Title: Worst RPG's Ever
KrazyKelli - March 15, 2004 05:21 AM (GMT)
Out of all RPGs you've played and/or heard of, what are the worst - in your opinion... Why? Be specific.
What RPgames do you recommend we stay away from?
What, to you, makes an overall bad RPG.
DemonBonham - March 15, 2004 05:34 AM (GMT)
HMMMMM FFX and FFX-2... FFX is by far the worst RPG i;ve ever played BY FAR. FFX had boring characters, a pretty bad story line, and the leveling up system was SH!TY. and FFX-2 is the peice of crap that comes out after the load does. LOL
Cmot Dribbler - March 15, 2004 07:39 PM (GMT)
ohhh what was the title................. uhhh. It was for the snes,
7th quest i think,
i played the 5 stars as well, that one wasnt great, but i liked it.
KrazyKelli - March 15, 2004 09:09 PM (GMT)
oo I hope you're not talking about 7th saga.... Sure the game had oldschool slowpoints.. XD but I so enjoyed playing it. It's like an oldschool gameboy game up on a tv screen!
Rufio - March 15, 2004 10:09 PM (GMT)
Um...I think it was called Shadow hearts...or shadow something...whatever the title was it was a really screwy rpg...the characters were way way way way weird, one was a scarecrow, another was a floating head with a fan on the neck to move...ugh it was just bad, the graphics were horrid, the storyline was dull, and the overall game play was redundant...stay away from it!

Being rather selective, I haven't had much bad experience. The worst game I tried was Saga Frontier. It seemed hard and confusing...
KrazyKelli - March 16, 2004 04:44 AM (GMT)
^^ yeah, Saga Frontier was hard. SF2 was sorta bad. It really didn't go anywhere via plot compaired to 1.
Don't know if it's much of an rp, but Vagrant story - though a good game - Never ENDS. I played the came for over 2 months and where I thought I was close to done, I was only 30% through it. The plot was also slow and most of it was 'hack the enemy.
Lewis Daggart - March 16, 2004 06:27 AM (GMT)
Secret of Evermore.
For one thing, I just couldnt get into the story. Theres not much character developement that can occure between a boy and his dog.
For another thing.. that stupid dog never did ANYTHING right.
The music was sub-par in comparison to other RPGs of the time.
And of course, it was a replacement for Seiken Densetsu 3, which we STILL havent gotten in America.
Rancor - March 16, 2004 11:04 PM (GMT)
Quest 64 is by far the worst RPG I have ever played in my entire existance. Combine a cliche and dull plot, with muddy graphics, horrible gameplay elements, and some of the worst economic set ups....you have a terrible game, my friends.
The gameplay was awkward, and while it TRIED to be original, it just sucked. Basically, you moved around in an octogon and attacked things with Z. After you attacked something, your turn was up. Imagine a game like Diablo or the likes, where your only able to move in a limited space, and every time you slash at the enemy you have to stand there like a complete dolt. The spell system was horribly limited in that you only had 4 elements to control. And you can guess what those elements were!
The music also made my ears bleed. So damn repeptitive, so damn boring, horribly composed. Also, the game DOES NOT HAVE ANY TYPE OF CURRENCY AT ALL! This is what pissed me off. Towns would give you things for free. Now, how is that a bad thing? YOU COULD ONLY CARRY ONE TYPE OF ITEM AT A TIME! You could only carry one piece of bread to restore your health, one mana potion to restore your mana, and a scroll to the town in order to go back to it. The distance between towns was huge too. Random encounters happened every 5 seconds, meaning you'd have to eat your bread after every 15 or so - which happened alot. Meaning you'd have to go through the places more and more while your health drains. Maybe you could get lucky and have an enemy drop a piece of bread when it died, but it happened very rarely. Meaning that you'd probably spend 3 hours in a dungeon with only one item to heal you, and once that item is used its used. Imagine playing Final Fantasy where you could only heal yourself once per dungeon.
Yeah, it was horrifying. There were also no healing spells (at least, not to my knowledge....I only played the game for 4 days before I returned it to the video store....it was the only rpg for N64, so I -tried- to get into it. But it was just THAT BAD.). You were limited to using 4 offensive spells based on the cliche elements of "earth" "wind" "ice" "fire". Mana was also limited, and you were only allowed to carry one mana potion per trip. Your magic spells were your main source of offense, and when you ran out battle became extremely painful, as you could NOT equip ANY type of physical weapon. You were just limited to a plain old wooden staff that sucked all.
Oh yes, I also forgot to mention that you could not change your equipment. THere were no armor shops, no accessory shops, no weapon shops....you started with the same staff and cloth armor, you end with the same staff and cloth armor. This means there was no way to get better defense to get stronger. Also your character was only limited to a wizard. I dont really know if you got other party members or not....but you probably didnt. Seeing how I played the game for a total of 3 hours, and not a new character entered the screen. So its safe to assume you were on your own the entire game. Did I mention the bosses were incredibly hard and cheap? Since you could only carry -one- piece of bread per trip, you were damn limited on when you could heal. And also, the bosses did a huge amount of damage. I mean, HUGE. They would cast level 13 spells when you only had level 4.
Oh yes, the plot was also horribly cliche, dull, and boring. Just another "gather up the crystals before the evil guy gathers them" game. All the characters seemed to be NPCs too. You never really saw anything major develop. Just a boring task of "go to town A, talk to NPCs to find out that mystical item B has been stolen by villain C whos currently hidding in Forest D. Beat Villain C, return to town A, and get rewarded with Magical Talisman E. Go to Town B, rinse, lather, repeat."
Its a very boring game, with very bad controls, gameplay, character (thats right, its not plurarl - there is only one main character in this game and thats you. Everyone else was just a NPC), economy, music, and graphics. Everything about Quest 64 was just bad.
I say this with all my heart, when I say Quest 64 is by far the worst RPG of all time. The only good part about this game, was turning it off.
Rufio - March 16, 2004 11:46 PM (GMT)
Ugh....Quest 64....I forgot about that game, and for good reasons too...lol...I made the mistake of playing it for a long long time...I got about three quarters of the way through...a miracle by what I can see....it is unbelieveable how horrible that game was. Your right Rancor, you dont get any other party memebers....so it's you, the staff, the bread, and your gay spells through the entire game...it made me want to cry.
Issue13 - April 11, 2004 11:13 AM (GMT)
Rancor, your hatred runs deap.. i respect that. In fact, I have decided that Quest 64 if now my most hated RPG, eventhough i have never played it.
Actually, my most hated RPG is Beyond The Beyond for PS1. Nothing original about a boy and some sort of flying cat/dragon/baby that helps him out. You also have a pudgy friend and a girl... and well.. it played a lot like lunar.. but without plot. In fact, the game didn't even tell you where to go, the map was huge and random encounters happened every 3 steps. I was never able to make any proress in that game.
Chibi Chichiri - April 13, 2004 04:01 AM (GMT)
@Issue: Dude, I almost thought you were talking about Lunar, until you got to the part about there being no plot.
On the topic of worst RPGs, I'd have to go with FFX and FFX-2. Although RE has covered most complaints, I have another to add. :P
My main complaint is the fact that both games were too incredibly easy. FFX did have its hard parts, which was basically the third fight with Seymour and the fight against Yunalesca. Past that, everything was very easy because you could switch your characters in the middle of the fight. Are Tidus, Rikku, and Wakka not doing the amount of damage you like to some stupid monster? No problem! Just switch in Auron, Lulu, and Yuna, and it'll be over before you know it! ...No. Even the final boss was a joke. All it ever did was heal itself. I heard that it does attack you with Ultima, but I usually killed it before it ever had a chance.
FFX-2 gets the same response from me. Way too easy. The main reason the game exists is so you can watch three girls, who already wear practically nothing, get naked. :P And like in FFX, the ability to switch jobs made everything very simple. I managed to get halfway through Ch. 5 at around lv. 35 before I actually had to start leveling up for some of the later bosses.
Final Fantasy games are supposed to be a challenge. These games are not. You want a good FF game? Go play FFV or FFVI. :P
Issue13 - April 14, 2004 04:31 AM (GMT)
What is with all the hating on FFX and FFX-2. Just because you didn't have to "level up" doesn't mean that it is bad. In fact, I like the fact that you can just play through it without running back and forth waiting for random encounter after random encounter. These games had a little something I like to call "plot." Now several other FF games have better plots... FFIV and FFVI for instance, but you can't knock a game just because it doesn't cater to the "must achieve level 99" syndrome (MALNNS). Of course, there are also plenty of rare and hard to find items in FFX and FFX-2in case you do suffer from MALNNS.
Was there a lot of eye candy in FFX-2? Hell yeah. Was it fun to check out all the costumes? Hell yeah. This game had a great balance of newcomer friendliness and oldschool hack and slash to it.
IMO, you aren't allowed to talk about how easy it is until you get both hidden dance books and max out each dressphere at least once.
Chibi Chichiri - April 14, 2004 09:21 PM (GMT)
@Issue: You pretty much get the dance books when you get Episode Completes in Mushroom Rock Road and Djose Temple. The dressphere part... I'm almost there. The only pains that I have are with the Ribbon ability on the Mascot and the Elixir ability on the Alchemist. Of course, with the AP Egg, those will now be a breeze. And I was actually surprised by how simple the Special Dresspheres are to master. You'd think they'd be the harder ones...

Well I loved ffx. Beat it and immidiately wanted to play through it again. The only thing I really hated about the game is that there werent really "sidequests" perse.. just ''find a strategyguide and follow along until you get the weapons and unlock them because theres no way in hell you'll figure all that out on your own'' quests.
If ffxii is like ffx, I'll be disapointed. But on its own, I thought ffx was a really good game.

Okage: Shadow King
Eww...I don't know why I played through this game. The storyline was mediocre, the battle system was sluggish, and the graphics were sub-par.
One of the only pluses are the character designs. They were quite well done and fit well in the world. A very interesting cast of personalities.
Overall, I'd give this game a 3/10. It just wasn't as great as it first appeared to be, in my opinion.
WanderingFool - June 20, 2004 10:41 PM (GMT)
I make it my personal mission to at least try all the rpg released on these shores and for most part I am successful, What can I say I am obsessed when it comes to rpgs. One of the worst games I have ever played was that latest Saga release by square. I really dug Sagafrontier 1 and 2, but the third was just so overwhelmingly bad that I tossed it after completing only one of the character's scenarios.
