Title: Good Books out there
KrazyKelli - April 9, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
DOOM! I don't know if I made a thread like this already.
I'm still trying to get back into reading. I like reading fantasy, mainly dragons and stuff. But I'm willing to explore other fantasy genres if they're written well.
So... Can anyone recommend some good books out there that I should check out? Anyone?
Greywolf, you look like you read. Tell me of a good book.

I wasn't sure where this thread was. That is my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
I stared reading Memoirs of a Geisha, not fantasy but's it's not bad.
R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urden series is really good. It consists of a few trilogies. I haven't read the last two novels. Though I haven't really read anything new and outstanding in quiet some time.
http://lavendereyes.rivkashome.com/Fan site that is really good.

I've been reading the Magic the Gathering books lately so I haven't had time to read much else lately. In recent memory I really enjoyed the Belgariad series by David Eddings. And there's a sequel called Mallorean. Classic series that's 5 books each but really worth it. The believable characters and personal / worldwide interactions and the depth the author took it makes it stand out.

Cool, I'll check those out.
Right now I'm reading a book called Dragon Fantastic. It's a bunch of dragon short stories. The downside is that most short story books only have 1/3rd being really good, the rest are either meh or not that good. It's a mixing pot of different authors, after all.
If you think up any older book series from way in the past that I should check out, don't be afraid to bring it up.
The next two on my list to read are "Here there be Dragons", 1 fo 2 from the young reader section, and "Dragon Champion" book 1 of, I think 3 out so far.

Btw, don't forget to tell me the jist of the books you're recommending. I want to know what I'm getting into and the general length of each book.

The Belgariad is about these sorcerers who over thousands of years try to interpret a prophecy and through thousands of years try to set up the prophecy in their favor without knowing it's full meaning. Then at the same time there's a set of bad sorcerers from another continent trying to sabatoge them to make the prophecy in their own favor with their own copy. Then as the books go along they find out more about whats going on as it unfolds to try and keep the bad sorcerers from winning as the prophecy starts to unfold.

Here's a few:
All of the Harry Dresden series of books by Jim Butcher. If you've seen the sci-fi series, it is almost nothing like that whatsoever. All the books aren't too long, 200-300 pages, and generally cover one or more major events in his life (the minor ones happening between books). It's essentially about him being an actual wizard who resorts to private detective work (for the most part) because just being a wizard doesn't pay rent. Several of the clients are supernatural, others are victims of it, and after only the first two or three books you realize there is a very large, overarching storyline which is extremely well thought out. I must of read one of these a day for a little over a week the first time I read it, very good.
The Great War, World War, and World at War series (notice a pattern here?) all by Harry Turtledove. All of the series have books that start out long and generally get about 30 pages longer almost every book until they end :P And he writes them very well, both from soldier, researchers, journalist and other civilian perspectives and the entire time you get very attached to all the characters; several of which he kills off, some due to war, others due to just being old. The Great War is a series of books spanning from the beginning of world war I all the way until the end of world war II in an alternate reality where the south won the civil war and became it's own country. It's very interesting, especially that the North aligns itself with germany in both wars. The World at War series is an extremely interesting high-fantasy series in which a sort of world war breaks out; it has several parallels to world war II; but seperates enough that you guess at what will happen. Also; their replacement for the A-bomb is some of the most awesome magic I've read. And finally, my personal favorite, his World War series is in an alternative history where, during world war II, which has gone exactly to history at this point; aliens invade! It's another very well-written series, with the perspectives of several of the aliens thrown into the mix as well.
well that's all I'll put for now, just keep in mind these are all series, not individual books
