arent jaguars the more aggresive cichlids? anything else in the tank?

reptileguy2727 - November 11, 2005 03:00 PM (GMT)
jaguars are extremely aggressive. and no, he wont let me put anything in his tank. i tried to add pirhanas and let them settle in before they were exposed to him, so i put in a tank divider. well he busted through the tank divider and killed both, they were about 3-4". even when he was 4" or so he killed everything. he goes after me when he sees me in the room, and he has actually drawn blood on me when i was re-arranging his tank once.

Tommy - November 11, 2005 03:07 PM (GMT)
wow thats pretty aggresive. pirahhanas seem only aggresive when in schools, in tanks with some cichlids they are weak!

reptileguy2727 - November 11, 2005 03:52 PM (GMT)
definitely weak cowards when in a new tank with a huge jag trying to kill them.

Tommy - November 11, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
In my lfs there are 2 pirahhanas in a 50 gallon and they added a piar of convicts :o ! the pirahhans were in the corner and getting attacked if they moved, they were seperated the same day. they are only a threat in a school.

reptileguy2727 - November 11, 2005 05:34 PM (GMT)
i think even in schools they arent as bad as many people think. they showed underwater footage of wild school. they dropped a dead chicken in the water. they lookd at it. one went in for a bite. nothing bad happened, so then they swarmed it. i wouldnt be surprised if a decent cichlid could woop a whole school into submission. actually i would be surprised of a cichlid couldnt, depending on the size of the school, tank, and pirhanas.

Tommy - November 11, 2005 05:53 PM (GMT)
I dont think most pirahannas eat meat all the time. I dont know why they are so over exagurated. maybe hollywood or something.

Robyn - November 11, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
I grew up watching the 70's B movies, Piranha 1, 2, etc. I thought they were so funny.

Tommy - November 11, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
ive seen some things on pirahannas on shows where caymans and anocondas are thye main attraction. they say pirahhans kill caymans!they didnt in the show, i guess maybe they wer more peaceful pirahhans.

reptileguy2727 - November 11, 2005 07:05 PM (GMT)
they definitely are made for meat. and i have seen footage of them taking down baby caiman. but i dont think they have a chance on a HEALTHY adult or even sub-adult.

Tommy - November 11, 2005 07:07 PM (GMT)
i think if its a large enough school and there hungry they have a chance, IF they go for the belly area. Reptileguy can you post pics of all your tanks? ide like to see what you got.

reptileguy2727 - November 11, 2005 07:20 PM (GMT)
actually that is most of them. i am down to a lot less than i used to have. i redid the rat tanks today though. here is the old setup, new is about the same except different rats is each. other pics are too big file size to load yet, until i figure out how to minimize file size. other rat cage is a 1 foot by 2 foot wire cage.

reptileguy2727 - November 12, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
mine: short 20long with leo, pacman, 55 w/ jag, small rat cage, 55 rat tank, 40breeder w/ turtles, betta vase w/ bamboo.

as that a bucket in the middle? are those all fake plants?

reptileguy2727 - November 16, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
bucket? no, red slate leaned up against the glass. all my plants are always fake, those seem to be the ones that live longer for me. i had it set up really nice, he decided to pile all the plants in that one part.

Tommy - November 16, 2005 11:24 PM (GMT)
ohh, i see. thats pretty cool how he piled up all the plants. does he hide in there?

reptileguy2727 - November 16, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
yeah, not in it but next to it, like he wants to be able rush out and chase me away.

Tommy - November 17, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
i guess in the wild they would ambush prey with something like that.

reptileguy2727 - November 18, 2005 02:24 AM (GMT)
good point.

Tommy - November 18, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
