Well I'm not discrediting anything, Spirited Away isn't the only best Ghibli film out there with a hugeassed rating. Princess Mononoke is another, My Neighbor Totoro is another, Millenium Actress is a fourth. Ghibli tries to make films that adhere to everyone's likes. So while some people might not like SpiritedAway, they may absolutely love PorcoRosso or Grave of the Fireflies.

I think there can be no 'best anime' since there are so many genres out there, so many titles, and so many different types of taste in the general population. But I can recommend these titles for people that I personally enjoy

Akira (old school favorite). Some may not like it, but it's one of the first if Not the first explosively popular anime movie in oldschool history.

A good portune of the Lupin3rd movies (specially Castle of Cagliostro and Memory of Walther). Each Lupin movie over the last 20+ years has been compiled and deviated by different anime producers. So while some movies are bad and some are good, there are a few in the batch that are Magnificiant and memorable.

As for Series animes, here are a few I recommend to people

FullMetal Alchemist, while recently shown on Cartoon Network dubbed, is one of the best series out there. I recommend watching it subtitled. The characters are catchy, I cried during the series, and there are just so many turns and items in the plot and characters that makes you notice new things every time you watch it.

Tenchi Muyo (the ova series) is also another great series I encourage people to watch. It's also another anime that was shown on cartoon network, although this anime was raped by the butchering american tv laws. Either way, the original untouched series is wonderful dubbed and subtitled. The plot is good, the characters are all Sevierly memorable. And the animation in the ova is very nice. There are other series in the Tenchi Muyo bloodline (such as Universe, Shintenchi, gxp) but I think the OVA is by far the best.

Oh, before I forget. Last Exile is a third great series I'm sure many people will enjoy. While I, myself, have only seen one episode of it, every person I've come across that've seen a good portune if not all the series enjoy it. And I'm not just saying mildly enjoy it either. These people comment on the series as if it's the best tasting dish of food in all of Eden. So that's my third series recommendation.

Is the Animatrix even considered Anime?? I own it, but I can only watch it once in a great while. Just not something I enjoy watching over and over.

Spirited Away was definitely a great movie. Slightly geared towards kids, but still excellent. You can always try to watch other Miyazaki films, ie. Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, & My Friend Totoro.

I never did see Submarine 6.. just never got to it.

Kelli, you enjoyed Akira? I hated that movie so much! I'm glad it wasn't the first anime I ever watched, or else, I'd probably hate anime today. I think I missed out on the point of it all...

But your preferred anime usually goes in line with what type of genre you like.
I myself enjoy comedies, romantic comedies, some drama, horror, and mind screws (Lain, Ghost in the Shell). I don't think they make a lot of horror animes though. Is Vampire Hunter D a horror? In my mind, I'd say no. Sure, plenty of blood, but I don't think it's horror.

Petshop of Horrors is a good horror... Unfortunately, they only made 4 episodes (but 10 manga books ^_^ )
An earlier horror.. possibly early 80's.. is Mermaid Forest, as well as Mermaid Scar. I haven't seen Mermaid Scar yet... but as soon as I recieve it in the mail...

I don't know what category it falls under, but has anyone seen The Twelve Kingdoms? It's so intriguing!

One of my personal favorites, as far as anime series go, is Now and Then; Here and There. The first time I saw this anime I was almost in tears. WARNING: Do not watch this anime if you don't like depressing stuff. It falls in the same category as Grave of the Fireflies, but it has a somewhat happier ending. Sort of bitter-sweet.. It's incredably well done, and frequently overlooked. It gets an A in my book.

KrazyKelli - January 26, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
=P Akira was the first anime I saw. But lupin was what got me into anime altogether.

I'd say Vamp Hunt D was more an action anime than a horror one. though both of those movies were good.

I honestly didn't like Petshop of Horrors. =P so we're even.

Blueseed, I Would say was a good anime.. But it had it's downsides. Wonderfully put together in 26 eps. Comedy, but drama. And the ending, Wow. My friend Bawled. But as said, it has the 'monster of the episode' sorta thing, which people find generic. And while the subbing was alright (specially Sakura Yamizaki), the dubbing was much better. However, the main character, Momiji, had a HORRIBLE dub. Even so, I still enjoyed the anime all the way through and watched it a few times over. Good bonus material at the end of every tape too ;) I'd rate it a little o'er Fushigi Yuugi, but not nearly as great as something godly like Mononoke.

People've gone on about how Beautifully Samurai Champloo was made, so I'll bring that up as well. Honestly? only seen the first two episodes.. but as you can see earlier on this forum, we babbled on about how Awe Inspiring the first episode was until the Second one came out! Fact, we still get ominus threads about how good Champloo is, and I hear they're starting a second series.. So that's worth checking out.

i ve' seen lots of anime and unfortunateley and didnt' list all of the ones i think are the best because i was in a hurry . and i had only those three in mind. and i have to add some more . akria is pretty cool as well as the others and theres like thousands of animes , that i could never see but i happened to just think of 3 of them on the top of my mind . well um i saw that millenium actress miovie but i couldnt understand it very well because of the subtitles and so i had no idea what was going on , and so i had no idea what it was about . as for the other anime anime-trix its is still cool but it actually depends on what epies you have seen , i just happenned to see this really tripy one that did have anome and computer anime . anyways also there s this anime movie called tekken and this one out in theater called apple seed that may be good . but still sub six is cool for me , and is just i guess one of my favs personally . and well anime in general is like a f -ing soga of non stop mahem cause theres so many . and well i swear i have seen all of those episodes and movies that all of you are talking about !!! and totoro was like my hero when i was 5 or seven ! he was like the rabbit person whom came to me in my dreams and said hi and gave me some magical seeds to grow in my backyard ! yeah well that was when i was like five or seven , but now i dont have magic anymore :( but well everyones got lots of opions and stuff and everyone likes all kinds of different animes .

and uh i saw this anime called R.O.D and it was intresting and i guess i could add it to the list as well as this anime movie called X . and i also would say that this one series is okay and its called sorcer hunters would be good to add to the never ending list . but just to say something of course there is no official list of The best animes , but remeber it was just my opion and what i had in mind but akrira does deserve an A+ as well . and here is just a note : watchig akria + coffe + a little soda + a sip of whiskey while watching it reallly late at night = one screwy drunk sounding person who is cranky in the morning .

and crap about akira , that one secene in akira where the medicated dude became overwhemlingly fat as h+ll and grasped the anime chick into his hands and squeezed the blood out of her and she blew up well that was just plain f***ing freaky and awsome and gory at the same time but mostly freaky ! crap i cant say enough curse words to explain it . but also that other scene where the chick got beaten up by the dudes - THAT WAS F-ING SICK . PURE SICK  but it was such a cool movie . and well i swear i have seen all of those movies and series all of you listed except for champoo loo . and there is an ongoing soga of animes that we will never see in THE HISTORY OF OUR LIVES . how curious i would be to know when im dead that i have missed possibly the best animes in the world , that i was not capbale of seening because there is possibly not a big enough percentage of living to be physically able to see every single anime in the world ! AND OF COURSE except for the c=rapy driving you insane ones that some people hate , :ph43r: that you wouldnt want to see anyways .

Azumanga Daioh - One weabsite refers to it as 'Its your life, but with Japanese school girls' or something like that. Some of the episodes had me on the floor laughing. Covering the entire high school career of these girls was definately more entertaining and more random than what I dealt with. Okinawa! XD

Noir - Another action series with dark roots. Its basically Chics+guns+NPC fodder+nicely woven plotline. The action was pretty good, but the major downfall was the number of flashbacks. I think you see the same flashback 15 different times with each flashback getting longer and more indepth (as in it starts out as 10 second flashbacks and ends with the entire 5 minute scene).

Martian Successor Nadesco - Its what happens when a rich company decides to build the most powerful space-warship and send it to mars to fight the bad guys with the most unlikely crew. This is one of the funniest space series I've ever seen. It even makes fun of mecha animes (which is funny since this is also a mecha anime). This also happens to be the anime with the record (to my knowledge) for using the word 'baka' the most from ep 1-the end.

Those are right now what i'll say are the best. I am a little biased towards comidies though, so keep that in mind.

PHD - January 31, 2005 12:44 AM (GMT)
I had a few problems watching Noir. The basic plot was interesting and fun to watch.. but somewhere, I started getting bored with it, so I skipped a disk or two, and went to the last one, when it all got interesting again ^_^. The ending was very good, and the soundtrack is quite awesome (I just bought it recently).

Nadeisco was hilarious! I loved watching that. How many other animes do you know where the characters really get into the animes that They're watching? Gecky Gengar 3!! And of course, the one episide, where the characters from GG3 are watching Nadeisco as if it's the anime was funny too. I have yet to watch the movie though. Maybe I'll rent it.

Sorcerer Hunters was awesome! Very fun anime!

And some more reccomendations...

I love Saiyuki! And I'm anxiously awaiting Reload to arrive in the States.

Ayashi No Ceres was a bit of a screwed up romance. It ended well at least. But I enjoyed it.

If you want an emotional roller coaster, I'd suggest Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. I don't even have the words to describe that kind of pain.

dark angel - January 31, 2005 10:31 PM (GMT)
oh yeah sorcerer hunters rule you are so right PHD. i luv carrot hes such a pervert and funny. and merrin ...oh merrin ^_^ is all i can say about him . well yet another anime has intriged my intrests as i must add it to the list . its called Rouni Kennshin and is a series . its cool and it has some moral plot in it , and is just plain awsome and wild . also i must add three other series called Wolf s' rain ,inushaya and cowboy bebop .Wolfs' rain is a series based on these pack of humans who can transform into wolfs ! its one wild show and its awsome to see a half human suddenly ......mutate their human teeth into wolf fangs and bite the Sh** out of people ! heh

and inushaya is about this guy with really long hair and liitle wolf ears that has this cool sword and well defeats evil and stuff . ITS SO WILD , and i luv the evil bastards that he fights ! this one episode that i saw just last saturday has this evil guy...who transformed into this big half spider evil monster piece of cr** and then was i guess fighting this other evil guy who looked a little like inushaya . the evil crapy spider man thing person was planning to absorb the other evil dude into his flesh so that he could become apart of him . and the look a like inushya dude dosent know it . and i apologize but i seriously dont know any of the characters names yet except for inushaya .( i just watch it recently from time to time . )

and well during this episode there was a bunch of evil demon monsters combined together to form some evil tribe outside that were like ragin g all around . and the point is that this show ROCKS . and well the last one called Cowboy Bebop is about three people mainly. theres this girl who looks like a boy and her name is ED and she acts kinda silly and has this computer . the other character is Spike who smokes alot and stuff and well just plain in the show. the last main character is this woman who gets in trouble and stuff and i forgot her name .. but cant seem to rember her own past .. and then theres this dude who um i guess hangs with them and has a plastic-iky arm thing. and they have ship and they do stuff altogether . and so this is three more animes that i like and that i could think of to add on . ;) and uh sorcere hunter chocolate rules ! : AND honestly just to keep in mind i think japan deserves the best cartoon award !

oh yes and i totally forgot , but theres this one last anime series that i must talk about ! its called The Record of Lodoss war . i happened to just rent this sereis at block buster one day , and lemmi tell you its six hours long , and is a two dic feature . first off here are the characters : a guy named Parn , a girl named didlete , a pope or baptist , and a ssorcer named slate all travel together on this long quest . anyways along the way they eventually meet a mercenary and a berserker . they somehow join the group and LOTS of things happen , and it takes place during the time of castles & dragons age . Parn is like a sowrdsman or a noble i might add , and well the whole story is basically about them altogether on this big quest as well as deafeating the evil that will cast upon their kindom and the evil guys using didlete as a sacrifice for it .Parn and the gang try to save her as well as the kindom . its cool but the end of this first sereis fell apart a little (not much ) and also a huge battle or 2 featuring good against evil happens in this first series . and saying so about it also and sorrowfully adding it to the never ending list . buyt really i recommend all of these series to watch on TV. or rent . Cowboy bebop , inusyha , and wolfs rain all go on cartton network late at night on saturdays . as well as for rouni kenshin i have no idea ! and for record of lodoss war you would have to rent , and i know as a fact that they have it at block buster . well okay im done finally ! :ph43r:

If you like InuYasha, Wolf'sRain, and such.. Keep in mind that they have specific forums in the AnimeForums part of AR. Feel free to make threads in said catagories.

=P I like saiyuki too, PHD. mmm... Bishilicious. About as bishilicious as Reideen.

Cornfed - February 1, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
Ugh! Inu Yasha! UGH! Saiyuki! Wolf's Rain...meh...

Inu Yasha is way too long. While things do happen in it, it's 90% filler and 10% quality.

Saiyuki...people's heads don't sit in front of the neck. Faces don't look like that. Art aside, predictablity has never been my favorite quality of and anime, ever.

While I have nothing substantial against Wolf's Rain, I don't find it all that great. animation quality is so-so. I think the frame rate needs a bit of work. But all-in-all it could've stood more funding.

Azumanga-Daioh is hilarious. Great fun for all.

Nadesico was good. During jr. high, I kinda had a thing for Ruri.

Noir I haven't seen all of, but I liked what I saw.

Now I've got to go see my doctor.

PHD - February 1, 2005 08:27 PM (GMT)
Just make sure the doctor doesn't prescribe the insane house again. ^_~

Two more suggestions from my side!!

Haibane Renmei - Same creator as Lain, just not a brain screw anime, but it's a good drama. And I love the ending song (Blue Flow).

Kaleido Star - Comedy/drama. It's slightly more cutsey and stuff. I haven't seen the last disc yet thouth.. I have to wait until I see my fiance again... ::Cries::

Cornfed - February 3, 2005 11:12 PM (GMT)
Ahh, Haibane Renmei! Such a good story. Great story. Fabulous story. Magnificently done. It was scored so well. I love the music. It was a magnificent idea exocuted perfectly. I give it a 10 out of 10!

On another topic:
How did you know my doctor prescribed that already? Are you spying on me?!

PHD - February 4, 2005 01:27 AM (GMT)
No... ::rubs hands menaically:: I just know everything! I'm psychic! ... Or was that psycho? I forget now... ^_^

Cornfed - February 4, 2005 04:58 AM (GMT)
So then do you know what I'm thinking at you? *rubs head and aims it at PHD* Can you tell me? Hmmm?

PHD - February 4, 2005 06:04 AM (GMT)
::Stares at Cornfed, and looks horrified:: Hey now!! That's just dirty!

Cornfed - February 5, 2005 10:13 AM (GMT)
 I didn't...it's not...oh..
