Title: Best games in history.

DarkVulpine - March 15, 2005 02:14 AM (GMT)
In your opinion, and in no particular order, what are the five best games for any system EVER made?

Mine:

Final Fantasy VI (3) [Super NES] YEAH Magitech!

Xeno Gears [PS 1] NOT to be confused with any of the XenoSaga games

Secret of Mana [Super NES] I seriously cried at the end. Seriously.

Disgaea [PS 2] The only game Ive put anywhere close to, let alone, 300+ hours into.

Final Fantasy VII [PS 1] Honistly, does this one even need an explination?

Cornfed - March 15, 2005 08:47 PM (GMT)
Haven't played Xeno Gears. It's impossible to find a copy. I don't count Ebay. It's run by the devil, and the devil lies.

I should play Secret of Mana. But I first have to beat a bunch of other games.

But I wonder, what about Parasite Eve? or Valkyrie Profile? or Einhander? Well, I can understand Einhander. It has a cult following that's at the level under underground. The game was puched under by FFVII and was only in production for a few months.

But Valkyrie Profile and Parasite Eve? Granted, Parasite Eve lacks a good plot. It's pretty cheesy. But I love the gameplay. The combat system is simple, yet very intense. A good mix between an action game and an rpg.

Valkyrie Profile, well, that's just a great game all around. Story is very true to certain versions of Norse mythology, and I love the way the dungeons work.

The combat system in it is probably my favorite combat system I've ever experienced. The way you can combo your characters' hits then combo they're finishing moves. Hitting them in the air gets you bonuses that speed up the rate at which you can use your super attacks or give you extra expirience. Characters having different moves that move the enemy in different directions. The combat system is simple, and can be learned quickly, but to master it, it takes time and skill. I love this game more than you can possibly imagine.

Truth be told, I have never played Einhander or Valkyrie Profile. Ive never even SEEN a copy of Einhander, and aside from a Parasite Eve II easter egg, never even heard of it until now. Ive never really gotten the urge to play VP because for some reason I associate it with Legend of Dragoon, which is a game that actually caused me physical pain to play. Just.... no. I know I should give VP a chance, but I dunno, my brain has made the association, and I cant get it out. I HAVE played Parasite Eve I & II, and infact own both of them. Dont get me wrong, both are great games, but they didnt really strike me as one of THE games I've played. Personally, I didnt care too much for the battle system of PE I, but I did kinda like the storyline, music, characters, and gameplay. In almost all ways I prefered PE II, particularly the battle system, which I think is one of the best Ive played for an action game. The thing that really kept it from my top 5 is how they have you running back and fourth all the time. I didnt mind it enough to think much less of the game, but it did get kind of tedious. The bosses however were amazing, and the game kept me on the edge of my seat almost all the time; that is to say, when I wasnt running through the same coridoor for the 16th time. Also, I dont care what anyone else says, that game had suspence! To this day, the sound that those horses make makes my heart beat faster. Oh, and in case anyone doesnt know what I was talking about for the Einhander easter egg in PE II, in the town area, inside the bar, at the very far end is a pinball machine. Check it out; its Einhander. Aya makes a comment about the game as well.

oO VP is NOTHING like Dragoon. Grah, i should beat you for typing that, Vulp. But about about this. After I get the good ending in teh game I'll let you borrow it with the strat guide. But you gotta be gentle with teh game cause, well, it took me forever to find.

ValkProfile is one of my fav games.

I've participated in these types of discussions before, and I'll have to say the game that I've always said as the best game ever made. Hands down, no contest (for me at least), it is a little cult-classic RPG for the SNES called Earthbound. Coupled along with that, I'd have to say Mischeif Makers is a game that often gets overlooked in the side-scroller category. Not enough people play that great game, anyway.....

The original Secrect Of Monkey Island game is also one of my all time favorites, as its a game that simply bleeds with awesome humor and wit. As far as First Person Shooters, its obvious that Half-Life 1 and 2 dominate this.....

But really, if I had to simply pick 3 of the "very best", I'd have to go with.....

Earthbound....

Lunar: Silver Star Story.....

....and maybe Final Fantasy 6? I need to think about it more, probably.

truth honestly, I've played so many games its hard for me to really pick the best ones.

Cornfed - March 29, 2005 04:12 AM (GMT)
Mischeif Makers! Man, if Dran reads your post, you'll be his new best friend.

Ah, Earthbound. I have it, and I have Earthbound 2. Never played either of them for more than 15 minutes, though. I can't say I like old school rpgs very much. Used to, then I played Morrowind.

Ah, Morrowind. Such a wonderful game. It's hard for any rpg to stand up to that kind of rpg, though. Open ended rpgs are probably my favorite kind of games ever. Remebering my love for them, I'd have to change my favorite games a little. I would say that despite all it's crashing, Morrowind is one of my top 3 favorite games. Though, if I can ever get a new monitor, Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines might push it out of the top 3.

But, I guess for my all time, #1, favoritest game in the whole wide world ever, I would have be Tetris. I love Tetris. Even now, I could go to the arcade and spend hours moving the little L and S blocks around for hours. I failed my math class because I had tetris on my calculator. I've gotten yelled at at work because I play tetris on the company phone. Tetris has always been a favorite of mine, and I can't see it ever not being.

Final Fantasy VI/3: I freaking love the game and, for a turn-based battle system, it's pretty intuitive and tries to make you think about what you'll do next in boss battles as well as come up with strategies for the different enemy groupings.

Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete: I'm going to tell you one of the most embarassing moments of my entire life. I'd just beaten the hell out of the game after a month or so of casual play and then I decided that I wanted all the bromides. Then I decided I'd also get all the secret weapons, etc. And then I decided to buy blank vhs tapes (you know where this is going). Because my ps1 was hooked up via VCR I recorded my gameplay throughout the entire game from start to finish, finding every secret in every little nook and cranny of the entire game. I eventually filled seven and a half VHS tapes which still lie strewn about my hous and room. I love that game, if you hadn't noticed already.

Final Fantasy VII: I came this close to crying | | when Aeris died.

007: Goldeneye: I despized the N-64 and its analogness, but I loved that freaking game. One of the best party-games ever and the maker/breaker of friendships everywhere at the time as controllers went flying, chips were spilled, yelling/fist matches were had, and everyone had fun figuring out newer and better ways to manipulate and kill everyone else. A damn good game and one which will probably be lost to history fairly soon. I think if they made a DS version with wifi; more than a few people would buy it ;)

There are countless others, but in the midst of my essay-driven sleepiness I'm afraid I can't think of many others; but I know there are many other games that I enjoyed throughout my life, not the least of which most certainly includes such games as Earthbound, Shining Force II, and Flashback (SEGA freakin' CD!)

DarkVulpine - April 27, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Ha ha! You nearly cried when Aeris died?! Heh. I think we all did. I know I got more than a little choaked up. Also, when Gau gets all dressed up for his father, and his father refuses to accept him in FF 6, yeah. I got misty.

Dran - April 27, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
Mischeif Makers is by far the best game that has ever existed! Haha, I normally don't replay games much, but I must have beaten that one at least 10 times all the way through, its gotta have my favorite boss music of any game. I still yell "through fire, justice is served" when I throw burning wads of flash paper at people. Valkerie profile also kicks much ass, though its nigh impossible to beat the "cool" way without pretty much doing everything the game tells you not to, giving up the best character, and coming very close to losing the game in one chapter.
I'm also a huge fan of the Dragon Warrior Series, partciularly number 4. I had a save file at the begining of chapter three where I could just go to work as that merchant guy over and over again for hours, and another devoted simply to the casino. I also absoluly love the Oddword, and most of the Sonic series.
If I had to list the best and second best games from some genres, it would be as follows.
FPS: Oddworld Strangers Wrath, Half Life 2
RPG:Valkerie Profile, Dragon Warrior 4
Side Scroller: Mischeif Makers, (Any of the early Sonic games), possibly Contra
Stealth/tactical: MGS3, that one game I can't remember
Overhead space shooter :Ikaruga, Lifeforce
Puzzle: Oddworld Abes Oddesy (freaking hard), Metroid (does this count as puzzle? Oh well, I love Samus)
EDIT: Oh oh, ShadowHearts2 is also a must play.

omfg I forgot one of my favorite strategy games of all time; the original MoO!!

Master of Orion was/is one of the best turn-based strategy games I've ever played, the 2nd was a little more cluttered and the third was a bureaucratic mess, but the first gave me hours and hours of fun. mmmm... impossible difficulty, 5 computers, huge galaxy, and me as Alkari, Mrrshaan, or Psilon. You have no idea how big the grin on my face got when I sent over twenty-thousand fighters (if you've played you know how hard that is to build up) equiped with plasma cannons galavanting through my enemies planets, destroying their fleets and destroying their planets one by one... until there is nothing left but their homeworld... which I then blockade until I take Orion and become supreme master of all the galaxy *evil laughter* Anyway, if you haven't tried it, it's old abandonware by microprose and you can play it with a doss emulator; the "copy protection" is just something that comes on the screen that asks you match up a ship name with a ship's picture; I have a printout that I use for easy reference (if you fail your empire fails and you lose) also, for a dos game, this thing is addictive... it uses a mouse and has low resolution but man; you have to try it to believe how addictive it can get once you get your tech up. Personally I name every planet after an anime character and every ship after my favorite books :D

It used to be hard to find but its actually quite easy to find a copy of Xenogears now. I think it's being reprinted ors omething. Either way, alot of the gamestores I go to and every Fred Meyers I see has a few unopened copies on their shelves. :)

Well lets see. In my opion i like alot of games but i havent played as much these days some the games im going mention are old but i still love them.

well The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time is one of my first favorites along with Star fox 64 , Metriod Prime , Dark Alliance , Forsaken 64 , and those ar my old favorites. A newer one i like is tales of symponia and Final fantasy . mostly i like games that are on the computer more than viedo games themselves. for computer games i like mainly those kinds where you kill lots of creatures or aliens.

Spirit of Vengeance - May 25, 2005 03:54 AM (GMT)
Aw jeeze, I got so many that I don't know where to begin. But here are some that come to mind

Goldeneye 007 (N64)-This was the reason why I got an N64.
Final Fight (Arcade)-The original beat 'em up. I still think that it kicks the crap out of Streets of Rage.
Dead to Rights (PS2)-OK, the graphics sucked, but still a hell of a game to play through
Hitman: Codename 47 (PC)-Great game. Still play it from time to time
Diablo 2 (PC)-I was addicted to this game for so many hours

lilgumba - June 13, 2005 05:35 AM (GMT)
Okay I would second Tetris and add a Mario Bros. You know back in the day those games were the bomb. I think it is also worthy to give much love to Pong. I just recently played the old version and to this day I can still get hooked on it. As far as newer games go Final Fantasy 7 was great. It was the game that got me back into gaming and opened up the RPG genera to me. Finally I will have to take off my hat for the Dance Dance Revolution series. That game gets you so involved in the game where hours of your life and lots of quaters can slip away without you even noticing. It feels so good to AAA something. Besides, I haven't played any really interactive game like that since the NES World Class Track Meet game that came with Mario and Duck Hunt. (Go power pad!)

Hmm. Best PC games.. Oh jeez..

Half-Life is one of the best FPS's, hands down, seconded IMO by System Shock 2. SS2 has some of the best storytelling ever made in ANY FPS, though.

Fallout 1 & 2 are my personal favorite PC RPG's but.. well, any Black Isle game will be good. PlaneScape: Torment? Best D&D-style RPG gameplay. Fallout is good GURPS-style futuristic setting. Arcana is a nice steampunk style game. Baldurs Gate series is better technically than PS:T, but I rate them at similar levels of accuracy to D&D and playablity.

Simulation games? SimCity 2000 is far and above the best of the SimCity series, given the accuracy of the economic system (which allowed taxing certain market segments, which was removed in SC3K and SC4) Well, almost all the OLD Maxis games, before the EA buyout were really good.

The 90's era PC is rife with platform games, my personal favorite was the
Commander Keen series, but Epic's Jazz Jackrabbit was a close second (and faster and more console-like)

so yeah. I could probably go into even more detail, but this post is already long.
