Title: Top 5 Over-rated games

KrazyKelli - July 27, 2007 05:53 AM (GMT)
What are the top 5 over-rated games of all time? Ya know, games people make a big deal about constantly but don't deserve the credit. Back up with reasons.

I can only really think of 3 games right now.

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Granted it's good but it's just not that great. ES4, unlike ES3, I can never bring myself to play again even with cheats. The story is really good, but closing all the gate was a snore fest.

Gears of War
This! game! has! No! Story! Than and a really crappy multilayer. Though single player was fun, but not something I can play to often.

Halo Series
Again, this is a crappy FPS though it has a really good story and setting. through still it's multilayer really sucks and thats why most people say it's a good game.

I'd say Halo off the top of my head. Of course, Halo! It was only ever good because it came out in a gaming downtime.

I only played Oblivion twice. Didn't think it was too bad but maybe I wouldn't of stoped playing if I actually owned it.

Gears of War was cool. I think games with good multiplayer are invaluable. There were always so little good multiplayer games when I was a kid all we ever did were play the same ones over and over again. And Gears of War is a superbly made game so it's multiplayer reflects that. The only annoying thing about it is the rocket launcher doesn't do a whole lot of good and you're pretty screwed if someone gets the sniper rifle.

That must be why Halo took off so easily is the multiplayer. Except Halo's multiplayer system sucks hard. The graphics are too poor on the big maps to be able to do anything and some of the game mechanics are so stupid they make me refuse to play.

halflife 2: better graphics and stuff and some fantastic games using it's gaming engine (TF2, CS:S, etc) but the whole game just doesn't play with the confusion, desperation and claustrophobia I felt in fighting an alien menace in the original halflife. it took them forever to launch and even though it's been rated one of the best games ever made by a bunch of sites/magazines I think it's a good game... but it wasn't great.

Halo 2 and 3: I liked halo 1. the gameplay wasn't especially new to anyone but the story was pretty solid and a couple times it managed to even get my heart pumping a little bit. The other two well... they seem like they just wanted money. lots and lots of money. and sponsors. And as for halo 3 I've heard people talk about how much they like the graphics and well, anyone who's played bioshock will tell you that halo 3 isn't pushing the system in the least.

Final Fantasy 8: I ******ing hate this game. It starts with the premise of maybe having the story and just becomes well... kind of a non-game with a really shitty plot in my opinion.

Duke Nukem Forever: Do I even have to mention how much vaporware this game is? I mean after more than a decade, just cut your losses guys.

Red Steel: I'd hate to bash a wii game but red steel was essentially in beta when it launched. The main problem being that the physics/sword controls weren't done and the high-level graphics you saw in the premier videos were only ready for about a tenth of game and the company wanted the game out AT launch. And you know what that meant? Lowering the graphics to the baseline for the entire game, slapping together a highly-assisted (instead of highly accurate) sword system, attaching the unfinished physics engine and launch the game. I honestly don't blame the people who worked on it, I blame the higher ups who shoved it out the door.

The first thing that pops into my head, and I'm surprised no one has said it yet..

Final Fantasy XII. Yes, the graphics were nice, the videos were astounding (when you got to see them). I vaguely remember hearing promises of the characters meeting and joining for real reasons as opposed to they show up and join. They showed up and just joined. And I must say, that was crap-tastic ending. Why the F--- did Penelo give the narration? The only reason she was in the game was because she was following Vaan. If you were gonna give narration to someone who didn't do much.. why not give it to Vayne's younger brother? He did a lot more than Penelo, and actually had a role to play.

Not only that, but the main character, Vaan. Why the hell was he the main character? He seemed so out of place compared to the others (minus Penelo, she had less reason to be there). Ashe had to restore herself to her kingdom. Basche swore to protect the princess to make up for his failure to protect her father. Balthier and Fran figured some ancient royal artifacts could be acquired, which is as good a reason as any for pirate. Vaan was a wannabe. He had no clue what he was actually doing, and was a bit on the dense side, which sometimes made it painful to watch. And we were controlling this twerp! Penelo had less of a reason to be there, but at least we weren't controlling her.

Aren't you glad I can only think of one game to gripe about?

I would have to raise an objection to Oblivion on this list....though I do agree that Oblivion, in of itself, is a rather not-so-good game. The AI is poor and everything is limited and....they put alot of emphasis on the graphics / setting....plus the main campaign was disappointing and short.

What saves it, though? What's made me pour over 180 hours into this game?

The modding.

The open-source, free creativity of the mod community out there. All the problems with the game can be fixed with the right mods, and I can literally create any sort of character I want. Everytime I go online and browse a few mods, something interesting catches my eye and the game gets a fresh new feel with every download. The Oblivion Overhaul is a mod I highly suggest....makes the combat much more challenging, the AI much smarter, and fixes so many bloody annoying problems.

That's why I love Oblivion....and think it doesn't deserve to be hailed as over-rated.

Halo....I think definitely deserves the spot of most over-rated game of all time. It's an ok FPS on a console. I think the only reason why it's hailed as revolutionary and amazing is because it's so easily accessible and requires minimum thought to get jacked into the online world. All ya gotta do is get an Xbox, get Halo, get a head-set, an internet connection, and sign up with Xbox-live....and there ya go! You get all the goodies of multiplayer......

.......that you could easily get with a PC. Only this time, you can sit on a couch all day instead of in a chair. Whoopie.

.....also, before I give up this nomination, I'll uhhh....turn my flame shields to maximum power.

Ooooook.

Final Fantasy 7. It's an alright RPG.....but, that's really about it. I don't feel it deserves the rabid fan-following it has now, and although I did enjoy Advent Children, I think all the new media spawning from it is over-kill. I'm also sick and tired about hearing everyone from high school / college go on and on about how deep the storyline is, how UBERLY BADASS AWESOME HARDCORE Sephiroth was, and how the whole game ushered in a revolution in gaming.....when, really. It didn't. Not at all.

Gears of War is another game that deserves to be hailed as over-rated. It was....ok.....but not that good. I think we've already elaborated on this, though.

Hrm....what else, what else.....

Guitar Hero. That's hailed as the best thing ever, especially on my college campus, and I'm sure it's fun....but, damn man. There's gotta be other things out there. Why must everyone be so uber-hardcore about this game? It sorta kills it for me.....to me, Guitar Hero is just a nice little light-hearted party game. You get together with your friends, jam for a little bit, and that's it. But, I know at least 10 other kids at my college who live, breathe, and shit with their plastic guitar. They can do all the songs on expert level, and totally demolish every competition that comes there way......and that sorta scares me.

And lastly, I'll say....

World of Warcraft. I beta-tested this since phase 2, spent a good 2 years playing / rping on it....and quite frankly, it ain't that good. I quit long before the Burning Crusade came out....and despite what everyone told me, I haven't had any urges to come back to play. Especially seeing all the new shit they've been pumping out. Death Knights....lol wut?. Anyway, the game was never really that good of an MMORPG....it was just easy. And accessible. And easy. And that's it. Once you dinged 60, you either went into PvP or you went into raiding....both of which got insanely boring after a week or so. The game didn't bring any new innovations to the genre, even though many acclaim it to have. It's still just a stale old MMORPG....with just shinier paint.

I guess that's good, for people who like MMORPG's. For a guy like me, though....feh. If it wasn't for the good friends I made while playing that game, I'd have quit after a few months....

So yeah....that's what I think.

=P I don't think FF7 was over-rated. But then again I talked with you over aim on this. Yes, I do agree that the FF7 spinoffs are terrible if not badly over-rated. They're trying to suck as much cash out of the game as possible because Sony is made by Nazis for all I care. But the game itself, when it came out, was great. It was one of the first rpgs to bring a 3d element into it, it was also one of the first to reach 80+ hours of game play. The music was incredible. Lastly, the PS1 would probably not have had one of the nicest launches without the game as a whole, and I speak that with experience. I bought my PlayStation to play FF7.

But I will have to agree with previous posts: FF12 was terribly over-rated. The game was recycled garbage with unlikeable characters, unoriginal dungeons, unoriginal species, and a terrible plot. The only thing FF12 had going for it was the fighting, which was addictive.

I think the same for WoW: it's over-rated garbage with pretty battles. I think all MMORPGS are over-rated, honestly. The only reason someone has to get WoW, that one FF mmorpg, The Sims, SecondLife, or others, is to play with friends they don't have.
