Title: Can You Help Me With My Fish?
Charlotte - September 10, 2005 11:03 AM (GMT)
Hi there
Last night unfortunatlly my fish died 9th sept 2005
I came home from school and he was laid on the gravel and he wasnt breathing and i still dont no how he died
He was a goldfish and he was still a baby! :(
This is how it started
Well where having our house rewired and theres alot of noise
when i came home from school on the 5th sept i realised that he wasnt swimming around he was under his bridge what looked like he was sleeping. i woke up in the morning and realised that he was still in the same position and hadnt moved any way i told my dad and he told me that he was proberly just really tired but at this moment i new something was bothering him so i lifted the bridge up gently and my fish swam away. so we figured out that he must of been stuck! so i went to school and when i came back he was laid on the gravel so i left him for a while came back just before i went to bed and he was still there! the next day i fed him and cleaned out his tank and put him back in! he still wasnt happy he just swam back down to the gravel so at this moment i new he was deafently ill or really upset so i went on the internet and looked on google about fish care it said that fish get really stressed and upset when they hear alot of noise so they hide. the next morning i fed him and he was laid at the corner of his tank! and he didnt touch his food or move so i checked to see if i was still breathing and he was so that day i was really worried about him allday and when i came home my dad told me i should go check on him because he really doesnt look well and when i went up to him in my room he was dead! still in the same place at the corner of the tank and the food hadnt been touched! so i left him for a while and then burried him!! im still upset now but really confused about how he died!!! he was completly fine until when the house was rewired and all the noise started maybe it was because he was too stressed! i dont no! nobody does. and he didnt have white spots or anything but the one thing i did notice was that when the noise started from that day his top fin was all ways clamped to his body and thats when i new something was wrong! please if you have any ideas how he may of died or what i might of done wrong then please tell me because im buying a new fish when all the noise has gone and i dont want the same thing happening to him!!! thanks

I agree with Jessica. your fish might've gotten stressed to death. the same thing happened to my dojo loach. I came home from school, and it was dead. :(

it sounds like it was stressed. what type of goldfish was it? was the tank to small? was it a feeder goldfish?

I am sorry to hear about your baby.
Unless the noise was extreme, it shouldn't have killed the fish. What kinds of noises were they making? If it drove you nuts, then it certainly could have gone through the water.
How big is the tank? How big was the fish? How long had you have the fish? How often and how much water changes did you do? What are you feeding? What kind of filtration and aeration do you have? Did you test the pH, ammonia, or nitrite lately? General lethary and clamped fins as you described can be the result of many problems: stress, poor water quality, parasites, bacteria, funguses, etc. Just because you didn't see any obvious spots on the fish doesn't mean something wasn't attacking him. Before getting new fish, I would disinfect the tank and all things with dilute bleach. See
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/fcare2.htm#tear for how to do that.

this is a dumb idea but something could have happened to the tank while you were at school. Maybe while the people were working something went into the tank.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. You must have been very attached to your fish. They can be wonderful de-stressers. I know how you feel. Water is a good conductor of sound & vibration. All the suggestion from everyone are very good suggestions & they are all pretty knowledgable. It is not unheard of for feeder goldfish to pass away early...they aren't very hardy. If it was a fancy I would be more surprised. I hope you get a new fish & that it works out for you. I have 4 aquariums going now & am soon adding #5. Everyone at this forum is a fish lover or lover of some water animal. Again I'm deeply sorry for your loss. It hurts to lose a fish (some people think it's silly but I don't) when you get so attached...it's easy to get attached.

Its a living thing, it should be treated as if your dog died or something.
