Title: Strange Egglike Trail From Hitchhiking Snail
Description: what is this?
Brad - September 15, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
I brought home a zooanthid today and hidden in among it was a small (1/2 long) white spiral snail of some sort. Immediately upon insertion of the zooanthid into the tank the snail began to let loose a long stream of hundreds of veeeeeeeeery small circular brownish/whitish objects. So tiny as to almost be invisible, but clearly roundish. I did not know that snails could release eggs in a spawnilike nature. I thought they only laid masses on surfaces.
Are these snail eggs? There are now about what look like a good 500 in the tank.

Thanks for any insight.

This forum is freshwater, not many of us know about this kind of stuff.

I've never had any marine animals. As far as I know, marine snails do lay jelly masses on surfaces just like freshwater aquatic snails. Could the things coming out be waste? Sorry, I don't know.

My son's ramshorn is laying eggs like mad. I keep taking them out as his tank is very small & I already have 5 tanks going. I don't need anymore babies w/the paradise fish babies as it is. I wouldn't know anything about saltwater snails. Good luck with that .

Sounds like zooanthid is a plant?

I don't know about marine, but have been studying snails in general and it soundsa lot like the gathering of food they sometimes do. They have a gland that secretes a fluid to hold it all together and some times it just washes off of mine. Or it could also be waste. The pic would not come up so I'm guessing.
