Title: African Clawed Frog Problem
Description: (a lump that keeps geting bigger...)
Flusher - September 24, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
I've had two ACFs for several months. They have grown and are doing very well, except that my albino has a lump on its back that seems to be getting bigger and bigger. I'm pretty sure it was there when I bought the frog, but it was only noticeable after it ate. The lump is now much larger (so is the frog), but it still pops out most promonently after a feeding.
Any help figuring out what the problem is, or how to treat it, would be great. I'll gladly provide more info to help. I know I didn't offer much here, but I'm not sure what is pertinent. This is a new problem for me. Thanks.

a photo would really help. other than that the only thing i can think of is they usually have a bulge on each side that looks like a little air or other buoyant material under the skin, they are on each side but kind of bulge upward and may be more noticable after eating.

Hopefully it's just a benign tumor of some sort. If it grows really fast, it might be cancer. I don't know much about the various types of tumors that an ACF might get. The lump might be bacterial in nature in which case it would pop or leach at some point. I don't know if they get viral tumors like fish. The lump might also be a deformity if he's always had it. So, I guess I'm no help!
You only mentioned one lump but if there are two symmetrically, then as ReptileGuy said, it could be normal.

All my frogs have two symmetrical lumps. The one frog has a bump on the right side above the symmetrical lump. It sure doesn't look normal.
If it is bacterial, will it be a serious issue if/when it pops or leaches?

my frogs had 2 bumps on it, it was fine its whole life. This sounds different though.

the safest thing to do is take it to a vet. he will be able to diagnose it, and prescribe correct mediaction or treatment.

thats a good idea. You may not want to just because its a cheap frog and it may be expensive going to the vet but remember its a living thing.

I've never seen a frog with such a bump so I can't say if it is bacterial and if it is, if it would pop and create problems. My guess would be that it would stay confined within the frog. If it ruptures, then that could release bad bacteria into the water if that's what the frog has. These are all guesses though.
