Title: Feeding Newly Hatched Tadpoles
Description: When do they get hungry and feed?

Hiya Everyone! I am very new here..this is my first post and my first experience with tadpoles.
I discovered eggs in my pond 10 days ago, and began surfing the web immediately for info. When I found this site, I looked no further---there is a wealth of information contained here, and it has been invaluable! I now know that my eggs are amphibian, and most likely green frog tadpoles. After reading Robyn's Frog and Toad Information Page, especially re: 'Raising Green Frogs from Eggs to Adults', I went out and bought a small starter aquarium, set it up, and brought some of the eggs in. That was around Day 5...I started keeping a diary to help me remember, so I will re-check to make sure. But, they stayed motionless and flattened out as Robin had stated, so I know I'm on the right track. Over the last 48 hours, they have slowly begun changing form...they now have the vaguest appearance of actual tadpoles, but they are STILL just hanging onto whatever is nearby, with no attempts to swim, feed, or move about, unless the water is disturbed (by me, when I needed to prove they were actually living beings) and then they simply regroup and go back to hanging on to the sides of the aquarium. I dropped a couple Rice Krispies into the tank (human kids ate all our cheerios) but they are not interested. So I guess my big question at the moment is....
"How long will it be before these little guys need a meal?"

I don't want to pollute their water, but wouldn't want anyone to go hungry around here, either.
I have also been checking my pond, and it seems that the rest of the eggs/tadpoles who remained are doing the same as these guys who moved inside. It's good to have comparisons, I think, cuz this way I know that so far I am not making fatal mistakes!

You're right that you don't want to overfeed as the resultant pollution can really harm them. How big is your aquarium? Can you add an air stone or a sponge filter to move the water a little? That will help with water quality and get the tadpoles a little more active. At first, they will feed by sucking algae and small life off of surfaces. You can bring in some rocks, etc. from your pond and put those in the tank. Once they are actively feeding, they can be trained to eat most fish foods, Cheerios, etc. That may take a week or two. I've not tried Rice Krispies but tend to think they're not a great choice. Every few days depending on your tank size and amount of tadpoles, you should change out about half the water and put in some pond water. Not only will this reduce any ammonia spikes but also add pond microlife on which they can feed. Do not worry if the water is a little green with algae; that's good for them. It shouldn't be cloudy/hazy though.

The (3 gallon, I think) aquarium kit came with a pump, filter, tubing, valve, etc., but I decided to buy a small air stone to use for now, to avoid the whole tadpoles-sucked-into-the-filter thing. Hubby even attached the filter valve to it so the bubbles are nice and gentle. And the water I filled the tank with came directly from my pond...slight green tint, but very clear.

[[ At first, they will feed by sucking algae and small life off of surfaces. ]]

Maybe that's why they are hanging on the sides. I used a small pond stone to hold the tubing/air stone down...maybe I could switch stones every few days to bring in a fresh food source once they start feeding regularly? Thanks again, Robyn!

i thought frogs only breed in the spring?

Karen - August 31, 2005 12:51 AM (GMT)
On Robyn's Frog & Toad Information Page, green frogs are listed as breeding from April to September, so these guys are right in the middle there. All summer long they were singing up a storm...they only quieted down right around the time I noticed the eggs, so I guess they are finished for this season.
Nice to meet ya, Tommy :)

welcome to fishpondinfo karen. i to have 4 young green frogs, they seem to take care of themselves.

Sounds like a plan.

My green frogs are still hanging out in the tub ponds as if to be interested in breeding but I haven't seen any new eggs for about a month.
