Title: Ick Problems
Celynny - August 19, 2005 09:25 PM (GMT)
Some of the fish developed Ick. I got them ick treatment and put it in, but now the water is cloudy and gross. There's nothing I can do to get the silly water clear.
I did a 25% water change, scrubbed down my filter, and gravel vac'd. Nothing seems to be working. Any advice?
My second question is this; how do you know when ick has finally cleared up; is it when all the white spots are gone? Or do the white spots linger around a bit as they heal. Just curious how many more treatments I need to give the fishies' tank.

on the bottle it should say how long the treatment should be. the white spots should be gone when ich is over. do you have carbon in the filter? carbon absorbs the medication so i would take it out.

We had taken the fluffy filter bit out of the Biowheel filter and just let the biowheel run. All night, just incase the medication would get caught in the grains inside the fluffy filter.
Either way, the tank has had 5 hours of running solid, after the aforementioned cleaning, water change and etc, and its still smoggy and unclear.
Any recommendations? I hate seeing my fishies unhappy :(
Edit: The bottle says one treatment is normally enough, but if it persists to use another dose the next day with a 25% water change. Thats why I asked, because it doesn't say its cured when the spots are gone, it just says 'if it persists'. Sometimes illnesses leave scars for a little bit, thats why I asked.

they may not be 100% gone but you should continue to use the medication for 2 more days after there are no more spots.

Guppies are notorious for bringing ich into tanks. Do you have guppies? When I get them I quarantine them four at least a couple days before I put them in. I was also told that using gravel from another tank or not using new gravel & cleaning the tank well if it was 2nd-hand or if it sat without fish in tit for awhile that ich could show up as well. I hate ich. I hope it gets under control soon. Sounds like you love your fish. I know I love mine. Good luck.

What size tank was this? Water may go murky after certain medications are used. Sometimes, water changes (up to 50% is probably fine), etc. will help. Other times, you just have to patient. If the cloudiness is due to the medication, activated carbon can help clear it up. You would only want to do that when the treatment is finished. If it's due to bacteria multiplying in the water, the addition of good bacteria to the filter may help. Short term, something like AccuClear can clump cloudy water and clear it up but it will return if the source isn't fixed.
You should continue to treat for ick until all the white spots are gone. Those are live colonies of ick parasites. Ick can be treated with medications and also raising the water temperature and using aquarium salt. I wouldn't trust a medication that says a single dose is enough. It is probably something very nasty. Also, ick has a life cycle that lasts a week or more depending on temperature. At certain stages in its life (I think when it's on the fish as opposed to free living after birth or something when it is vulnerable), it is not affected at all by medication so the parasite killing chemicals have to be there for a full cycle of the ick's life.
Years ago, I had a tank of guppies that got ick.

We got guppies from a certain pet store & they ALWAYS ended up w/ich. So now we get them elsewhere but the males seem to die rather quickly.
