Description: What should I do?

Robyn - September 5, 2005 12:04 AM (GMT)
As my site ages, I get more e-mails and mentions complaining about various things on my site. The problem is, I have no time! Just to keep up with additions I get via e-mail and keeping records of my animals takes all the time I can spare. I am almost to the point where I'll have to give up answering e-mails altogether for lack of time. People say my site needs to be redone. Do they really know how much time that would require? I have 253 separate pages with information. Some of those are 20 pages long. All within those pages there are links back and forth to other pages. To change one thing creates a domino effect and requires patches on dozens of pages. I really wish I had the time to read and update my pages but I don't. So, this is more out of curiousity as to what you think is worst about my site. I look forward to your comments.

Robyn your site is huge! i love your site alot. maybe you can update some things once and a while and take some more pics. i think if people want to ask ?s, answer them hear, you should take your email addresse off your site if you want.

Tommy - September 5, 2005 12:37 AM (GMT)
Robyn, would you mind taken some new pics of your tanks, shrimp and fish? i would love to see some new pics of those.

Well clearly, there are things you can do to update the site - thats not in question. A site is never "finished". I like to think of them like an old vehicle or piece of old furniture... they get better with age, but need polishing now and again.

That said, I feel bad for you because I know you have hardly any time to do additional things to your Web site. My site, though not exactly "huge", was large enough to where I felt the burden of updating it - frankly, I dreaded those long days since free time wasn't easy to come by.

I would recommend you find someone who is good with the design of Web sites, someone you can trust not to screw things up, and have them make slight changes to the graphics/overall design of the Web site. As long as you keep a backup of all pages, you need not worry if they should delete something because you would have another copy. Just my suggestion! :D

good point :D . yes, i feel bad too. it is an excellant site and maybe you cab find some things hear and there to update each week, if you can find the time.

It would be nice is someone could help with with my site. I don't know anyone who is qualified who will do it for free. That's the problem. People charge huge amounts for tiny sites let alone one my size. I write all the code myself. If someone puts it into fancier scripts, I would be lost.

Tommy - September 6, 2005 01:19 PM (GMT)
well, there is no urgent need to update or anything. just do it when you want to or free time.

Robyn - September 6, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Free time? What's that?

Tommy - September 6, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
lol  .

if you wanted to invest in a program... you could get Frontpage. you wouldnt actually have to code much, you just use the interface to put things how you want them and it automatically does the HTML code for you.

sounds good.

Robyn, I liked your site a lot from the first time I found it because it has so much information. OK, some of the colors make a few parts hard to read, some of the photos are blurry, and some pages are longer than web designers say to shoot for, but it works, and the cross linking really is fabulous. I voted "its fine", but that doesn't mean I think you shouldn't change things as time and interest allows. I just don't think you have to -- it is already a great site, and popular too. If you do decide to play around with the colors, consider switching to a separate cascading style sheet file. Then you only have to do all that work once, and you can change colors again later with ease.

Tommy - September 9, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
yes, some pics are a bit blurry.

Robyn - September 9, 2005 04:48 PM (GMT)
Hey, a photographer, I am not! I know I have some bad photos in there. In some cases, those were scanned regular photos before we had a digital camera. In other cases, the photos are attempted close-ups. With the cameras I have/had, that was what I got. It is really hard to photograph moving fish as well. I figured something in the way of a photo of whatever it was was better than nothing. Once someone offered to come take high quality digital photos of my ponds, etc. but they then never got back to me. They intended to sell them and may not have even let me use any.

Tommy - September 9, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
yah, nobody can take a pic of danios!

KenF - September 11, 2005 07:15 PM (GMT)
Yes, it is very hard to take pictures of fish, especially in ponds! They keep moving, so you need autofocus, but then the autofocus always seems to want to focus on the surface of the water, or some reflection. Ack! When I wanted some pictures of our fish I got all obsessed and ended up taking hundreds of digital shots, and every once in a while I got lucky. But even with hundreds of shots I ended up with only a few that I felt OK about posting to our web site. Not worth the trouble (unless you kind of enjoy getting obsessed about things -- guilty!) Anyway, I hope my main point that I think Robyn's web site is Wonderful came through more than my regretful comment about a few pictures here and there being blurry. :(

Nice pics Ken.

Robyn - September 11, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
Want to come take some photos of my fish? ;)
I have a few good photos in my bunches too. All summer, my pond is plant covered so the good pond photos are all winter shots which is also when the fish sit still!

Tommy - September 11, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
my plant multiplication seemed to have died down. instead of being in the 90s its the 80s. fall is coming. :(

Robyn, this site is awesome!!! You have given me so much information. My pond just became a reality the end of March of this year. I appreciate you so much!!! You don't need to change a thing, in my opinion. Thank you for all of your hard work. I wish I had your talent.

Tommy - September 12, 2005 07:21 PM (GMT)
Some things need updates though.

Billy - September 16, 2005 08:33 PM (GMT)
naw, I think its okay. though i would suggest doing a spell check and take some new pics.

Tommy - September 16, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
spelling doesnt matter that much unless you cant understand it.

Robyn - September 18, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
I am a stickler for good spelling and grammar. If you've seen spelling errors, let me know. I do a spell check automatically as I type. As far as photos go, I do try to take new ones. It does take time to process them though. It just took me half a hour to process and put up 8 new photos of my baby chicky Speckles. The ponds and aquariums don't change that much. Plus, my aquarium photos as mentioned aren't very good.
