Title: My Goldfish Had Babies!
X-Evolutionist - August 16, 2005 02:07 PM (GMT)
Have you ever had baby goldfish survive in your pond? I have high hopes.....
Tommy - August 16, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
i dont think they can depending on what type of fish they are with, how many fish, how many hiding spots, and how big the pond is.
X-Evolutionist - August 16, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
Our pond is all lined with rocks. I think there would be a lot of hiding places between the rocks. Our pond is about 11'x16'.
I guess I will just have to wait and see.

good luck! What fish do you have in it? how many fish? how many gallons?
X-Evolutionist - August 16, 2005 04:28 PM (GMT)
I think they are all comet goldfish. I'm not sure how many there are. There are a lot of babies!

I've had many goldfish born and grow up in my pond since 1997. Each year, a smaller percentage survive because the overall population of fish increases as does their size and other predators. This year, I hope to have more fry survive since I lost ~20 goldfish last year to a heron and a mystery illess that killed at least 13 of them. The fewer adult fish and other predators that you have, the more fry will survive. The more plant cover that there is, the more fry that survive.

I guess that makes sense.
We've had some grown fish disappear and we have no idea what happened. We had twelve small to medium comets and now we are down to seven. We are in a residential neighborhood and I've never seen a duck/heron/egret in my yard. We have a birdbath as part of our waterfall and we see a lot of birds there, but none big enough to grab a fish and fly away.
We have dragonfly nymphs. Can they eat fish?
Robyn - August 16, 2005 06:24 PM (GMT)
Yes, dragonfly larvae/nymphs/naiads will eat goldfish fry. Your larger fish could have been taken by any number of predators.

i just got a small batch of rosy reds but i hpoe they dont get eaten by a dragon fly.
X-Evolutionist - August 16, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
I'm bummed that larvae can eat fish. I really like dragonflies.
Bummer!

I have goldfish babies in my pond. For over a week. They are in the creek between the two ponds. Do you feed them? I have probably 20 give or take a few of different types. Never heard of babies before. HELP! Linda
Tommy - August 20, 2005 12:24 PM (GMT)
yes you should try to crunch up the food you give your normal fish, or they will eat algae in the pond.
Robyn - August 21, 2005 01:51 AM (GMT)
The fry may be able to eat things in the stream area. Be sure to move them into a pond in the fall as they can't stay in the stream forever.
Tommy - August 21, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
a pond may be better for them to live in as they dont have to swim against a current because they are so young.
