LaRussa charged with drunken driving

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving after police said they found him asleep inside his running sport-utility vehicle at a stop light and smelling of alcohol.

La Russa, 62, gave two breath samples and was determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.093%, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida's legal driving limit is 0.08%.

Undercover officers first saw La Russa's SUV partially in an intersection around midnight and not moving despite several green lights, police said. Officers knocked on the vehicle's window and La Russa did not initially respond.

The SUV was in drive and running, with La Russa's foot on the brake, police said. When he eventually woke up, the officers asked him to get out of the SUV.

He was arrested around midnight and booked in the Palm Beach County jail on the misdemeanor about four hours later, according to police and jail records.

La Russa was cooperative, police said.

The Cardinals play spring training games at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

A few more details in the Sun Sentinel article at Cards manager La Russa arrested on DUI charge in Jupiter.

Will he get a bonus if he can prove a clydesdale got him drunk?

The Cardinals released the following statement this morning:

"The St. Louis Cardinals and Major League Baseball have been made aware of the announcement made by (police) regarding manager Tony La Russa and we take these matters very seriously.

"The Cardinals organization remains supportive of Tony and we understand that he has enlisted representation to advise him through any pending legal process.

"The Cardinals apologize for any embarrassment and or distraction this reported occurrence has created towards the team and its loyal fans."

MLB should remove the first twenty wins from the Cardinals this season. :P

Crap Joe, that's hardly fair. That will leave the Deadbirds with only 42 wins this year... ;)

Spoken like a true Cub fan in the early spring. :P

The Deadbird can go 42-120 and still find a way to win the Divsion and the World Series. Still wondering how you can go 82-80 and win it all/

If the Cards go 42-120 the Cubs would just go 22-140 to just keep 20 games behind. Oh yea and all 22 game would be won agianest the Cardinals and Astros.

Sammy Sosa is back! Cheater, juicer, corker, and otherwise a sleazebag! Ah....but the great memories of the broken corked bat....the "Me, Me" asshole....the guy who cut out early because "I am ME!"

Screw Sosa!

Yet, Tony La Russa makes an honest mistake...about which we know nothing...and, the idiot Cubs fans are ready to crucifiy him.

I got news for you guys...especially, you, Mark....you can take Tony down "off the cross" now and get on with your baseball lives.....

Tony doesn't need you....or, me.....his record and integrity speaks for thmeselves....unlike the ilk you love in Sosa.

I don't know Zip. Sosa's bat corking didn't endanger any lives. LaRussa's driving while drunk did. Not trying to change your mind about Sosa. You obviously have your mind made up about him. I just don't consider a DUI an "honest mistake".

Speaking of "me me me," who exactly do you think Tony LaRussa was thinking of that night? Obviously not anyone whose life he put in danger by his foolish actions. Driving drunk is about as self-absorbed as you can get. Equating the dangers that can arise from such an action with corking a bat is a stretch at best. Besides, I don't see anyone here crucifying him anyway.

I had moved on. I watched the Cardinals play Sunday night and the DUI never even came to my mind. You reminded me of it though when you replied.

ZipDog - April 3, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)
I believe it is wonderful that you have "moved on," Iowa.....

That is a good thing....and, it is for me, too.

Regarding Sosa....he "no speakie English!" Except in Texas....in 2007.....

So....who the heck knows?!?!?!
