Venezuela proposes hosting part of World Baseball Classic

The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela offered to host part of next year's World Baseball Classic in place of Puerto Rico and suggested moving the final to Canada, proposals aimed at keeping Cuba in the 16-team tournament.

Such an arrangement would open the way for communist-led Cuba to participate in the first World Cup-style baseball tournament. Cuba is banned from playing on U.S. soil, and Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth.

"We hope that the United States government changes its position," Edwin Zerpa, president of the government-run Venezuelan Baseball Federation, said Wednesday. "But, if not, we propose that Group C play in Caracas. We don't approve of Cuba's exclusion."

Only teams in Group C — Olympic champion Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Panama — would be invited to play in Venezuela, with the final in Canada, Zerpa told The Associated Press by telephone.

The tournament will run March 3-20 in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan. The semifinals and final are scheduled for San Diego.

The U.S. Treasury Department has rejected Cuba's tournament application, apparently because of concerns that Fidel Castro's government could enjoy financial gain by participating.

Major League Baseball and its union — the tournament organizers — reapplied to the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control. OFAC's permission is required under U.S. regulations governing transactions with Cuba, which has been under an American trade and financial embargo for more than four decades.

The Cuban Baseball Federation has said any money earned by the national team would be donated to Hurricane Katrina victims.

Venezuela plays in the first round in Group D in Kissimmee, Fla., with Australia, Italy and the Dominican Republic. Canada plays in Group B in Arizona with the United States, Mexico and South Africa.

Venezuela, counting on a lineup featuring All-Stars Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins and Bobby Abreu of the Philadelphia Phillies, is considered among the top teams. Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins and Freddy Garcia of the White Sox most likely will pitch for Venezuela, which will be managed by New York Yankees coach Luis Sojo.

See, it's only good if Fidel Castro's friends enjoy financial gains.

I really hope the deal works out to keep Cuba in the WBC. It would be a shame and a poor reflection on the US if they're kept out.

COOL...he can strain the groin early this year. It will be great having a Neifi/Mabry 3rd base combo most of the year. :(

Ramirez to play in World Baseball Classic
The Associated Press
January 5, 2006, 2:05 PM CST

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez has been named to the Dominican Republic team for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, his first opportunity to represent his homeland.

Ramirez, 27, was selected to play third base for the Caribbean nation after New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez's decided not to play in the inaugural tournament.

"I want to represent the Dominican Republic. I have never had the opportunity to represent my country," he told the newspaper Listin Diario, noting that he had not played for the Dominican Republic in the annual Caribbean Series.

Ramirez said he was excited to play on a Dominican team that will feature some of the best players in Major League Baseball. Sluggers David Ortiz, Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada, Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez and Alfonzo Soriano are expected to play for the island nation.

Ramirez, who was born in Santo Domingo, said injuries keep him from playing in the Dominican winter league alongside other major leaguers.

In 2005, he batted .302 with 31 home runs and 92 RBIs for the Cubs despite missing the end of the season with a leg injury.

Dear Joe, How did Sammy Soso get named in that group anyways? In addition, weren't we told that he'd be telling us of his great new contract, from one of the many suitors for his services by now? Best regards, Cle

Cle,

Obviously by past accomplishments. ;)

With so many offers I'm sure Sammy is just taking his time to pick the best option for himself. <_<

IBAF threatens to revoke sanctioning of WBC if no Cuba

The Associated Press News Service

NEW YORK -- Baseball's world governing body threatened to withdraw its sanctioning of the World Baseball Classic unless the U.S. government allows Cuba to compete.

A letter was faxed from International Baseball Federation president Aldo Notari informing Major League Baseball of the IBAF's decision, said Rich Levin, a spokesman for the MLB commissioner's office, on Friday.

It is unclear whether the 16-team tournament, scheduled for March 3-20, would go forward without the IBAF's sanction. The tournament is being jointly administered by MLB and the MLB Players Association.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control in mid-December denied the request for a license to allow Cuba to participate. The license is necessary because of U.S. laws governing certain commercial transactions with the Fidel Castro-controlled nation.

MLB reapplied on Dec. 22 after Cuba said it would donate any money it earned from its participation to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The commissioner's office and the union said OFAC had not told them of its decision on the revised application.

"We're hopeful that Cuba will be able to play," Levin said.

Good news that Cuba is involved and good of Cuba donate profits to Katrina victims (but how much of that will actually end up with the victims...and not in the pockets of the cronies is still unknown).

U.S. Allows Cuba Into Baseball Classic

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer

Cuba will be allowed to play in the World Baseball Classic, after all.

The U.S. Treasury Department issued a license Friday allowing the Cubans to participate in the 16-team tournament.

Baseball's first application was denied in mid-December by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, but the commissioner's office and the players' association reapplied after Cuba said it would donate any profits it receives to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

U.S. laws aimed at punishing Fidel Castro's communist government prohibit certain commercial transactions with Cuba, generally attempting to deny money.

"Working closely with World Baseball Classic Inc. and the State Department, we were able to reach a licensable agreement that upholds both the legal scope and the spirit of the sanctions," Treasury spokeswoman Molly Millerwise said.

"This agreement ensures that no funding will make its way into the hands of the Castro regime. The Treasury is pleased to now be able to issue this license and looks forward to seeing all of the teams showcase their talents on the international stage."

After the initial rejection, the International Baseball Federation threatened to withdraw its sanction of the tournament if Cuba was not allowed to participate and Puerto Rico threatened to withdraw as a host.

"We were always positive," said Antonio Munoz, the promoter who paid millions of dollars to stage the first two rounds in Puerto Rico. "There were some negative people, but they were wrong in the end. I always said there was no Plan B. There was only one plan: That Cuba would come and that all efforts should be focused on obtaining approval."

U.S. Olympic Committee chairman Peter Ueberroth had called on the Bush administration to reverse its decision, saying banning Cuba could hurt future American Olympic bids.

Initial reaction to Friday's decision among Cuban fans was positive.

"Oh, magnificent! Tremendous!" exclaimed Osvaldo Herrera, who was standing on a street corner in Havana with three other sports lovers discussing Cuban baseball.

The tournament, the first in which the world's top players will participate on national teams, runs from March 3-20. The other 15 teams submitted their 60-man preliminary rosters earlier this week.

Cuba won the Olympic gold medal in 1992, 1996 and 2004, and the United States won in 2000. Olympic baseball was initially limited to amateur players, but even after professionals were allowed in for the 2000 Sydney Games, major leaguers didn't participate because baseball doesn't stop its regular season for the Olympics.

Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and Roger Clemens are among the big-name players on the U.S. roster, and Manny Ramirez, Albert Pujols and Vladimir Guerrero are on the Dominican team. Puerto Rico and Japan also are expected to be among the top teams at the tournament.

Cuba is in Group B with Panama, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands, playing its first-round games in San Juan. If they advance, the Cubans also would play their second-round games in San Juan.

Other first-round sites include Kissimmee, Fla.; Phoenix; Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Tokyo. Second-round games also will be played in Anaheim, Calif., and the semifinals and final will be in San Diego.

I'd rather they just cancel the whole thing. Someone is going to get hurt and most likely it will be a Cub. Jinx...curse...you know what I'm talkin' about!

Osa, that would be a great getaway. I wish I had some vacation time and could get away in March.

And I'm not being pessimistic. I'm pretty optimistic that a Cub will get hurt! :P Most likely Ramirez will pull something. :(

Seriously, why didn't they do this thing right after the World Series instead of waiting until spring training?
