(contains spoilers of League of Extrodinary Gentleman, Tomb Raider 2, and Wild Wild West)
From just seeing the movie of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen got me thinking of this. How many times have we seen this cliche going on? I can't think of many examples right now, but another is definately the Tomb Raider 2 movie. I want to see something with a little more depth to it, just selling off the strongest weapon to the highest bidder doesn't cut it for me, where's the assurance of your own survival?
Especially in Tomb Raider 2. That guy was going to open pandora's box and open a plague so massive into the world it would almost destroy all of humanity. So what if the guy got tons of money? What the heck use would that be if he died from it also? There was no assurance of his own survival, he said he'd have a cure, but how possible is that? It wasn't even possible for him to know if he "could" make a cure or not.
Now I just thought of Wild Wild West. The villain in that movie had a similar plan, to develop highly technological weapons for his own selfish ambitions. The only difference in that was that he wasn't selling out to the highest bidder, but in my opinion, rather assuring that the other countries like him by giving them all their previously owned land. But that's what he had, a plan for after he had controled everything, which Tomb Raider and LoEG didn't.
Look at LoEG, the guy developed highly technological devices, pitted the countries against eachother, and gave them a desire for weapons that only he could produce. Now he'd get tons of money, but what would he be left with? Once one of those countries gets the weapons - and superheros - they would control the world, technically. What good would his money do him then? He just sold himself out, because he gave someone else the advantage which he previously had.
What I think would be cool to see is the same situation they had on LoEG, but that the villain had a more devious plan. Say he sold the weapons, and then pitted the countries against eachother even further. What way, by still controlling events in the world, he'd of gotten all that money from selling things, and still be on top, not to mention the move would be way better and the creators gain quite more respect for how they pulled it off.
yeah, it seems like you've really thought it out, unlike many typical villains.
maybe the villen sells a super weapon, but he secretely has his own mega-super weapon of destruction, which will give him an advantage after he uses their money to set up his own base and takes over the world.
