To all, Today, I incorporate this daily diddy to make us all giddy. Best regards, Cle

Poor Gene would know a thing or two about lost games, especially down the stretch.

Dear IYP, Yes. There talent pool was always incredibly low back then , unlike the past decade. Who is their winningest piycher of all time ? Bill Stoneman, the ex-Cub perhaps ? I will have to go and look. Best regards, Cle

Just a guess on my part, but I'd think the winningest Expo pitcher is likely Steve Rogers. I assume you were referring to the Expos since you mentioned Stoneman. I'm quite sure Rogers and Stoneman are probably 1-2, whichever order it is.

NC, Bingo, you win the big prize . Good job. Most wins: 158, Steve Rogers, 1973-85. Best regards, Cle

Dear NC, Let's see. I have quite a few not so valuable baseball cards. Would you like a Don Kessinger White Sox card perhaps ? best regards, Cle

NC,

If the card is one with Don in the White Sox softball uniform, you've got yourself a treasure.

How wrong you were Mr. Mack. How wrong you were. Thirty years ago, I could get a bleacher seat for $1.50 and a box seat for $6. I could also buy a ticket the day of the game (without going into debt to pay a broker). But, I will happily pay whatever the cost to sit at Wrigley Field.

Kind of ironic that Gibby would say that. On the baseball field, he didn't have many friends and he completed more than half of his starts in his career. I think he had 6 or 7 years where he completed at least 20 games during the season with 28 as his high a couple of times. Gibson also pitched for the Cards against the Cubs in the first MLB game I ever saw in August of '68 at Wrigley (and yes, he pitched a complete game in a 3-1 win against Joe Niekro). Too bad, at almost 5 years of age I was too young to appreciate how special Gibson was that season. All I remember from that game was the mean scowl Gibson had on his face every time he went to the mound from the dugout (that and the fact that my grandfather would buy me all the junk I wanted to eat whenever we went to Wrigley). What I want to know, is how did Gibson lose 9 games in '68 with a 1.12 era and a WHIP of about 0.8?

Don't worry Joe. I took no offense whatsoever.
Funny stuff. ;)

JoeCub - March 22, 2004 07:56 PM (GMT)
After I posted it I thought Whoa...Art might take offense to that so I edited it. The comment was born out of amazement after reading a few threads at the STL Today message board. It seems anyone that plays for the Cubs is a no talent bum but once that same player becomes a Cardinal he's the 2nd coming of Ruth!

artvark - March 22, 2004 08:00 PM (GMT)
Womack and Tavarez huh...idiots. It's natural to be a homer of your team...but it's another thing to have blinders on.

JoeCub - March 22, 2004 08:01 PM (GMT)
Especially Tavarez....they think he is their savior.

artvark - March 22, 2004 08:07 PM (GMT)
Oh brother. There's a very good reason he's bounced around so much...HE STINKS ON TOAST!!!

JoeCub - March 22, 2004 08:13 PM (GMT)
If they are banking their season on Tavarez then it's a good thing for us. Also they found an article from some writer for Baseball Prospectus that isn't as high on the Cubs as the rest of the baseball world so now of course that writer is the only one that matters.

Joe,

What a great quote. Can I borrow it? I'd like to put it on a T-shirt and wear it when the Cubs play the Cardinals.

Art,

I too come from a dysfunctional family. I have a brother who is not only a Cardinal fan, but a White Sox fan as well. Funny thing though, for the life of me, I sometimes can't seem to remember his name.

My brother and I may not see eye to eye very often...but at least he's a Cubs fan. Too funny.

ithreeputt - March 27, 2004 04:16 AM (GMT)
Art,

My brother the Sox/Cards fan is 20 years younger than I am and the youngest of 6 boys. I don't think he is really much of a Sox/Cards fan as much as he is trying to be different in the family. In fact, the only time I ever see him openly root for one of those teams is if ALL six of us guys get together at one time. I have caught him on more than one occassion rooting for the Cubs when he didn't think anyone was around and I know he went to about 30 games at Wrigley each of the last three seasons, so I think there is hope for him yet.

If I recall Stuart was nicknamed Dr. Strangeglove. I only read about him, but it sticks in my mind that he wasn't exactly a gold glover.
