my pond has a disese going around. it has black spots on the fish and we have lost 3 orfe, and 3-5 rosy reds. now my 10 inch koi looks really bad and i have been medicating them for 2 days already. most of the fish seem okay but some like the koi im worried about. how do i cure this? ive been using something that gets rid of parasited and fungus. Help!

i took my koi to the pond store and he looked fine. they think that someone plant killer around the pond and it got into the pond while it rained. the fish dont have black spots on them, one koi was just had spots on i didnt notice.

I hope you can figure out the problem. If you think it was herbicide poisoning, I would do a water change and add activated carbon to the filter. Let people around know to not use pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizers near the pond.

i found out the problem! there is a piece of treated wood and mulch right next to the pond under the fence. when it rained the chemicals must have gotten in the pond. i removed it and that will never happen again. i lost like 4 rosy reds, 3 orfe, and my largest koi is in quarintine, he is in bad shape. all the other fish are fine, they are schooloing and eating again and i have like 5 frogs!

OK ignore my suggestion in the other thread then... I should read posts in a different order or something. hehe

Anyway, how long was the treated wood there? My pond is next to a shed (3 feet or so away) and even though the shed is sitting on block, the base is made of treated wood. It's been there since early summer and the pond and it's in habitants are unaffected by it.

In any case, I always do a 30% water change once I know the rain will be away for a few days if the pond flooded (I get very little runoff into the pond if it does not flood, I set it up with higher edges than the surrounding ground level). Besides the possible chemicals that may have entered the pond, it helps clear the water up faster and rebalance the pH (acid rain makes my pH drop from 8-ish to 6 with more than an inch of rain). I still need to post a pic of the pond somewhere that isn't in nightshot mode. :P

the treated wood was there before the pond, i was going to take it out anyway but didnt see it as a probelm. when it rained the chemicals went inot the pond and killed all my orfes :( . all the fish are fine now.

i need help with my largest koi. he was the one that was hit the worst and was the one twitching. he is in a 10 gallon tub with an airetor. he is breathing normally but is resting on the bottom alot. he swims around sometimes but why is he still acting like this? all the others are fine, i put new water in for him and treated it so i think he may get better. anything else i could do?

all my orfe have died :( . i am buying 4-5 more and hope they dont die. they were fine and fat before the pond got the chemicals from the wood in it but they all died. my pond is 100% safe now and chrystal clear!

I'm sorry that the orfe didn't make it. They are the most sensitive and alerted you to the problem. Be sure to run some fresh activated carbon through your pond filters to remove any remaining chemicals from the wood (some woods are treated with arsenic which is of course very deadly). Arsenic poisoning (if that's what it was) is not really reversable. You can only make the water clean and safe now and hope the koi can recover from any brain damage.

i dont think it has brain damage. hes was hit the hardest out of all the goldfish and koi. im doing the best i can to keep him alive. he is doing much better today then yesterday. now i have to see if he will eat. hes very chubby so he can go for a while with out food. i just really hope i can get him back in the pond. all the other fish are 110%. they are eating and everything.
