Title: The Whispering Shade
Description: The Inn

Chibi Chichiri - October 11, 2005 05:14 AM (GMT)
The lobby is a square room, arranged with a large desk directly in front of the door, about 10 feet from the entrance. The desk is chest height on most people, leaving the area behind easily higher than anyone entering. There's a handful of pen-holders arrayed along the surface of the desk, and one small hand-bell. The sign in front of the bell says "Please ring once for service." There are several doors coming off the room. One leads to a short-order kitchen, one behind the front desk, and an dumb-waiter to the direct left of the lobby desk.

To the right wall, where the kitchen door is, a dining area with only a single, long bar sits. Six stools sit right next to the bar. Signs pinned to the wall behind list the dishes they serve and times, with several specials surrounded with simple starbursts.

There's a staircase that leads up the stairs, to the inn's rooms. There's a short hallway that leads the length of the building, front to back, and is lined with 10 doors exactly. Each has a keyed lock, the u-shaped doorknobs curving out from the front of the card receptacle. The doors are white, with a number on the front. At the end of the hallway, the dumb-waiter door sits at chest-height.

Alyssia walked into the inn with a sigh. She looked behind the desk and sighed again when she saw no one there, but then noticed the bell and sign. Aly rang the bell a couple times and waited for a moment, then smiled as the owner walked out. "I need a room!"

The owner nodded. "That'll be 75 gil."

Aly dug through a pocket and pulled out the required amount of money, setting it on the counter. The owner counted it, then pulled out a key and handed it to the Turk. "You have room 4." She nodded and pocketed the key, then walked up the stairs and to her room. After fiddling with the lock for a bit, she finally managed to get the door open and walked inside, closing her door behind her. 'That was a lot of excitement for one day. Sheesh...' She carefully laid down on the bed and sighed. 'All of that and I still haven't gotten anywhere on my first mission... And they have to throw a second one on me too.' Aly shook her head, lightly hitting the bed with her fist. "I really don't get paid enough for this... I'll have to call up there and see if I can get a raise."

Zane was still smirking softly at the final mumbled statement Kiwi made.
Me neither.. though Alyssa's alright.. He chuckled and took a seat at one of the few tables. The food making hours were already long past, but the kitchen people didn't mind reheating something for a modest price.

So that's basically how Kiwi and Zane entered the place. Zane took a seat at a table and the working people there, knowing him as a repeat customer, didn't complain too much about it.

Kiwi, on the other hand, tagged close to Zane and sat at the table all cautiously. After all, the last time he was at an inn it was full of sleezy guys and thugs. The kid doesn't want some repeat performance. Once sitting by the table, he folded his arms on it and sunk his head into them. Tummy growling like a rabid Bandersnatch in hunting season. His green highlit hair the only thing seen over his arms.

And during all this he subconsciously wondered if a buncha evil turks would raid the place and take him away. Scary thought.

...."food?"

LightCecil - November 9, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
Zane sat up again. There was no such thing as a wait staff, and in fact, most of the people that would've been there had already cleared out quite some time ago. He'd have to call them out. They often weren't happy about that. Some of the other nights he had been here there had been some noisy fights over the quality of leftovers or the time of night they were calling food. But a few staff aspiring to earn some extra gil would always be there.

He approached a window where there was just one, quite tired looking guy in street clothes. Typical. Zane didn't care either way though. "Uh.. hey do you have anything prepared still?"

The guy blinked, clearly half-asleep. It wasn't that late, jeez.
"Huh.. oh." He rubs his eyes. "Yah.. coupla burgers. I ain't makin' no more, so take it or leave it."

Zane nodded. His hunger was geting quite fierce. "Sure."

The guy surveyed Zane, perhaps getting a good idea of what he could charge without getting yelled at. "Uhm.. that'll be uh 40 gill."

Zane grumbled a little. 40 gil was really stretching it for leftovers.
"38 gil." Zane proposed.

The guy grumbled a little, but nodded. "Okay.. thas' as low as I'm goin' though.."
Zane nodded and produced some of his coins and deposited them on the counter. The guy went back for a short while, and produced a pair of clearly reheated hamburgers. Good enough. He took it and watched as the guy pushed through the doors past him to the manager. He said something and then walked up the stairs to the second floor where the rooms were.

Zane took a seat and set the plate in front of the hungry little kid, taking his own. This'd have to do.

KrazyKelli - November 9, 2005 10:06 PM (GMT)
When the handburg.... er.. hamburger was placed infront of Kiwi on the table, he raised his head to greet it. Pupils dilate like a cat on the hunt.. And, raising hand, Kiwi strikes!

Then inspects the burger suspiciously for a second... Satisfied, he eats it. Fast. Way too fast for a kid. So fast that he starts to choke on it before too long. Blue in the face for a moment... Struggling! Ah, he managed to swallow it, so it wasn't that bad. But he wasn't done! Kiwi finished the hamburger quickly afterwards.

All that finished, the kid looked around for more food.. "More?" before getting a cramp and hugging his tummy.. "no... Nevermind..."

LightCecil - November 9, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
Zane eyed the kid choking the food down. He could only shake his head, first making sure that Kiwi wasn't genuinely choking before continuing to eat his own helping.

He sets his burger down for a moment and says, "I know you're probably hungry, but you ought to be more careful. After all. I'm terrible at first aid, and the only other option,-" he paused and considered, before cruelly adding "-would be to call one of those clinic nurses to drag you back." He chuckles with a little but of mischeviousness before finshing his burger at a safer pace.

KrazyKelli - November 17, 2005 03:18 AM (GMT)
Kiwi blinked, his cheeks still squirrel-stuffed full of hamburger that he hasn't yet swallowed. But clearly the threat about going back to the clinic got him into finding some water quick. FInally getting it all down, the kid broke out with a panicked, "Anything but that!" Before looked around for any clinic workers that just could've happened to be there.

Alas, seeing no people in white outfits with rubber gloves and needles standing around, Kiwi calms down. Then looked at the ground. Soon after becoming bumed out. "I hope that cool guy will be ok."

LightCecil - November 18, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
Zane hmms, looking up from the last of his burger.
He scratches his head. "Which cool guy?" He asks, thinking over what the kid had said before. Before the kid has time to answer, he says "OH. RIght. Ravik. I think?"

He was wonder too, what became of the guy. He all but vanished after he got out of the clinic.

Lewis Daggart - November 24, 2005 05:34 AM (GMT)
Candy stepped out of room 6 and stretched. He had no idea what time it was, only that he'd slept late. He hadn't been the one drinking of course. That was reserved for the 'high class' business men that were certain they'd recieve a good deal from the slummers no matter how much liquor they chugged down their throats. And Candy liked it better that way. That way, they both got a bargin.

No, he hadn't been drinking. But he had stayed up all night talking with the man, making a sell. And he'd managed to get the money that same night, so the businessman couldn't sober up and demand a lower price later.

And now Candy left his room, flush with gil, and headed down stairs with a broad smile on his face. It was always a pleasure doing business with a man of the Plate.

KrazyKelli - November 24, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
"No no no!" Kiwi protested, getting a bit aggrivated. "The cool guy that saved me. That's still In the clinic. Ya know, the poisoned cool guy!"

And just then, the Wutaiian kid started to get really anxious. Like his ADhD was setting in and he felt like he'd been sitting there too long with enemies of the shinra! Yeah. Til he found his Daddy or friends that left off to this place 2 years ago, Kiwi couldn't trust everyone. He peered slightly at Zane. Could he trust Zane?

Just then, a really happy guy came down the stairs after making a sale. It surprised the kid so much that he nearly fell out of his chair when jumping... To turn around and see the guy (of course).

Quick check of the kid. Little for a kid his age. black pants, ankle-high boots, a poorly sewn, partially bloody Midgar shirt. Clearly this kid's either killed something recently or came out of some real tight places with assistance of a chainsaw. Currently he's sitting next to Zane the TreasureHunter at a table. The room smelled of microwaved burgers.

Eventually, after seeing the big scary beaming smile of the new, happy, yet remotely cool guy, Kiwi fell out of his chair with a crash. "Ite..."

Lewis Daggart - November 24, 2005 06:44 AM (GMT)
Candy stepped backwards, looking at the downed kid in confusion.

"Er, are you alright?"

He glanced around slightly nervously, thinking I didn't do it, I didn't do it.

He offered a hand to the boy.

He's looking a bit, uh, bloody. except I don't think it's his blood. Let's not think about that.

KrazyKelli - November 24, 2005 06:53 AM (GMT)
Oh, the anxiety, tension, surprise, and overall fear of everyone finally hit Kiwi. Completely forgetting about Zane (he even forgot about paying him back for the food), Kiwi gets up. Brushes himself off. And finds himself just staring with pure Deer Fear at the guy. Not knowing what to do. Obviously scared or embaressed about something.

Who was this guy? What did he want? Was this the owner of the inn? Was he gunna come make him work there like that other big-nosed, scary guy in Sector 2?!

Then, finally, he looses it when he realizes that he's been caught! Or, well, whichever imaginative thing runs through his mind. This new guy was cool looking. But it was seriously clear that he Had to have something to do with the Shinra.

"Never!" Spilled the young wutaiian, seeing that his only way to the door outside was blocked by this new guy with the big creepy smile. Before too long he closes his eyes tight and runs right into Candy, around, and out.

Unbeknowns to Kiwi is that on his way out he somehow got hold of a wallet/pouch/purse of gil. But that doesnt' stop him. He runs off pretty fast before he even knows this fact.

Lewis Daggart - November 24, 2005 07:00 AM (GMT)
Candy was slammed back as the kid hit him.

"Uh, you're never...alright?"

He stared bemusedly at the receeding child.

"Well, that's gotta suck."

Candy vaguely consitered going after him, but there wasn't any reason to. The boy obviously had something on his mind, and that something wanted to be very far away from him. Whatever floats your boat. He shrugged and started walking to the door, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

He stopped and pulled his hands back out.

Then put them back in.

He repeated this a couple more times, testing a hypothosis.

"Well, damn."

LightCecil - November 24, 2005 07:38 AM (GMT)
Zane rubs the back of his head softly, watching the kid not only snitch the cash, but run like a madman out of the inn. He can only shake his head.

"Uhm.. Sorry about that. He's not mine." He sighed, hoping he wouldn't have to make ANOTHER break for it for the kid. Whatever the guy was so happy about, it looked like would turn into grief in a moment. This kid was definitely turning into a liability.

Lewis Daggart - November 24, 2005 07:46 AM (GMT)
"My gil... my gil's gone.."

He looked like he was in a daze and after a moment, collapsed onto a stool.

"S'all gone. My gil's gone."

He looked at the man who'd just spoken to him and gave a long drawn out sigh.

"He took it, you see. Took my gil. And it's gone now. It's taken."

He slouched a little bit more.

"Gone."

Candy sighed again.

"Those Plate guys don't like the risk of being seen with me. And now that he's got what he needs it'll be atleast a year before I get an opportunity like this again. This run was supposed to leave me flush for months."

He was about to call for some service, before realizing that he couldn't because his gil was gone. How had that slipped his mind?

LightCecil - November 24, 2005 07:56 AM (GMT)
Zane watched the other guy mutter to himself about gil. Damn.. I can't just let this guy get ripped off like that. Zane needed to learn to not take up every charity case that came his way, but this wasn't something he could let go.

"Y'know.. that kid's got some people after him.. He doesn't have anywhere to run but up or out of the city.. It can't be that hard to catch him if he can't go through sector 02."

Slowly, Zane was cooking up a plan, or at least a rudimentary idea. He settles into his chair and thinks for a bit, hand on one of his temples.

Lewis Daggart - November 24, 2005 08:06 AM (GMT)
Candy thought for a moment, his mind swimming.

"No, no.. he's probably already counted it. That means he's already gone or the money's spent. Either way, the athorities won't do anything, and I don't much like beating on children."

He sighed again, but his head was clearer. "It just... Wow, that was alot of work recycling that stuff. They would have taken it at half purity I'm sure. Certainly willing to cut corners. But I take a pride in my work, even if they don't."

He ran some figures in his head cursed to himself.

"Damn, there's not enough time for me to gather the materials and make stock. There's only so much one man can do by himself. No, I'll have to sell the scrap raw to a smith for one tenth the price, and maybe see if I can get a crew together on credit. Do a sweep of the wall. Oh!"

He turned quickly and looked at the man.

"Sorry, I was rambling. I'm Candy."

Chibi Chichiri - November 27, 2005 07:37 AM (GMT)
After having a nice, happy nap, which made her side feel oh-so-much better, Alyssia got up out of bed. She took a glance over towards the window, then mentally slapped herself. 'Man... I need to remember you can't tell what time of day it is by looking out the window down here. All you see is the plate and the plate is not the sun.'

Aly stood up and stretched, grabbing her sunglasses off the nightstand and sticking them back in their normal place of on top of her head. She didn't really understand why she kept the things around. It was never sunny in Midgar, especially under the plate, and she had only left the city once since she first arrived five years ago. 'Damnit... I wanna go home one of these days... Either that or annoy the hell out of my brothers, wherever the hell they are.'

Aly sighed quietly and sat back down on the bed. A minor bout of homesickness had set in. She hadn't seen her parents since she left Junon, and it was kinda rare for her to run into anyone from home she knew, especially her older brothers. They were constantly shipped off to who knows where and she wouldn't hear from them for months at a time.

The Turk shook her head to get the thoughts to go away. Now was not the time to worry about family stuff. She had a job to do. ...Actually, two jobs, she reminded herself. 'SOLDIER, fake rebels... Wait, what?! No, no, no! Rebels, fake SOLDIER... Rebels, fake SOLDIER...' Aly nodded to herself after making sure she had her information correct. She stood back up and opened the door to her room, walking out and slinging her machine gun over her shoulder. "Time to kick some ass!" She closed the door and hurried down the stairs to hand in the key.

LightCecil - December 8, 2005 06:11 PM (GMT)
Zane watches the man ramble. He shrugs, figuring if Candy had his own way, he'd let the man solve his own problem. It still didn't make him happy that he let Kiwi go.

It was at that point that Aly appeared at the foot of the stairs, holding her machine gun in an unmistakable stance. Since this was Sector 01, AKA Turkland, it didn't surprise him in the least. If he didn't know better, he would've thought it a good idea to stay out of her way.

Therefore, he made no effort, unlike his usual response, to find a nice, dark corner to hide in for a while. Since Candy had decided against Zane's initial idea, they really didn't need her help anyway.

Lewis Daggart - December 9, 2005 04:43 AM (GMT)
Candy continued looking at the man for a moment, waiting for a response. He blinked. Then shrugged and walked out the door.

A moment later he was back inside, rummaging through his pockets as he stood by the counter, as if looking for something. "Ah..hm." He propmpylu gave up whatever it was he had been trying to do and left once more, practically tripping on his feet.

Chibi Chichiri - December 16, 2005 06:16 PM (GMT)
After dropping her key off on the counter, Alyssia blinked slightly as a red-haired man walked up and started digging through his pockets. She blinked again as the man then suddenly turned and walked out, stumbling a bit. The Turk tilted her head to the side in a bit of confusion, a finger by the side of her mouth. She didn't have any clue what that was all about.

After a moment or two, Aly simply shrugged and looked around slightly. When she spotted Zane in the dining area, she grinned and waved at him, then turned and hurried out the door. Work called...not literally, but in the sense of she wanted it out of the way...and the young Turk had a lot of things to do, much of which she truly wasn't looking forward to.
