Title: RPGs
Description: What You Own, What's The Best

KrazyKelli - December 8, 2003 09:00 PM (GMT)

What RPG's have you played? Under what console (can be a comp game). Go ahead and make a good big list of all those that you've played..

K then, What are the best RPG's you've played (under each console and overall). Why? What Genre is the game and what - overall - got you into it (the characters, the plot, the music, ya know...)

:D Discuss...

Sha Dao Shai - December 11, 2003 03:59 AM (GMT)
Oh god man... youve totally forgotten all about the Resident Evil series! Best games ever created. Movie sucked... but i'll forgive Capcom.

Lets see...

GC: Resident Evil 3
PC: GTA: Vice City (I know some people consider this FPS, but it definetly has an excellent storyline. I consider it an RPG.)

Issue13 - December 11, 2003 06:58 PM (GMT)
The Resident Evil movie wasn't that bad... way better than the House of the Dead movie...

But really, how can you call either RE or GTA role playing games? You don't level up or get stronger... I think that those are sort of integral parts of an RPG. Having a good storyline does not make something a RPG. If it did, then HALO would be one. Also, for something to be a FPS, it has to be in FIRST PERSON, not third person... whoever thinks that GTA is a FPS is, well, wrong.

RE is Survival Horror
GTA is a Crime Game - this is a new genre, but includes State of Emergency and True Crime: Streets of LA

Sha Dao Shai - December 12, 2003 04:39 AM (GMT)
Isnt role playing about playing the role of a character? I mean... c'mon.

By the way... i do consider GTAIII and Vice City a kind of FPS because, even though they are in 3rd person, they have a targeting reticle and you're always facing forwards on foot.

By the way... has anyone ever read the RE books? Most excellent recommendation on my part.

Rufio - December 12, 2003 09:34 PM (GMT)
Eh, I think that Reiji is correct, at least form what I can tell the common accepted idea of an rpg is as he said, the ability to gain levels, grow strongers, and overall improve your charcaters. And even though the GTA and RE games do allow you to some of that, it isnt really in the true spirit of RPGs, at least thats what I think. And as for FPS...well it has to be in first person like he said, otherwise it's just a shooter game...::shrugs:: Thats just how it goes I guess.

Sha Dao Shai - December 13, 2003 04:35 AM (GMT)
Eh... you may be right... but im still skepticle.

I mean... look at the Legend of Zelda games. You dont really level up in those... I mean sure, you get new items, but the same can be said for GTA and RE.

I like to consider FPS more like Counter-Strike or the Rainbow Six series. GTA and RE however, unlike CS or RS, have an actual storyline. If you even delve into the basics of the RE storyline, its very easy to get lost.

For example, RE3 has a creature called "Nemesis". Do you know how the "Nemesis" is created? No, not from getting slashed by a Licker like in the movie. In fact, Nemesis is actually created from a parasite that is attached to a host. (I cant tell you whether that host is fully human or already part Tyrant... but Nemesis definetly has striking similarities to Tyrant.) Secondly, only two Nemisis parasites have ever been used. 1, for the RE3 Nemesis creature, and 2, for the girl in RE1. (The girl, who had already been subjected to many different experiments, had ended up becoming a parasite TO the parasite. Therefore, she didnt become a Nemesis monster.)

Trust me... RE definetly has a deep storyline with excellent background information. GTA probably has the same too. I think that a RPG really only should require a storyline with some sort of plot other than shooting things and finishing the level. (I know you were about to launch the Doom or Duke Nukem thing on me.)

Issue13 - December 13, 2003 02:21 PM (GMT)
Zelda is a bastardized version of a RPG.. the Action/Adventure RPG. My only requirement for something to get RPG into it's title is the ability to get better stats. Zelda does this, GTA and RE don't. If you think that plot makes something a RPG, then you may as well call Super Mario Bros a RPG. AFter all, do you know WHY Bowswer kidnaps the Princess? No... all you know is that some mushroom looking fatts is "Sorry, but the princess is in another castle." SO very ideep and mysterious.

Sha Dao Shai - December 13, 2003 07:37 PM (GMT)
On the surface... Bowser taking Peach isnt exactly a very deep storyline. But when you start asking questions, THATS when the storyline gets interesting.

For instance, have you ever thought about WHY Bowser would want to take Peach? What would he get out of it? What would a huge spiky dragon want with a small, "beautiful" human princess?

Once you start asking questions like that, then the true storyline begins. I would have never found out all of the things i know about RE if i hadnt asked these questions. Questions that make you want to find out more about a storyline. Those are TRUE RPGs.

Rufio - December 13, 2003 11:47 PM (GMT)
Eh....I suppose you could be correct in saying that, I mean asking questions is a vital part of getting along in any game...but um...dont you think you are over analyzing Mario? I mean Bowser did it cause he is evil...thats about as far as it goes, IMO.

Raguna Megido - December 16, 2003 01:33 AM (GMT)
GTA and Biohazzard/RE are not RPGs. n_n;;;;
GTA is not a FPS either, and only two games I know of in all of RE-dom
that are possibly considered FPS games, and those would be the RE: Survivor games
(ugh.. I played the first, that was bad). The only Mario games that would qualify as RPGs are Super Mario RPG for the SNES (that was pretty fun really) and I think Paper Mario (haven't played it, don't know for sure), at least all I can think of.

Now for KK-sama's orginal questions...

Games I remember playing RPG-wise.

- FF series (Various). I don't remember which I haven't played at the moment, but I'm sure I missed out on a few. >_<

- Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) and FFT: Advance (Game Boy Advance)

- Zelda series (Various) I know I haven't played all in the series, more so than the FF games.

- Xenogears (PSX)

- Xenosaga: Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht (PS2)

- Chrono Trigger (PSX as part of FF collection)

- Chrono Cross (PSX)

- Wild ARMs series (PSX, PS2)

- Star Ocean The Second Story (PSX)

- SaGa Frontier (PSX)

- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSX)

- Suikoden & Suikoden II (PSX), Suikoden 3 (PS2)

- Super Mario RPG (SNES)

- Legend of Legaia (PSX)

- The Legend of Dragoon (PSX)

- Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PSX)

- Parasite Eve (PSX)

- Azure Dreams (PSX)

- Breath of Fire III & IV (PSX), BoF V Dragon Quarter (PS2)

- Dark Cloud (PS2)

- Disgaea (PS2)

- .//hack Infection and Mutation (PS2)

- Grandia (PSX) & Grandia II (Dreamcast)

- Evolution (Dreamcast)

- Time Stalkers (Dreamcast)

- Earthbound (SNES)

There's others I could list but haven't technically played them yet (but I do own them). n_n

As for best on each system? I can't say really. I like so many of them that I got to play (then again there were some real stinkers, which I think thankfully I mostly avoided)... n_n;;;; And what got me into RPGs.. Can't say I just played the right game at the right time and it wasn't FF7 either. =P But I think it was a combination of things, not just one thing, it all came together in a way that I enjoyed and that got me wanting to play more -good- RPGs... Wouldn't believe what game got me into RPGs either.. n.n lol

Tallgeese56 - December 16, 2003 05:52 AM (GMT)

FF series - Everything except the original III (Because it has yet to arrive in the US), X-2 (Must get for Christmas...), and XI.
Zelda series - I've played a few. Can't remember for the life of me which ones they were, other than both of the ones on the N64 and some of the re-releases on the Gameboy/Gameboy Advance.
Tales of Destiny (PSX)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Chrono Cross (PSX)
Xenogears (PSX)
Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
Parasite Eve (PSX)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (PSX) - I must find again!!! I loved this game!!!

Suikoden (PSX)
Legend of Legaia (PSX)

Ultima: Exodus, Quest of the Avatar, and Warriors of Destiny (NES)
Bahamut Lagoon (SNES)

Best NES: Ultima: Exodus
Best SNES: Toss-up between FFVI and Sailor Moon
Best PSX: FFIX, with Tales of Destiny and Star Ocean on its tail
Best PS2: I don't have much in the way of choices there... So it's obviously gonna be FFX until I play a few more.
Best GB/GBA: I'd have to say the Zelda remakes.

Rancor - December 18, 2003 10:15 PM (GMT)
Ahahaha....another rpg thread.....what rpg thread would be complete without the Rancor ranting about his favorite rpg of all time? Well, those who know me know what I'm gonna say. I'll say it later. First I'll post all my rpgs I own....

Harvest Moon
Bahamut Lagoon
FF3/6
FF7
FF9
FF10
FF Tactics
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Diablo II
Dark Ages (my first....and last....and only....MMORPG)
Zelda 1
Zelda 2
Zelda: A Link To The Past
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Zelda DX
Earthbound 0.

And of course.....my favorite....

Earthbound.

2 other favorites of mine would be FF3/6 and Chrono Trigger. I rank it Earthbound, FF3/6, and Chrono Trigger.

But of course, Earthbound is the greatest. It is the best rpg ever made....in my opinion of course. The game is just a game I love so much. It has brought joy to my sad existance, and even today, pratically 8 years after it was made, I still love and cherish it as my treasure. Whenever I beat the game and walk around the place, hearing that song....I still get teary eyed. Yes, I am that much of a loser, and I love it just that much.

So funny....so good....yes I love Earthbound. A masterpiece of a game.

Anyway I'll stop now. But know that I actually did write a 6 page essay on why I love Earthbound. Size 10 font. Turned it in for a 7th grade writing project. So yeah....I could go on.....

Sha Dao Shai - December 24, 2003 02:03 AM (GMT)
Two quick things.

First of all... True Crime: Streets of L.A. is an RPG. If we go by your definition, it does have character power ups, car power ups, etc.

Secondly... The RE movie was terrible compared to the games and the books. I mean... the T-Virus cant piece a human body back together after it has been sliced into a bazillion pieces by lasers (Check the movie. The leader of the good army was killed by Red Queen's lasers, but was somehow brought back together and turned into a zombie.).

I guess that, when a movie doesnt follow the original storyline, originality loyalists get offended. The same happened with the FF movie; even thought i thought it was pretty good, many people ranked on it because it was made off of one of the weakest game's storylines. Same with your House of the Dead argument.

P.S. The zombies in RE movie also looked extremely weak. There was barely any decomposition, if any at all. And the main boss was weak as well.

DemonBonham - January 4, 2004 08:25 PM (GMT)
PSX/PS2 FFVII
SNES: Secret of Mana 2(seiken dentansu 3) and FF VI
NES:Dragon Warrior 1-3
NGC:um...
N64:Zelda Majoras mask
Mac: Escape Velocity, Escape Velocity Override, and Esacape Velocity Nova
PC: Never winter nights

But the best overall RPG in all ways is Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition

The RE movie was bad because they had no Hunters T_T

DemonBonham - January 5, 2004 11:25 PM (GMT)
Whats wrong with FFMQ it was fun

Saizo - January 5, 2004 11:27 PM (GMT)
You thought it was fun too? Yes, it was fun, I just hate to admit that I played it on SNES because of its simplicity...It would've done well being an NES game.

DemonBonham - January 5, 2004 11:51 PM (GMT)
lol some of the monsters in that game were incerdibally hard

Saizo - January 6, 2004 01:19 AM (GMT)
heh, that may be true, but what I'm talking about it how the overall game was like; its battle system, its graphic (not really an issue for me, but its practically NES-like), the limit of 2 characters in a battle, and its bad reviews...
Forget the last part. :P

DemonBonham - January 6, 2004 01:39 AM (GMT)
lol what the reveiws mean to me is nothing... they said SH2 was the best one, but the people had never even played sh1(i looked into it) and lol there just really inaccurate. the character limit as 2 made it unique and the graphic were NES like but ohh well LOL. i say i should have been an NES game but over all its a good game

Saizo - January 6, 2004 04:01 AM (GMT)
7th Saga for SNES from Enix also had a 2 character limit, lol but the story was more deep...in fact, the game was a little too difficult for my taste; I easily got stuck...

Yeah, FFMQ is a good game; just like all FF games are. :D

DemonBonham - January 6, 2004 11:46 AM (GMT)
Enix... creators of Dragon warrior, the first RPG game for nes... they made the first system of MP. They also aet an exampole for RPGs
