What is the best product to use if your going on vacation for a week?

Nothing. Vacation food blocks don't leave much food at all, and they can cloud (and foul) up the water leaving you with a bigger mess than ever before. Most grown fish can go a week without food. I wouldn't extend the trip longer than one week though, not without food. Just do a water change before the trip, and relax for a week! :D

I agree. Fish can fast for a week if they have to. You might toss in some freshwater live foods that would stick around for fish that eat them. Blackworms come to mind. Put in a bunch would work for many situations as most hide and the fish can slowly find and eat them over time. For fish that eat plants, more live plants can be added. I suggest a water change right before you leave and as soon as you return. More fish die from bad water than starvation.

Personally, I do not do weekly water changes as I do not need to. In my home aquariums which get bi-weekly water changes, I have about 15ppm nitrates. But I agree with you in regards to doing a water change right before you leave. Clean water before the trip is indeed the key to healthy fish.

...and now I must get ready for work! :)

What about automatic fish food feeders?

I have never tried them, but they seem like a workable concept. I believe they feed up to seven days.

I have seen some made for 10 days. But as said, it's just not needed for adult (healthy) fish. If one were to feel more comfortable with an auto feeder, its certainly understandable. I dont use them though. ;)

ok but what about fry. I have 5 Fry and two guppies will have more in a week or so? What should I do with them??

Robyn - June 24, 2004 03:34 PM (GMT)
Are they all guppy fry? If so, then the addition of live plants will help a lot to ensure they get enough food around. If they are fry from eggs, then few will survive without being away from adults and fed regularly. Putting in a ton of live plants and algae will allow fry to survive on their own and feed themselves. It's much harder to leave fry behind without feeding them in small aquariums. Those of us with ponds can toss some in a tub pond with plants and no fish, and they can grow on their own. In sterile tanks though, fry foods must be added a few times a day. My fry care page is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/breed.htm

they are guppies.

I have now

6 one month olds and 9 two week olds. all guppies!

In that case, they're probably be ok as, for fry, they're pretty big. Try putting in some live plants for them to hide in. They can also pick things off of the plants to eat.
