Title: The best of the best.
Description: I need to expand my collection.....

Rancor - February 10, 2005 01:26 AM (GMT)
First off, I'd like to open with a little statment on how a man like me lives his life.

I live my life seeking many a form of entertainment. Maybe intellectual challenges, maybe adrenaline rushes, maybe poetic moving emotions....many things. Ever since I was a little kid, I have been drawing many of my entertainment pleasure from the wonderful electronic media known as Video Gaming. Through out time I have played games that seem to go beyond the level of what people percieve them as. I've played games that have moved me, excited me, scared me. I'll admit that I've even cried during certain parts of playing video games....

To me, the anonmyous code netizen known as Rancor, I -live- for my video games. Its a passion I have, deep down in my existance. You may either be nodding your head in understandace right now, or you may be going "Holy Shit dude, GET A LIFE". No matter though.

Now then, what is the purpose of this thread? I have played many a game, though I know for a very fact that I havent played enough. I'm getting a nice big chunk of change, and I plan to simply expand my collection. I want good gems of the past, games that go above and beyond the expectations. This sounds pretty nerdy and pathetic, but I want games that -will- do that old school sensation of movement. Yes, I want a game that -moves- me, that draws me in. I havent played a game that does that in awhile...

So now, I ask all of you to assist me if you will. What are the best of the best games out there, what would you suggest this gamer buy? Why should I track it down? Why do you suggest it? What has it done for you?

I'll be open to all types of genres....so anything will be good.

If you wanna get oldschool, I'll start with snes. Everything i list will be an rpg (cept the very last).

snes - I have to recommend Lufia2, Breath of Fire2, ChronoTrigger (yeah, bet everyone's played that), and... oh wait, you don't get emotion from 7th saga... oh well...

Ps1 and up - Valkyrie Profile (best on my list), Growlanser (playing it now), Arc the Lad 3... Well, Arc the lad is a little melodramatic. But I did get attached to the charries more than other games. Legend of Mana (kiddish fun). And others I'll throw in later.

As for a game that isn't an rpg that I just never got sick of... Intelligence Qube for PS1.. Yeah. Entertains me for hours. Very fun.

Edit - Oh, almost forgot Way of the Samurai 1 and 2.. Both are different but the same fun. Both are worth it. And both you can beat over and over again, but never get sick of.

I'd go into some long and drawn in explination and review for each.. But then I'd dominate your post lengths 10 times over and neither of us want that.. Ya know..

 You have no idea how long I have looked for someone like you. Finally, someone that understands! Someone that shares the same passions. Oh, I have so many suggestions! Where to begin... I guess I'll start at the beginning of my mature gaming experiance (I was foolish as a child).

The SNES:
Pretty much, you're lookin' at RPGs. FF4-6 were good (favorite was 5), Chronotrigger, Secret of Mana, Harvest Moon, Super Mario RPG (top ten favorite games list), Zelda: A Link to the Past (classic game, best of the series, if you ask me)

A few games that aren't RPGs. Tetris Attack if you want a puzzle game. It's not like traditional tetris, think more, the original diamond mine, only incredably fun. Plus it has an awesome puzzle mode that I still have yet to finish. Any of the Kirby's Dream Land games. Pretty much standard side scroller, but fun to play...and cheap to get if you can find it...usually... Mario Cart, and F-Zero are great racing games for the snes.

The N64
Smash Brothers (classic), Mischiff Makers (Side scroller with amazing game play. Two thumbs up!).

Saga Saturn
OH GOD, NO!!!

Playstation
Star Ocean: The Second Story (Played this game for two years of my life...I am not obsessed...you are!), Einhander (side scrolling shooter. Incredably rare, but oh so sweet. Top ten games list), Ehrgeiz (a hilarious, FFVII fanservice, 3-D fighting game. Has an oldschool text based 3-D rpg, too...don't ask), Parasite Eve (don't bother with the second. Top ten games list.), Final Fantasy Tactics (First and best, in my opinion, tactics game out there), Metal Gear Solid (better than the second, can't say about the third), Tenchu and Tenchu 2 (Stealthy ninja action. Tenchu 2 is on my tep ten games list)

The Dreamcast
Soul Caliber (everyone loves Siegfried), Virtua Fighter 2, Dead or Alive 2 (Hot ninjas dukin' it out), Jet Grind Radio (It's got a cult following, that means you know it's good!)

PS2 (abridged version)
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (same stealthy ninja action, a lot more Hawt!!1), Shadow Hearts: Covanant (Amazing game. One of the few that has made me cry...I love it so much...Top ten games list), Devil May Cry (one of the smoothest action games out there), Suikoden III (Only game that I know of that can be completely controlled with one hand, movement included), Guilty Gear Isuka (One of the best 2-D fighters out there)

Game Cube
Super Smash Brothers Melee (C'mon. Top ten games list), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Dark and Scary), Mario Cart: Double Dash (It's Mario Cart x2!)

XBox (abridged version)
Fable (sure it didn't live up to what they said it would do, it was still fun to play), Crimson Skies, Halo and Halo 2 (just remember that they are different games and they are allowed to be different from each other), KOTOR II (also known as Knight of the Old Republic 2), Jet Set Radio Future (Sequal, awesome game, incredably fun), DOA 3 (Hawt ninjas and a solid fighting game, what's not to like?).

PC (abridged version)
You already have Half-life 2 and CS: Source, this I know.

Invest in Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (Top ten games list). Also, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Look into Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion when it come out...in 2006...*sob*. I'll assume you have Starcraft and Warcraft III. Look into Dawn of War. It's an amazing RTS. Single player is a bit lacking, but online is the shit. Stronghold is an old game (you can get it from best buy for about $10). It's an RTS about laying seige to castles. Great fun for all. The Total War games (Rome: Total War, Shogun: Total War, etc.) are really great if you want accuracy in what battles are really like.

As a side note, the History Channel uses Rome: Total War to show what happened during historical wars. It's that good!

And I'll end on the Thief games (Thief, Thief 2: The Metal Age, and Thief: Deadly Shadows) Incredable stealth games that put MGS3 to shame.

I hope that's enough to get you started. I have more, but I'm tired and can't remember good right now. Brain needs sleep. Brain better shut up...
