Has anyone read this great book and / or seen this great movie? I have, and I wonder if anyone else likes it as much as I do. What is Battle Royale, you ask? Well.....its a nice little movie from Japan (instantly, right there, you know its awesome automatically), telling the story about a corrupt futuristic Asian government who ships groups of children off onto a remote jungle island to have them engage in a violent bloodsport.; Why the government does this? Easy. Population control, entertainment for the masses, and simple moral enforcement, a way to show the new youth of society that they better be good.....or its off to the island for them!
Battle Royale is a wonderfully written book and a damn good movie. Warning to the weak of heart though, they are both very, very violent. The amount of gore and violence in the movie is enough that the US wont officially license it for US distro. To watch this movie, I'd suggest downloading it off of a Torrent site somewhere or a DC++ hub. Its well worth it!
The main thing I like about the movie though, is it is a bit of a counter to Lord Of The Flies. Where the students are forced into violence by the adults of the world, who actually encourage and want them to commit the ruthless bloodshed. Over all, some resist the whole idea, while others get in touch with thier inner pyscho killers and go all out. There are many plot twists, tons of tragedies, and almost each character finds some way to connect with the audience. Maybe not so much in the movie, but in the book I felt as if each character that came up was a real character to me; and watching them die held a powerful significance.
I give this movie a high recommendation to anyone, its a nice gore fest with intellectual stimulation and wonderful plot. All around awesome.
