Title: Rant about online gaming
Description: AKA, taking potshots at FFXI

Chibi Chichiri - November 19, 2003 05:42 AM (GMT)
Alright. Before I begin, I am posting a disclaimer. Not for my protection, but for the people who might have a fit's protection. I have never played FFXI, nor do I plan to. I don't care how good you say it is. This rant is my opinion. And the main reaason I am posting this is because I know many other people who agree with everything I say here. So if you wish to flame me, my only response will be STFU. I will not listen to you.

This is taken from my blog which can be found at here.

Anyways... I'm sure many of you out there know that Everquest 2... Sorry, I mean, FFXI, is out. And the most horrifying thing about it that it's... gasp! Online. To me, that completely ruins FFXI. Online RPGs, usually referred to as MMORPGs ((Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Games, for those of you living under rocks and what not.)), are the anti-thesis of what console RPGs are. And FFXI is ruined for me for many reasons, which happen to be quite common in MMORPGs and not supposed to occur in a console RPG series.

First and foremost, MMORPGs have no storyline at all. Well, Ok, they have something that tells you your purpose in the game, but not much else... My basic summary of what one does in an MMORPG is as follows: Run around, kill monsters, run around some more, visit some town to buy/sell stuff and heal, repeat until one of two things occur. Either you one, get your character to a god-like level and call it good, or two, you get so sick of it that you have to go out and kill yourself. Either way, there's no end to the game and usually one ends up quitting because they get tired of it. Console RPGs have an ending, therefore meaning you can beat the game and then toss it somewhere, allowing it to gather dust before breaking it out for another round. MMORPGs don't have that closure, which means you run around for days, not really knowing what you're supposed to do.

The next thing on my reasons I say FFXI is ruined is that many of the people you meet in MMORPGs can be complete and total assholes, which ends up ruining your gaming experience if you have to constantly deal with them... I play video games to get away from those kinds of people. Why would I play a game that would cause me to have to deal with them again, just under a disguise and funny name.

The final reason I wouldn't play FFXI is the fact it's pay-to-play. I'm sorry, but isn't it enough to go out and buy the game? I'm spending almost $50 to get the game itself, why do I have to spend $15-20 dollars more a month just to play? I just don't see it as worth it. Even if I had the money to buy the game and pay the online fee, I wouldn't do it, because I could easily get FFX-2, when it comes out, for the $50 dollars it costs me to buy FFXI and use the money spent on the online fee to buy another game every other month or so. That's also why I don't play Evercrack... I mean, Everquest. Most MMORPGs are a complete waste of money and if you forget to pay your fee that month, you're screwed until you do.

There. All done. Those of you who have suffered through reading this and want to complain, go right ahead. I will complain back. :P

wow, you really like to whine about FFXI, don't you? XD
Yeah, paying does suck, but if it's going to take up that much time and I can play with my friends who live far away, I think it's worth it.
btw, $13 a month, not $15-20.
Actually, one of the nice things on FFXI is that people aren't assholes, like I've heard other online games have. They're actually really nice. o_O People randomly curing you or casting protect on you.

Well, technically, I'm not just whining about FFXI. The game's just given me more of a reason to voice my complaints about online gaming in general.

erm, what CC-san said. i commend you, dood XD

i haven't been playing Final Fantasy for very long (yes, FFX was my first one), and i'm not really one to be spending much of my time clicking on my mouse, bashing monsters just to get to that "god-like" level 1000 and be all happy about it. but i get the feeling that Final Fantasy games consisted of great storylines that everyone can talk about at school the next day. but hey, square's still experimenting, and i'm sure they'll figure out what their fans usually want.....

I won't be playing the online ff...I don't have that kind of money. I understand your complaints. I don't care about its existance though as long as they don't neglect development on the console offline games.

I'd reply, but I'm to busy playing FFXI... (or I would be if I had the money ^^)

Ah well, my only problem with it is that just about everyone I know has it and I dont XD

*curse, rant, bitch*

Mwahaha! I summed up my rant, and can't be counter-ranted. }:D

Well, I'm getting it for the PS2...You all probably think I'm some rich bastard; I'm not. XD I'll just be saving up...and I started saving up 3-4 months ago, so I have 2-3 months left to get all that cash...

Reasons why I'd like to get it?
I've experienced some MMORPG gameplay, and I must say, I play it for the fun of being with friends who live far away and doing some RPG playing together. Sure, MMORPGs don't have stories...but you can create one if you're bored. XD Or just do some quests that hopefully the MMORPG you're playing provides. I p2p RO and it's been worthwhile, I enjoy being able to challenge myself against hard-to-kill monsters. I may even continue playing it even if I do get to God-mode and what not since I'd be able to help my friends who are on their way there. RO is only $12, $1 cheaper than FFXI, but once FFXI is out, I'm surely gonna drop RO. I won't be abandoning my friends on RO...cause I'll drag them with me to FFXI. *evil laugh* Ahem...anyway, I don't disagree with you CC, MMORPGs do have a lot of downsides; it's just that those downsides aren't much of a problem for me.

Also...probably the most simple reason I'm getting FFXI is...I'm a big FF fan. I have FF to FFX, and I'd also have FF Legends and FF: Crystal Chronicles if I had a GC/money to buy the games...

well i just have to say i used to play MMORPG but i ditched em.. to much money goes into em and its true that when you buy it you have to pay... though you get one month free of gaming... ive met people that cures you, heals you even gives you money when you needed it or items... but htne also hes right about thoes jerk people that goes around with a funny name... and completly whines about how he can beat us up and calls us crappy names.. but hey whats an administrator for.. lucky the MMORPG i played DaoC (short for Dark age of camelot) you can type Admin help (and the problem) an admin would appear in less then 1 minut and se whats the fuzz.... but MMORPG is expensive... so is Xbox live... whjy didnt i buy an ps2 when i had the money.. only reason 2 of my friends has xbox so now we gotta get a system link thing... and then we can play 12 people.... but hey thats just us he he... id rather buy a ps2 anytime now... anytime dont buy an xbox.... buy an ps2... ill buy one if i have enough money... and if i want one when i have the money after ive bought clothes and so on.. but mmorpg is fun to play with your friends but cost a lot of money.. and there is a storyline in the mmorpg just not one you can finish.... the only lame part of the game... you have a background but not an ending.... no mmorpg would end because that would shut down the whole game... and players that are max levels. in ym case lev 50 would complete the game in 0.5 sec while charaters that are lev 10 would just stuck killing monsters... but yes i see the point. but isnt every game if we go down to basics just kill something run around kill some thing more and so on and on...???
