Title: What's good in the hood?

I've been out of the anime loop for a while. Wondering if any of you know of some good series I can start watching again. Looking for something fun to watch when I'm bored, or maybe something with a deep story that's good for a marathon of sorts. Oh hell, who am I kidding, anything with good writing is A-ok!

Not much that's new. SL has gone to shit so my dling pirated anime thing is at a lack. Currently I'm still dling episodes of OnePiece subbed by KaizokuFansubs. They finally got over a filler arc that was incredibly, irreversably annoying. I'm damned happy about that ******er ending.
BlueDragon is a kid anime that came out in the last two or so years about a kid with a blue dragon as a shadow. It has the exact same concept as ShamanKing but with the animation style of DragonBall. They even made a 360 game about it.
Btw, ShamanKing, while older, is a fun decent-sized anime to get into. I liked it when I rented it and it was fun =D
Also old, Blueseed is a really good anime series. About killer plants. BlueGender (not even close to being the same styles of anime) is another good one about killer bugs.
Samurai7 is interesting. An updated version of the oldschool japanese movie about samurai protecting a village of poor people. Except now with giant robots and cyborgs.
BattleAthletes... For some reason I loved the tv series more than the ova... About women doing competitions of strength, like in Ninja Warrior but loads harder. And one girl specifically is trying to be like her mother and get into the major legue, which is in a satelite.
Aria Natural. Loads more settled down and heart warming than everything else. About a crew of women who run miny skiff/boats in the channels of Venis, Italy and how they live their daily lives. It makes real life seem far more interesting and fun.
And last but not least, if you somehow missed the thread Hiko made, Afro Samurai is 5 episodes of intense violence and sword slicing action.

Samurai7 has a really crappy ending. and Blue Dragon, the game for 360, really sucks.
Well anyway, I'm not sure how old it is but I recently watched Basilisk. It started out interesting, like the first 15 mins, then is a just decent. I'd wouldn't watch it twice. 24episodes
"The year is 1614 AD. Two warring ninja clans, each supporting a son of Hidetada Tokugawa as the next shogun, send ten representatives each to fight to the death for the possession of a scroll. The prize: the annihilation of the other and the staunch support of the Tokugawa government for the winning clan for the next thousand years."

I recently discovered a series called Kare Kano, otherwise translated as "His and Her Circumstances." I found out about it after watching a trailer for the new Rebuild of Evangelion, and I was feeling nostalgic for watching a good Gainax series with Hideaki Anno at the helm. That's when I read about Kare Kano, a shoujou-romance series done by Gainax directed by Anno.
I'm up to episode 13 / 26, and I have to say it's one of the best damn series I've seen. I usually don't like romance-based shoujou anime 'cause I find 'em too stupid. Either too stupid or too cutesy or something. Things like Love Hina just frustrate me, 'cause theres too much stupid fluff going on and it's way too zany.
But this one....has the perfect balance of everything. It's serious, without being too serious. It's goofy, without being stupid. It's cute, without having that overwhelming "WAIII KAWAIIIIIIII~ ^_^ DESU DESU!" annoying quality. And the characters are so well developed. The main draw for me is exactly how well developed the main characters are. Normally, when ya watch an anime series, you can rarely ever imagine actually meeting a person portrayed in the series in real life. Kare Kano changes that for me. I actually believe I could meet a girl like Miyazawa, and a guy like Arima. They're very real characters with very real problems, and when the series starts introducing the other characters....it just gets really good.
Plus, Anno's directing is as surreal and insightful as ever. The whole show is full of surrealist style-changing moments that effectively bring out the mood of each character. I find it purely amazing how Anno can find a way to convey so much emotion by doing so little with the camera.....
So yeah. That's my suggestion for ya.

I remember seeing a really great AMV of Kare Kano a long time ago. I always wanted to check it out but never did because, well, I just forgot about the show. :P
Here it is. :P (May contain spoilers but I'm not sure. :P)

Kare Kano I liked a lot. I enjoyed the way they told the love story. I especially liked the way they worked in all parts of their life, not just the love story, but also how it affected they school and social life.
Samurai 7 I never finished but I saw up to episode 21. I liked what I saw. For a remake of a movie that I didn't care for, it did a bang up job.
I've heard a lot of good and bad things about shaman king. Nothing too big. Might check out a few episodes to see what it's like. I've recently stumbled across a series called Mononoke. It's about a wandering medicine seller that exercises vengeful spirits and angry souls. It's very surreal and the symbolism is done to perfection. Unfortunately only the first two episodes are up :(

Ha.....already seen Kare Kano then. I see.....uhm.....
The last really uber-awesome-epic-omgz-I'm-all-philosophical-now-and-shit was Texhnoylze. It was from the same team that did Serial Experiments Lain. It's amazing. Go watch it if ya haven't already.

Truthfully, it's been a while since I've seen a good anime series. I just rented (okay rented it like 3 months ago, but just finally started to watch it) This ugly yet beautiful world. The first episode was great.. but the other 3 episodes on the disk was pretty much introducing characters, and introducing new characters without having anything really from the first episode. I'm hoping the 2nd disc picks up.. although, considering there's only 3 discs total, my hopes aren't very high.
There's an older anime... and it only has 2 episodes (which is sad, since it's hilarious in English) called Shinesman. It's a total ripoff of Power Rangers, but funnier. To be truthful, I watched it back when I was a dubbed fan and not a subbed fan, so I've never seen the subbed version, and I have no idea if it's as funny. They have stupid colors, rather dumb powers (if any, really) and some of the stuff is just golden. Like: "I can't lose to her, she's got bad hair!" and "Oh My God, you killed Caramou, you bumsters!" It's a good crackhead anime, but unfortunately short.
