Title: Apple Snail Reproduction
Description: how often do they lay eggs

Renee - November 17, 2005 11:41 PM (GMT)
I have added an apple snail to my vivarium a few months ago. Three weeks ago it started laying eggs. She has laid a batch of eggs on Friday 11/4, Satuday 11/12 and again today Thursday 11/17. I thought that apple snails would lay eggs less often in the fall and winter, but this seems like a lot. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?
She lives in a 40 gallon vivarium. She shares her space with 4 fire belly toads, and a male and female betta. The humidity is 75-80%, water temp 74 degrees and air temp is 70-74 degrees.
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks
Renee

Whats a vivarium? isnt it half water, half land? im sorry i cant help you <_< .

it may be fall outside, but at 74 your snail may not know that. yes a vivarium, or viquarium as i like to call it, is part land and part water. many animals when kept inside will not maintain behavior or physiology as if they were outside. your bettas do okay together? he doesnt injure her since she isnt always ready to breed?

my vivarium is part water and part land, I have made it myself. It is about 1/3 water and 2/3 land. The water is about 7 gallons, creating a nice pool for the frogs to swim in. the betta are fine. there is plenty of plants to hide in so the female can get some peace and quite. It took several tries to find a plant that the snail would not devour quickly; destroying the betta's hidding spots.
Are you suggesting I lower or raise the water temp.? I could do this but it would require adding a heat source for the frogs, which is an option if needed.

Thank you for your responses

im not really suggesting anything, it sounds like the snail has no idea it is fall and it is just laying eggs a lot. i would remove the eggs, dont want them to rot and foul up the tank. what types of frogs? any baby bettas yet?

You need to keep it warm for the toads and bettas. The snail as others have said doesn't know it's fall since it's warm in there. Normally, a female apple snail will lay a few clutches in quick succession as you have found and then stop for a while. She may then lay more clutches a few weeks or months later. If you don't have another apple snail (a male), the eggs are not fertile so just remove them. See http://www.applesnail.net for more on apple snails.

I always say frogs and I am sorry for that, I have 4 fire belly toads I dont know if they are male or female.
I will remove the eggs, I dont want to them to rot.
As for the bettas no babies yet, I thought I may have something a few weeks ago because the male had begun blowing clusters of bubbles but nothing came of it. It is not my intention to breed anything, but any pleasant supprises are welcome.

thanks again for your help.
