Title: Guinea Pig
Description: about the bordom buster

Alyssa - September 21, 2005 02:27 AM (GMT)
I just got another guinea pig after mine resently passed away. I have always got my guinea pigs in the past locally but this time bought from a pet store... where I have learned now that the animals have not been played with until they are bought.
My Question: On your Guinea pig page you say Fritz has a guinea pig "bordom Buster" since my cavy is having difficulties with being by him-self and not comfortable being with me yet I was wondering where you got the "bordom buster" ?? Or if you have any other recommendations seeing as I believe the sudden change to being with me has also made him not eat anything other than lettece for 3days.
sorry if my questions are to long.

it doesnt have to a manufactured product to help him during this time. wheels and time in a ball will give him something to do. even if he is nervous it may help to just hold him in your lap with the lights dim and cover his eyes with your hands. no noise or interuptions during this will help. this will let him now that you are not trying to eat him which is what his insticts are telling him. treats to bribe him into liking you also help. you can start by just placing one in his line of sight andd removing your hand. next keep your hand in the tank but not close. you can gradually stay closer as long as he still takes it. have you offered other fresh veggies? this could help. sometimes putting his food bowl in his hide will keep him more comfortable while he eats. a low traffic area in the house will minimize constant stress.

Here is the Boredom Buster (not sold at a store I have used but the only one I could find quickly just to show what it is):

I think I got mine at the local Petco.

My pigs don't really play with it. What they like is basically foods! The Busy Bunny baskets are especially fun for them to chew. They're sold at http://www.busybunny.com which also has a lot of guinea pig toys you might try.

Guinea pigs will NOT run on a wheel. They should also not be put into those balls. They may not move, may be scared, or could even hurt themselves. Guinea pigs really have no interest in exercise!

As far as foods go, lettuce should be used sparingly (and never iceburg). I feed mine pellets, hay, carrots, kale, a grape a day, a tiny piece of broccoli, and sometimes other things like apples, parsley, carrot tops, etc.

i agree that most g-pigs dont like wheels/balls, but i have had some use them and seemed to like them.

I've not tried a wheel before with my piggies. I've read it wasn't a good idea, and they wouldn't use it. Just so you don't think I'm spinning in a wheel, here are some links to back me up:

http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/guineapigs/a/gpscages.htm
"Wheels are somewhat controversial; many experts beleive that guinea pig bodies are not designed for this kind of exercise and the risk of injury is to great. Try to provide exercise using other means. "

http://www.sphynxncavies.com/HairlessCaviesCare.html (hum, hairless piggies!)
"DO NOT give your guinea pigs any exercise wheels or exercise balls as they are a major health hazard."

And more.

i agree, most g-pigs dont like wheels/balls, but i have tried a ball with some and a couple used it and seemed to enjoy it. i wouldnt use any wheel, only a solid floored plastic(not wire with open holes). but you are right, in general it isnt really a g-pig thing.

Even the animals that do like to run on wheels (hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils, hedgehogs, etc.) should have wheels with solid flooring and not holes or wire. Luckily, many such wheels are now available. Years ago, I had dwarf Siberian hamsters, and their wheel was plastic with grates/holes. The poor things used to get kind of stuck in the holes.

that is the best thing about the new solid plastic ones. the old wire ones would get feet caught by even the best hamster runners. and they do have the solid plastic ones available in sizes large enough for guinea pigs, at least some brands do. so that shouldnt be a problem either, if they like it that is.
