Title: Good first Manga to Get Into
KrazyKelli - August 2, 2005 05:47 AM (GMT)
You read the title.. What's a good handle of manga that are pretty awesome to start out with?
See, i'm not the reading type. But if people are telling me that they're all getting into Manga and how great it is, I might as well give it a try. And steal something. But what should I steal is the real question... I don't wanna end up with something that's boring and is hard to read.
So feel free to give me a load of titles that would be good starters or pull me into manga. Any genre is fine (fact, list a good starter for all genres if you want).

The first manga series I started reading was Ranma 1/2. It was easy to get into the story, and drew me in fairly quickly. The story is cute, and very light hearted.
If you wanna go for a darker sort of comedy, try Sorcerer Hunters. A little perverted, lots of magic, and lots of laughs. I found myself laughing at inappropriate times while reading that series at school and such. :X
Let's see... what else?
If you want action, I'd go for the Naruto manga. Lots of cool fights, and even if you've been keeping up with the anime, there's ALOT more to the manga, and it's alot further ahead of the anime.
Now, if you're looking for something more serious, you've stepped into my playing field. I love series that poke at my mind and go "Hey, think about that, huh?" A nice story, with some deeply laid plot, character development, and lots of sin. Two words - Angel Sanctuary. The story is very deep, and although the characters are simply dripping with sin, you still manage to sympathise with them and put yourself in their shoes.
Another series I'd suggest in that genre would be X/1999... same concept, and an amazing story.
They're both kinda hard to follow at first, and you really need to think about what's going on to get things to click. But once they do, you find yourself unable to put them down. I know I did.
Those are some good manga to start with I guess. It really depends on what YOU want to read. Find a genre you like, and go for that. Just go into a bookstore that sells a decent selection of manga, and just read the backs of all the books until you see something that catches your interest.

I was also going to say Ranma 1/2. I finaly read it recently after years of putting it off. There is alot of stuff that isen't in the anime and visa versa. Thought I didn't see the entire anime series. Never seen the last half of series 7 or any of 8. Anyways...
II douwnloaded a chapter of FMA manga and there was some characters that arn't in the anime at all. So Try getting FMA, I think you will like it, I'm looking for it too.
And Rurouni Kenshin after the Kyoto Arc, really, really good.

I'm into Romantic Comedies... just because Anime tends to flow with Murphy's Law; Everything that can go wrong, will, but still has a happy ending anyway.
My two favorite Mangas right now are "Vampire Game" and "Fruits Basket"
Vampire Game - Nothing like a princess who's a bitch because she doesn't want to be a princess, and all her relatives are trying to either marry her or kill her.. or both, and she ends up getting a vampire as a pet (I won't explain), who's bent on destroying the family, and the princess decides to help.
Fruits Basket - Same premise as the anime, but way better! More comedy, more romance, All the animals!
There's a new manga title out (only the 1st book is out that I know of) called "Bizenghast" It's a horror/goth title. It's very dark, mildly creepy, a couple jokes (not enough to kill the mood), and good.
Bizenghast - Newly orphaned girl who can see ghosts accidentally signs a contract to put a certain number of souls to rest, or die a horrid death. She and her boyfriend then enter the worlds of the dead to figure out how to put the souls to rest..
I have 16 other manga titles if you care to know what I have and my opinon on said titles, IM or PM me.

I really enjoy reading manga; often I find that anime series are too short and I want to learn more about my favorite characters.
For romantic comedies, a couple of my favorites are Fruits Basket (of course!) and Ai Yori Aoshi (even if Aoi is a bit of a whiner, Tina's the best!)
As for action series, to that I've really enjoyed are Real Bout High School (incredible fighting) and Geobreeders (some amazing action sequences).

Thought I'd bump this thread.
I'm almost done reading Vampire Game and I'd like more suggestions on good mangas to read. I'll be renting the manga from the library, so hopefully what you suggest will be there (they have a decent selection and I can have them mail some manga from other Michigan locations)
