Title: Stocking A Pond
Mike - September 8, 2005 01:26 AM (GMT)
yes hello i live in Northern New Jersey and have this pond in my yard that is 2 acres. The pond I think does not have any fish in it. Was wondering on what fish would be good to put in it and how much? Also any other info that would help. Thanks

is the pond 2 acres or is your yard 2 acres? is it a natural pond or manmade by someone who lived there before you. what kind of wildlife have you seen around the pond. heron would probably indicate the presence of fish.

The pond is two acres, and is a natural pond. I have seen dear, turtles, and some beavers some times.

what species would work in a pond that is 2 acres?

I would stick to native species. Keep in mind that the introduction of fish will reduce the populations of amphibians, insects, etc. For a pond that size, most people add game fish like sunfish and bass. If you want better populations of amphibians, smaller native fish like minnows, dace, etc. are less apt to eat eggs and larvae. My page on native fish is at

Are there any books or websites that give information on stocking fish?

i would expect there to be fish in the pond already. i also think that they will establish a stable population in the pond on their own. if its there, they will find it and populate it. if anything you could go fishing in other nearby bodies of water and put what you catch in yours.

i wouldnt stock it with koi and stuff. maybe some native species depending where you live.

yeah i am not i am just wondering on what type of species, I know large mouth bass, catfish and sunfish work. But are there any others. I don't think smallmouths would do well. Would they?

im not sure if channel catfish or bull heads are native to NJ. Where would you get bass from, catch them?
Mike - September 8, 2005 11:32 PM (GMT)
a hatchery, and i know bullheads are native, not sure about channels though.
Tommy - September 9, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
i would do the bullheads, not channels. they get huge.

There's a Zett's Fishery. They don't have a web site (I don't think). Their phone number is 304-229-3654 to get a free catalog. They have most of the fish that you mentioned.
I'm sure there are web sites and probably books on stocking farm/big ponds. I don't know of any off hand though. My farm pond page is at

that sounds cool to have a pond with native species.
