Title: Survival Football
Description: Everyone is back in...
JoeCub - August 9, 2004 05:55 PM (GMT)
It's a simple game. Pick the winner of one football game a week and you live to play again next week. Pick the loser and you are eliminated! The catch? Once you pick a team to win you can never pick that team again in the current session. For example, if you pick Philly to win week #1 you can't pick pick Philly again in the current session. If someone wins before the end of the season we reset everyone's status to active and start a new session. There is no draft, no rosters, no fiddling with the lineup every week. You just pick the winner of ONE game a week until there is only one person left and then that person is the winner. It's limited to 50 players so sign up early

Yahoo! Sports Survival Football
Overview
Welcome to Yahoo! Sports Survival Football, a weekly game that challenges you to show your skills by correctly identifying a winning professional football team in each of the 17 weeks of the regular season. Each week you must select one team that you suspect will be a winner in their game that weekend. If that professional team wins, you remain Active and are allowed to pick again the following week. If the professional football team you selected loses (or the game ends in a tie), you are Eliminated from the competition and may no longer make future picks.
To make this simple sounding game more of a challenge, you can only select each professional football team once while an Active member of an individual group.
Joining the Game
Yahoo! Sports Survival Football is a free game that runs through the entire 2004 professional football regular season -- which begins on Thursday, September 9 and is scheduled to end on Sunday, January 2. You may join the game at any time between Wednesday, July 14 and Friday, December 31. The first deadline for submitting a selection is 11:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, September 8.
Users can join a maximum of 10 groups (either Public or Private) over the course of the professional football season, but may not have an Active status in more than one Public Group at a time.
Lastly, you may only leave a group if you do so before the group's first pick deadline. After the deadline passes, you will be locked in as member of that group and cannot leave it. Additionally, you may not join a specific group after its first pick deadline has passed.
Public Groups vs. Private Groups Create a Private Group and personally invite up to 50 of your friends or office mates to join. As the commissioner, you can reset the status of all members of the group to Active and start over again in the event that a Group Winner is crowned prior to the end of the season. To join someone else's Private Group, you must get the Group ID# and Password from the group's founder.
If you don't yet have a whole group ready to sign up, join one of our Public Groups and test your expertise against fans from around the world.
No user can be Active in more than one Public Group at a time, but once a user is Eliminated from their current Public Group (and therefore no longer able to make picks), they are free to join a new one and will be allowed to make picks in subsequent weeks. Game Basics The object of Yahoo! Sports Survival Football is to be the last Active member of your individual group. In order to accomplish this goal, a user must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.
But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season (this does not carry across multiple groups).
If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated. Pick Submission Deadline For all Public and Private Groups, the deadline to submit your final pick for the week is 11:59 p.m. PT on the day before the first game of that week. For almost all weeks, this deadline will be 11:59 p.m. PT on Saturday, but it will change when there are Thursday or Saturday games. Update Schedule The Active/Eliminated status within an individual group will be updated after each night of games is completed. The Overall Results and Pick Distribution percentages will be updated after the final game of each week (typically Monday). |

To the few that joined, make your pick for this week soon. Deadline for this week is Thu Sep 9 1:59am CDT. Good luck! :D
shortysareawesome is the winner of the first round. We'll reset and everyone else is back in for next week. Make your picks before next weekend.
ithreeputt - September 20, 2004 01:51 AM (GMT)
That was quick. :D
So I wasn't the only one knocked out in the first week?
JoeCub - September 20, 2004 04:59 AM (GMT)
I think four of us went out the first week and 3 more bit the dust today and that left shortysareawesome as the last one standing. Does anyone know who shortysareawesome is?
JoeCub - September 24, 2004 05:12 PM (GMT)
The deadline is looming for this weeks picks. Get them in before Saturday night! :moon2:
Last reminder or I will win round 2 since I'm the only one that has made a pick for this week! :D
Deadline is Sun Sep 26 1:59am CDT
Edit: If I get the pick right that is...that's no guarantee! :D
NCCubbieFan - September 26, 2004 05:05 AM (GMT)
I joined three of these leagues (one I started myself), and I was eliminated in one of them each of the first two weeks. :(
The Browns' win over the Ravens in Week 1 and the Jaguars' win over the Broncos in Week 2 did me in.

Looks like the earlier topic was deleted...
Round 2 just ended. Round 2 winners were JoeCub and Yanr. We both missed this weeks pick. Who would've thought the Dolphins would beat the Rams???
Anyway the league has been reset so everyone is back in it for round #3.

Yanr and ithreeputt are the only two remaining after this week.
Round 3 co-winners are ithreeputt and yanr.
Group is reset for round 4 and everyone is back in. Make your pick before next Saturday evening. (11/20/04)
Just a reminder. Get your picks in this week BEFORE Thursday. Early deadline with the Turkey day games this week.

I'm in a losers pool where you have to pick a loser each week and just like the survivor pool you only can pick a team once. The entry fee was $20 with the winner getting $2500, runner-up $1500, and 3rd place $1000. There are currently 16 of the original 250 entries left. The good thing for me is I have not used any team with a sub .500 record yet. Thankfully the Steelers got me through using the Patriots and Eagles. These are the teams I've used so far.
Week-1. Indianapolis
Week-2. Pittsburgh
Week-3. Green Bay
Week-4. Baltimore
Week-5. Jacksonville
Week-6. San Diego
Week-7. NY Jets
Week-8. New England
Week-9. Philadelphia
Week-10 Minnesota
Week-11 NY Giants
It is getting more difficult to find a team with a decent record to pick so I might have to start using the obvious losers. I'd like to save those bad teams as some of the others left are running out of the garbage teams to use. What do you guys think of using St. Louis on Monday at Green Bay this week? or do you think I should look at one of the bad teams like Oakland at Denver on Sunday night?
JoeCub - November 24, 2004 08:29 AM (GMT)
Wow...I'd really hate to give you bad advice. St. Louis has the Dusty Baker of the NFL coaching them in Mike Martz. They are loaded with talent and are capable of scoring 35 points on any given day but they usually play below their talent level. Miami's lone victory was over the Rams.
I think the one game I wouldn't pick against is Oakland against Denver. They usually get sky high for the Bronco's but they are a bad, bad team. Another problem of going with a bad team is you have so many bad teams playing other bad teams this week like Dallas vs Chicago, Miami vs SF, Tenn vs Hou., and TB vs Carolina...any of those teams are capable of pulling a defeat from the jaws of victory.
After saying all of that I think it will be cold in GB Monday night and I don't think that passing game will be able to do much. If you want to go with one of the sub .500 teams I don't see any way in hell Wash. can knock off Pittsburgh but hey, I didn't see any way for Miami to beat STL earlier either.
Good luck...

I think I might be better off picking Washington and living to see another week.
Those AFC West rivalry games that involve Oakland, Denver, or KC usually scare me as well. However, Denver will have all day to get liquored up and Invesco Mile High stadium will be rocking. Throw in how Plummer plays at home, and I can't see Oakland winning. Favre has been on fire and Martz IS the Dusty Baker of the NFL (i.e. the most overrated coach in the league) so I don't see how the Packers lose. But then again, I didn't think the Packers could lose to the Titans at Lambeau on a Monday night and they got waxed. Of course, now that it's Deer hunter hunting season in Wisconsin all the wackos show up at the game.

I hope you went with Washington and not Oakland because Oakland pulled off the upset IN Denver. I had a feeling... :D

I actually went with Tennessee and am still alive. But I was sweating it out. I figured since I was picking the Texans as the guaranteed winner, I should choose the Titans as the guaranteed loser. Fortunately it worked out. I know at least three people picked the Raiders to lose and 2 others picked the Cowboys. Hopefully a few more were eliminated.
JoeCub - November 29, 2004 03:40 PM (GMT)
I saw the early score in that Tenn/Houston game and I was hoping you didn't go with that one. Tenn was winning 21-3 in the 2nd quarter but later I saw Houston came back and won 31-21. I still don't know how Denver managed to lose that game to the Raiders. I watched it and still don't know how it happened as Denver blew a 24-13 lead in the 4th quarter! That game might have cost me the office pool this week.
ithreeputt - November 29, 2004 08:34 PM (GMT)
I thought I had made a mistake when Tennessee jumped out to the lead like they did. Fortunately, the Texans got their act together and I'm still in the running for the money. Nine of the remaining 16 went out. Four people picked the Raiders, two picked the Cowboys, two picked the Bills, and 1 picked the Bengals (I appreciate but don't understand that pick). I think I have a nice advantage over the other 6 left in the pool since I have not picked any of the horrible teams yet and none of the others have the dredges of the league available to choose. I do have a bit of a problem however. If there is more than one team alive following the regular season, you have to pick a loser in the playoffs and I may be out of teams to choose. I've got to hope that Denver, Seattle, St. Louis, and Atlanta at least make the playoffs. Realistically, I'd be happy to make the final 3 as the 3rd place money would be a nice bonus. In 7 years of participating in this pool, only once has it lasted into the playoffs and the 2 people left both picked the wrong Superbowl loser when New England won it's first title. Of course, I've never lasted past week 8 before this year so I should temper my excitement a bit.

I won the latest round thanks to the Bears knocking off the Vikings. Who'd a thunk it? :D
League is reset for this week. Everyone is back in.

I thunk it. The Bears have beaten the Vikings at home esch of the last three years. While I got knocked out of Survival football because I forgot to play, I advanced to the final 3 in my losers pool guaranteeing me at least a $1,000 payout when the Bears won knocking 3 people out. The Chargers kept me alive by beating the Broncos. I've got to hope that the other two get knocked out or else I won't have a team I can pick to lose in the playoffs except for the garbage teams in the NFC that make it.
