Title: Dinosaur Eel
Description: determining gender
Caroline - November 26, 2005 02:44 PM (GMT)
I have a baby dinosaur eel. It's really cute. Does anyone know how to tell if its a male or a female? Is it possible to tell when it's still a baby? Please give me some advice if anyone knows. thanks!

heres a whole thread about them. it also tells how to sex.
http://s2.invisionfree.com/Fishpondinfo/in...topic=1162&st=0 They are also known as sengal bichirs. what size tank do you have it in? any tankmates?
Caroline - November 26, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
Thanks!!
My tank is a 20 gal tank. Yes my eel has other roomates but there isn't any other donsaur eels yet. The other fish in my tank are:
threee minnows, an angelfish, a tetra, this other eel-like fish, and a few others.

are you upgrading? that tank will be a DISASTER if you kept it in there. The bichir should be in a 55 at least when its an adult, they generally dont get along with other bichirs, and need carefully selected tankmates.
Caroline - November 26, 2005 03:08 PM (GMT)
I hope I can upgrade. For the time being my bichir seems to get along with other fish pretty well. It doesn't bother other fish and no fish bothers it also. I hope to get a bigger tank sometime. Thanks for the info!! The bichir even has a friend I think, that unknown-species-fish.
~Caroline~ :P
Tommy - November 26, 2005 03:10 PM (GMT)
i think that species could be some type of eel, ropefish, or a violet goby. if you upgrade you reall shouldnt but tetras, minnows and other things it can eat with it. the angel may be fine.
reptileguy2727 - November 26, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
if you can post pics of the unknown inhabitant(s) i will be surprised if i cant tell you what it is.
Tommy - November 26, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
it sounds like a dojo loach, im going to the petstores now and i will see if they have anything like what you described
Caroline - November 26, 2005 04:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks for all the info anyone.

My bichir likes to hang around, floating, next to the thermometer because of the heat. It must feel good!

reptileguy2727 - November 26, 2005 06:01 PM (GMT)
did you mean heater? what is the tmap in the water?
wildlife1023 - November 26, 2005 06:02 PM (GMT)
oh yeah sorry I meant heater of course.
Caroline~~ :D
Tommy - November 26, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
whats the temp? reptileguy, do you know the growth rate of these guys?
wildlife1023 - November 26, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
the temp in my aquarium is usually around 72-80 degrees.
~Caroline~ ;)
Tommy - November 26, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
thats a jump. i would maintain it better, maybe 78-80.
wildlife1023 - November 26, 2005 09:43 PM (GMT)
78-80? OK thanks. It won't affect the other fish in a bad way would it?
~Caroline~ ;)
Tommy - November 26, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
to maintain the heat i need to ask some questions about your settup. do you have a hood? how big is the tank? how many watts is the heater? what fish species do you have?
wildlife1023 - November 26, 2005 09:58 PM (GMT)
78-80? okay thanks for the info. Thats really helpful. It wont affect other fish badly though right?
~Caroline~

can you answer these so i can help you maintain a good temp?
wildlife1023 - November 26, 2005 10:31 PM (GMT)
oh sorry something messed up. I have a hood, the tank is thirty gallons, and i'll measure it with a ruler tomorrow. The species are:
angelfish, minnows, bichir, dojo eel, tetra, and a few others
~Caroline~ :D
Tommy - November 27, 2005 01:19 AM (GMT)
http://s2.invisionfree.com/Fishpondinfo/in...opic=1162&st=45thats the sexing link, i wouldnt breed them, really hard, thats why they are alot of money. can you answer all the questions? if you measure it i can tell you the proper gallons(not exact). Determining the tank size will help with the heater watts angelfish, minnows, bichir, dojo loach, tetra, and a few others. What others? can you please be more specific so we can help you? You should have more tetras but the bichir will eat them anyway, you should get a 55 when the bichir is around6-8 inches.
reptileguy2727 - November 27, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
get a more accurate heater, that will keep it more stable. that may be why the one tetra has fungus.
Tommy - November 27, 2005 01:55 AM (GMT)
it could be that she has a 30 gallon with a 100 watt heater, she will probably have to get a new one.
wildlife1023 - November 28, 2005 10:03 PM (GMT)
Okay thanks. I'll try to find out how many watts is my heater for the tank tonight and get to you this week tomorrow hopefully. Thanks for all the help. The other two fish I got a while ago I forget what type they are I dont have many fish though. i have to go to the petstore to see what type they are, they arent big and they have one stripe.

Tommy - November 28, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
i think your tank is a 20 gallon, can you post a pic of the new fish, find out what ity is or show us a pic of another one online?
wildlife1023 - November 28, 2005 11:40 PM (GMT)
oh a 20 gallon? thanks. oops I thought it was a 30 before whoopsie. Oh well. Yes I'll try to find a link on google images soon.
~Caroline~ ;)
Tommy - November 29, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)
im not sure actually, i cant tell you exactly but its less than a 30 gallon.
wildlife1023 - November 29, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
Okay. Robyn calculated it the old-fashioned way and she said it was about 16 gallons. I never knew that whoops. Thanks. I'm sending to pics to Robyn by e-mail, one of the bichir and one of the dojo. I hope they are good enough. I was wondering if anyone knew how to tell the gender of the dojo also.
~Caroline~ :)
Tommy - November 29, 2005 09:37 PM (GMT)
here is loachesonline, it may tell you how.

wildlife1023 - November 29, 2005 10:47 PM (GMT)
cool thanks. I'll look at it.

wildlife1023 - November 29, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
OH! I just read the link you recommmended to sex a bichir, so the male has a wider anal fin right. Umm do you know how wide it would be if it was a baby, three-four inches long?
~caroline~
thanks!!
Tommy - November 29, 2005 11:36 PM (GMT)
when you post a pic reptileguy will tell you, i cant really tell becuase i never really needed to sex them so i really dont know if its as male or a female unless i compare them.
wildlife1023 - November 30, 2005 12:28 AM (GMT)
okay. If i e-mail Robyn the pic, will she post it up on this post, or where?
~Caroline~
Tommy - November 30, 2005 01:30 AM (GMT)
you will have to ask her. she has made new threads for them in the past, dont worry, we will see it.
wildlife1023 - November 30, 2005 09:45 PM (GMT)
Okay, cool. By the way I dont have time to find a photo album this week, maybe next. I'll just e-mail her the pic of my bichir this time.
~Caroline~ B)
Tommy - November 30, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
you said before you were on her for an hour everyday, and you dont have time to join an album? no need for pics if reptileguy said he cant sex it becuase its too small.
wildlife1023 - December 2, 2005 10:54 PM (GMT)
Okay thanks. Oh I have to do other things online too. I have to finish some work also for things. Sometimes I have less time.
~Caroline~ :D
Tommy - December 2, 2005 10:57 PM (GMT)
im just saying that if your on hear for an hour, you should be thinking about joining a photoalbum so Robyn doesnt have to post your pics hear.
wildlife1023 - December 3, 2005 02:31 AM (GMT)
Yah I see. Thats a good idea. I usually now have only an hour on the weekends, Im getting so busy. If I have any time I'll fnid a photo album so Robyn doesnt have too much work. :)
~Caroline~ :D
Tommy - December 3, 2005 03:42 PM (GMT)
that should help robyn, thank you.
