The second re-release of FF4 in the US has been reviewed by yours truly!
-Graphics
Battle backgrounds have been re-done and look really good. The new text needs a little adjustment but look good. The airship actually looks like a 3d-ish enviroment, with castles, and such standing up not being flat like on the SNES.
Other than that it's all the same as before.
-Sound
The music seems to have taken a hit for the GBA. It sounds the same, but its all a little different. You'll know it when you hear it. It's all remixed for the GBA's sound card. (the best way to describe it)
-Gameplay
It's all here. The stuff taken out on the US-SNES version is back. Most of it is useless if you ask me. (although Cecil's Dark ability was useful early in the game)
There are 2 new dungeons to the game, and they both involve a new endgame feature. The new endgame feature is that you can choose your endgame party for the final dungeon and beyond. One dungeon opens up on Mt.Ordeals after you get your party change unlocked. Inside are the characters' ultimate weapons.
The second dungeon opens up after you defeat the final boss. There are special cutscene rooms that are character specific depending on who is in your party (Kain has to solve a murder mystery). At the end is a boss whose identity is a hardcore FF4 trivia question (it was a fun fight).
-Overall
I enjoyed my trip down nostalgia lane. I wouldn't have picked this up if it wasn't for the new extras for this version. Personally I LOVED the new stuff they added in.
-List of new stuff not listed above-
-in game Bestiary
-unlockable sound test (for the music)
-quick save feature
-character headshots when talking
-New gear found in extra dungeons
Not to mention the Developer/Programmer room, and all that entails. :3
Agreed on the music. Sorta made me wince, and this is just thinking about the original SNES music, rather than the other Square arrangements.
Also: Did you notice the RealUltimatePower reference in Baron?
Edit: Cappie!
