them, or what not. Also, I expect anyone who is interested in movies to have watched all of Mel Brook's work at least once by now.

Here's a few more movies to add to the list.

Comedy:
Pushing Tin

Drama:
Identity
Dark City

Backyard - January 23, 2005 10:38 AM (GMT)
I can't think of any quotes from quest of holy grail! :( Wait wait one's coming... "blue, no, yelowwwwwww!" ah crap, "help im being opressed!" Ha! I could only think of two! My memory doesn't work right. (I sometimes think I don't have one :/)

And slightly more to the point, I have not heard of 90% of the movies on your list. Ok it should probably be a little higher than that cause I think I've only seen Once Upon a Time in China which means I've heard of that, but not the others. Except the disney ones, except I'd never watch those even while being tortured. Oy, the pain! Sorry, gotta go find something to distract me from disney.

Correction, wait no I've seen Girl Interupted cause I was bored. I didn't think it was that great, but it had whats her name in it so it gets a bonus point.

Alright so if they tortured me by making me watch Disney, I'd start trying to convince them to try sensory deprevation on me.

Cornfed - January 26, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
Listen, Disney screws up royaly when it comes to live action movies, and most of their old animated movies. But their new stuff started to get better, then it got worse again. For a few years, they were putting out quality movies. Pretty much only the ones I listed.

Girl Interrupted is really only good if you identify with it in some way. Though, it does have really good acting in it, and the writing is spot on. Same with Manic, which is a new addition to the list.

New additions.

Indie
Manic

Action
Last of the Mohicans
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pact des Loups)

Drama
The Natural (One of the only Redford movies I like, I've seen most of them)

I'd also like to move a few movies from action to Kung Fu
Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2, & 3

New aditions to Kung Fu
The Dual
Butterfly Sword (with Tony Leung)
The Fist of Legend
Black Dragon
Snake in Eagle's Shadow
Master with Cracked Fingers
Rumble in the Bronx
Project A

Musa the Warrior can also be put in Drama. It's movie style is close to Crouching Tiger: Hidden Dragon, but it's less about the martial arts and more about the characters in the story. It also has Zhang Ziyi in it for those of you who are fans.

In case you didn't realize why Disney went down the drain.. it's because of the head man... Eisner... That man is more concerned about making money, than making movies. Everything he touches turns into manure. In case you hadn't heard... he broke the tie between Disney and Pixar... Why? 'Cause he's a dumbass. The company that brought you "Toy Story" (and 2) "Finding Nemo", and "Monsters Inc" which brought in a lot of money.. and he told them that his company could do it without them.

Then again.. practically the entire company hates his guts, and wants him out. And of course, I'm sure Roy Disney at this point is going "I told you so!!" as he was against Eisner from the beginning.

And now for something completely different...

"Brotherhood of the Wolves" is an excellent movie, as long as you watched it subbed. Everyone I talked to who hated it, of course was stupid, and watched the dubbed.

A good drama to see is "Playing by Heart" This movie quite disappeared a couple years ago. Why? Because of one line mentioning the Twin Towers. In case any of you forgot, all movies, with any spoken reference, or visual reference to the Twin Towers has been blacklisted.. Perhaps to be never seen again. But the movie's still good.

Nine Dead Gay Guys (An awesome movie from England)
Big Shot's Funeral

Drama
PTU (Foreign film from China)
The Emperer and the Assassin (from China)
Momento
One Hour Photo
The Talented Mr. Ripply

Tailor of Panima (arguably could go in Drama)

Cornfed - February 1, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)

The Life of David Gale

DarkVulpine - February 9, 2005 01:21 AM (GMT)
Awww snap! I nearly forgot to add my two favorite movies!

Snatch

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Same director (i think?) and many of the same actors. Great movies.

PHD - February 9, 2005 02:26 AM (GMT)
Ah, heck... while we're in British films (I believe they were british films... )

How about the old classic "A Fish Called Wanda"?
I mean, come on... Two of the cast members were from Monty Python!

Fierce Creatures wasn't nearly as good.

Cornfed - February 14, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
You didn't like Fierce Creatures? I thought it was hilarious!

I have a movie for this thread, but I forgot it's name...I'll get back to you people about it...sometime...

Cornfed - February 21, 2005 08:22 PM (GMT)
Aha! I found it! It's a comedy called Pentagon Wars. Hilarious and based on a true story! It has Carry Elwes and Kelsey Grammer staring in it. Great fun! Two-thumbs up!

PHD - February 22, 2005 07:47 AM (GMT)
Because I'm a Mel Brooks fan...

Twelve Chairs. Mel Brooks' first movie! It was originally a Russian book written not too long after the revolution, which was turned into a movie later. Then Mel Brooks took it and produced the American version years later.

Two more movies for the list

Red Riding Hood for those of you who like B movies. It's about a little girl that lives in Rome by herself. She's a serial killer that kills people she deems "sinners" and law breakers. It all goes to shit when her grandmother comes to take her back to the states.

The Bunker For people who like a)war movies and b)psyco-thrillers. They got Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Talented Mr. Ripley)

The movie is about a small unit of Nazi soldiers retreating into an old bunker. They were being pursued by at least a dozen allied soldiers. They get into the bunker, which is manned by an old man and a boy no more than 16 years old. They're low on ammo and totaly out numbered. The boy tells them about some tunnels that they could use to escape through, but only the old man has been down there. First, they say that there's a way out, but there's something down there that the old man isn't telling people about. It's a really cool psyco-thriller that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.

Reiji Azuma - March 26, 2005 07:55 AM (GMT)
Emperor's new groove. Great Disney movie and its not a musical ^_^

As far as comedy goes,"Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was a great movie. Its a little old but I found myself laughing many many times. Steve Martin's character is trying to get home for Thanksgiving, and John Candy's character isn't making it easy.

For independant:
Before Sunrise - a romance film about a couple that meet in europe and spend a night together. Throughout the night, they talk about their intrests, their beliefs, and even sex. It's a fun movie that has a very big sense of reality.

Before Sunset - the sequel to Before Sunrise. The couple meet nine years later and catch up. This film is superb, but you really need to watch the first one to really appriciate it. In this film, it's done in real time. For every minute that passes in real life, a minute passes in the movie. The characters are even more real in this movie than in the last. They're still the same people, but they've changed over the past nine years. It's incredible amounts of great if you enjoy movies about people, rather than events.

me and my friend just saw the ring 2 it was scary but funny!!!XD
i would deffinatly recomend it for fans of scary movies-^_^-

ForsakenRogue - April 27, 2005 03:43 AM (GMT)
I've got a couple things that I'd like to add on.

Action
The Mad Max movie series (this just goes without saying)
Deathrace 2000 (the future is orange. and killing pedestrians with a car is a sport)

Cold War-era thing
War Games (it's the 80's and an old AI tricks the US government with a Mutually Assured Destruction simulation)

I also don't think anyone has put down A Clockwork Orange either.

Cornfed - April 27, 2005 09:55 PM (GMT)
