Title: Anime not to live without
Description: your opionions
PHD - November 14, 2006 05:25 AM (GMT)
I'm bored, so I randomly came up with this topic. What anime can't you live without, and what anime can you live without?
One Not to live without I would say is "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" It rocks, and there's nothing else to say about it.
One I could definitely live without is "Final Fantasy Unlimited" They tried too hard without making it very interesting, and the character names of Ai and Yuu gets really annoying
So, what about you? What's an anime (series or movie) that you think is awesome, and what do you think is crap? The fact that my awesome and rotten are both Final Fantasy related is just coincidental btw.

Hrmmm... since I seem to prefer cute and uplifting anime, I'd say one series I really like is Fruits Basket.

Wow, how'd this thread get looked over for so long? XD
Slayers. Great, Great glop of anime series, ovas, and movies.
Card Captor Sakura. Cutest anime ever (excluding Hamtaro)
Any Ghibli movie ever made. I could continually watch ANY of them repeatedly and not get bored. I think my fav is Whisper of the Heart, but I also like many many others.

-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig.
Just so wonderful, nice animation for the most part, good cast of interesting characters (some of which we still find out very little about so far) and the Tachikoma (so cute, yet oh so deadly). And I prefer it over the (non SAC anyway) movie(s) actually. Decent dubbing from what little I could take (the Major is fine in either language, as is most of the cast), but what I heard of the English Tachikoma..ehhh...not so much, but I may just be too attatched to the Japanese VA for them.
-Kino's Journey.
There's just something about this series. Just watch it and you'll see. (Or not. n_n;;;; ) It's fairly short, so I'm trying not to say too much for the few who haven't seen it.
- The Slayers.
Great great series. I <3th Lina and most of the other characters too. More silly than serious for the most part, but it manages to do both pretty well when the situation calls for it. I think my favourite that I've seen is Slayers Next (I really need to see the original series though before I can say definitvely).
- Almost anything Kosuke Fujishima (You're Under Arrest, Oh! My Goddess, etc), Studio Ghibli (Mononoke Hime, Howl's Moving Castle (Calcifer is so cute), Kiki's Delivery Service, etc etc etc), or Yoshitoshi ABe related (Lain, Haibane Renmei, NieA_7, etc). Seriously it's hard to go wrong here. And, random sidenote, remind me to never ever consider a 'ship with someone who doesn't like Belldandy (WTF?).
- Azumanga Daioh
Silly, silly, slice of life series. It's not crazy silly generally at least in the vein of FLCL or Excel Saga (both of which I also have a fondness for), but it's so cute and fun. It's one of the few series that actually made me LOL. Nyamo and Yukari-sensei are adorable, as is little Chiyo-chan. And I just adore Sakaki (poor Kaorin) and her quest to pet the kitties.
- R.O.D (Read Or Die)
Fun OAV that was strangely addictive, I find myself still enjoying it after the second, third or fourth viewing. Geeky gal as main character, at first seeming a bit goofier and scatterbrained (and oh so nice n polite), who is actually quite deadly (with bits of paper no less). Think book obsessed slightly less silly (or destructive) Vash the Stampede. And joined by her soon partner on the mission, a buxom catsuit wearing woman who can phase through objects, kick and punch with the best of them and is never too far from a gun. The TV series mainly follows Sumiregawa Nenene and The Paper Sisters (Anita, Maggie and Michelle), but.. You-Know-Who eventually turns up (yay!).
- GTO
A pervy legendary ex-biker gang leader turned teacher with a heart of gold and some very unusual teaching methods. What's not to like?
- 2x2=Shinobuden (aka Ninja Nonsense (I think))
A young kunoichi in training named Shinobu and her gal pal (/potential love interest) Kaede, Shinobu's pervy sidekick(/mascot)/"Master" and the various amusing things that happen to and around them. Again, what's not to like?
- Kannazuki no Miko
Ok, ok, I know not the best shoujo-ai/yuri on the planet (subtext, canon or otherwise. Suggestions are welcome), it could have been better, yes. And I could do without some of the plot twists (such as they are..). But still, the end had me crying (then again, I might just have watched it at the right time for that). And if someone asks why not MariMite (as far as I know, mostly subtext), Strawberry Panic, Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl or another series, chances are I haven't seen all or any of it.
I'd list a shounen-ai/yaoi anime here, had I finished enough to say for certain (I've seen Fake and Loveless, some of Gravitation (need to finish), but yeah need to see more).
That should do for now. I would list anime I thought was crappy, but people might want to hurt me. XD

There's only 2 anime I cannot do without.
Bleach: Guy gets spiritual superpowers and becomes more powerful over time. It pulled me away from Naruto; I thought it was that good. Mind you, I thought Naruto was the coolest anime since they animated sliced bread. If Naruto was DBZ with ninjas and no yelling for half an episode, Bleach is DBZ with samurai spirits and no half an episode yelling.
Azumanga Daioh: Take Raguna's azumanga info and add a major love for Osaka (they nickname a character from Osaka, Osaka.)
I can do without Shin Chan and InuYasha.

Yay! Ragu agrees with me on hte slayers thing XD though I like subbed way more than dubbed.
Excluding Momiji's horridly whiney voice acting, Blueseed is another anime that's awesome and better dubbed than subbed. I dunno, something about how the only interesting voice in japanese is the english person's. The anime is about present day japan (and the world) getting attacked by viscious demonic plants. And it'll only take one girl getting killed to save everything or destroy everything.
I dunno about Bleach. I've only seen a few eps on CN dubbed and I never got into it. Is it better subbed or uncut or something?

Yes it's drastically better subbed and uncut, they didn't pull a one piece on it but subbed is still better. :P
I gotta say I love Tenchi Muyo a little too much. I was going to mention another one but already forgot what I was going to say because I responded to KK. :P

I'm kind of surprised no one said Hellsing. I thought it was an awesome anime, and one of the few that I'll watched dubbed instead of subbed. It just sounds weird for characters that are all British to be speaking Japanese with Japanese accents. The OAV is looking better than the original too, since they're basing it more off the manga, which was much more bloody.
Other series for me would of course be Slayers, because Lina is awesome, as well as Fruits Basket, although I really wish they'd redo it to match the manga, so there'd be a lot more episodes, because let's face it, 4 discs just wasn't enough Fruits Basket.

I could have lived without The Soul Taker. It had some decent parts but it was too much of a mind**** for me.
Kaleidostar i can't live without. I might not watch it all the time but when I do it's still kind of magical.
Maria-sama ga miteru is the best older sister - younger sister show I've seen so far. It might be slow but I like the main characters too much. I can't wait for season 4 to come out.

I just have to add Blood+ to this list, this show is just insanely good, IMO. :P
