I beat Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time today. Downloaded it onto my Wii, at that. I can easily see why this is such a huge game.
Bloody well the last battle was a pain in the ass, specially if you die once during it.
I find frustration towards video games one of the funniest things in the world, even if I experience it. I'm all out aggressive at Zelda: OoT, beating on the Game Cube controller, seething, yelling, "COME ON!" at the top of my lungs at a television that could care less - while scaring the crap out of my corgi who thinks I'm angry at him for one reason or another. Then I'm forced to look on the internet at a walk-through to find that my problem at the time is something so inane, so 'right there', that I feel dumb for cheating in the first place.
What's funner is that years of crap games, straight-arrow games, and easy as ****** games have dwindled down my tolerance of old-school hard-ass puzzle games. So instead of looking for another alternative or, say, exploring, I'm instead bull-heading my way through Zelda, getting stuck, and dieing repeatedly until I throw a fit and give up; only to find later that the solution to the problem is to go back or over to some other area and find some item of some variety which is crucial to solving it.
One thing I found silly about my perception of Ocarina of Time was that it was 'old-school'. That is to say, there were times when I started playing it that I said aloud, "Twilight Princess was better at mechanics." ... No shit, Sherlock ~ I would later reply to my own numb-brained statement. I'm glad I eventually came to grasp the fact, albeit knowing this same fact before I started, that the game's mechanics at times were not as good as Twilight Princess because the latter game came out afterwards and fixed said mechanical issues. Silly me.
Tough puzzle games = all time stress relief.
Probably still my favorite Zelda game thus far, even if I also really enjoyed Twilight Princess.
Just something special about it, for me anyway. At the time it was probably one of the best games out and still holds up remarkably well. The graphics and some of the mechanics, obviously, showing their age. But it still plays well, it's still a blast or was last I played it.
Kinda like Shenmue (the first anyway, need to finish my play of the second before saying anything about it), just one of those games I find myself wistfully remembering playing in my youth. Saying to myself, "Now that was a kick ass game".
Nothing quite like whipping out that ocarina, playing a few of the notes from one of those catchy tunes and Epona comes trotting along or you get zapped to another location or some other spiffy effect.
It wasn't one of those all too easy games either, it was a real challenge sometimes (no Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja, but still...), not only did you have to play well, but you had to think and really pay attention at times.
Just reading your post and writing this one makes me wanna bust it out all over again.
Anyone who still hasn't played it or hasn't in a while really should do so.
It's honestly, I think, better than a number of more recent games.
