I have a mainecoon who's name is "Max", he has been sick for about a year now....i ahev brought him to the vet so many times i cant even count. The vet to is at a standstill about Max's health...we have done tons of tests and stil no answers. it 1st started with shortness of breath while playing threw the house, then, a runny nose, now those still do exist, but he also has been going poo on the floor RIGHT next to the CLEAN litter box, throwing up after eating and in between. earler today he was laying on the bed, and got up to throw up and jumped on the floor, nothing cam up but a little fluid, and then he couldnt keep his balance and I had to catch him from falling. he still has a appitate, and is drinking water, but about 30 minutes later he will throw it all up. I had brought him into the vet everyday for a month to get a shot of Meds(cant remember the name of it) that didnt work, and then he was on 3 different ones after that, nothing has worked and like i said, the vet cant figure it out...can u help us? PLZ
I am so very sorry your kitty is sick. My cat Tootsy looked like a Maine Coon. He had diabetes and kidney failure and many events of vomiting, diarrhea, and crises. What tests were done? Did they do a full blood panel? Were any of the values off at all? I suggest going to another vet for a second opinion. Here are some things that come to mind that need to be ruled out. I am not suggesting any of these are what's wrong but just rule them out. These are only what come to mind at this moment. I am certainly not a vet.
Shortness of breath - asthma, heart problems (murmurs, etc.), lung problems
Runny nose - virus, allergies
Not using the litter pan - digestive or urinary problems, behavioral problems (not used to it, other cats being a problem, etc.), dimentia
Vomiting - almost anthing including irritable bowel syndrome, hair balls, allergies, diabetes, stomach ulcers, panic disorders (mental), illnesses of most kinds
Dizziness - viruses, brain problems (tumors, etc.), stroke, ear problems (balance), dehydration (common with repetitive vomiting)
My cat Tootsy who as I said was diabetic and in kidney failure had trouble keeping things down. He was put on prednisone which helped a lot. Has Max tried that? Be sure to have a full blood panel and urinalysis done on Max to rule out obvious things. Be sure they include glucose, BUN, creatinine, liver enzymes, T4 value, and white blood cell counts in both urine and blood. I'm not going to bother to tell you what they all mean right now but I've had animals with bad values in all those areas at one time or another.
Max should be getting subcutaneous fluids as long as he keeps throwing up. This involves sticking a needle in his back to put in lactated ringers solution. It can sound intimidating at first but I've done it hundreds of times now on 3 cats, 1 dog, 3 rabbits, and even a hedgehog (that was fun!). The fluids can really perk up a sick animal.
Anyway, my main advice is to get another opinion. I've had a vet throw up their hands on an animal (mostly rabbits) so I took them to another vet. Sometimes they give up to so I continue with therapy as best I can. What medicines was Max on? Does he have diarrhea too? If not, that's a plus. What do you feed Max? Anyway, I could ask questions all day but I hope I've given you some ideas. Best of luck to you both.
