To all, Woohoo, who'da thunk it? :o We already knew he used, as he admitted it. Remember how he blamed Baroid? Geez, I'm almost in agreement with Mark Kanges. In fact, I'd like to forget the entire era. Can we just erase the 90's?
Best regards, Cle

New book takes a swing at Sheffield

The N.Y. Daily News
BY T.J. QUINN

Gary Sheffield's claims that he never knowingly used steroids take a beating in the book that has already devastated Barry Bonds' assertions.

"Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional Sports," by San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, alleges extensive use of testosterone, human growth hormone, "the cream" and "the clear," contradicting his claim in 2004 that he only used a cream he thought "was like a cortisone to heal (surgical) wounds."

The book, which is in stores on Thursday, also describes Jason Giambi's steroid use, including the fact that he received the BALCO drugs at his home and his parents' home, but there are no notable revelations about Giambi because, unlike Bonds and Sheffield, he gave himself up to the BALCO grand jury in 2003.

Major League Baseball officials did not respond immediately to calls for comment, but with commissioner Bud Selig preparing to announce an investigation into Bonds, Sheffield may also find his own past being probed. According to the book, at the time the athletes began taking the drugs, they were not banned or tested for by baseball, but were illegal without a doctor's prescription.

"(Bonds' trainer Greg) Anderson put Sheffield on some of the same performance-enhancing drugs that Bonds was then using: injectable testosterone and human growth hormone. Later, Sheffield would insist he never knowingly took banned drugs. But a drug calendar Anderson kept for him reflected Sheffield's use of Growth and testosterone in 2002," the book says.

Besides revealing Sheffield's alleged use, the book describes a twisted relationship between the two surly stars, expanding on what Sheffield told Sports Illustrated in 2004 about their time together in '02.

"Bonds had sought Sheffield's friendship, repeatedly inviting him to California to work out during the offseason, but he demanded the same deference from Sheffield that he received from (Jason) Giambi. Sheffield sincerely liked and respected Bonds, but Bonds' condescension was sometimes a problem for him. Barry is good, he told acquaintances, but I'm good too."

The book also says that Bonds took over Sheffield's workouts, medical care and recovery, making Sheffield miserable. Sheffield and his wife lived at Bonds' home during the offseason, and Sheffield apparently grew angry that Bonds insisted on getting them up at 6 a.m. to go through grueling workouts. Bonds, the book says, told Sheffield to have his knees repaired after the 2002 season, then forced him to start running and lifting weights ahead of schedule, and berated him for complaining.

Odd, isn't it? Giambi was the poster boy for the Bay Area chemically-enhanced slugger, but will end up with the least damage because he fessed up about his use (kind of).

By lying (allegedly), Bonds and Sheffield are going to come out with the really battered reputations - they're not only drug cheats but they're blatant liars.

Well, then you're probably hoping he's found a new "friend" to help him with his training and supplements. B)
