Title: Trip To National Aquarium In Washington Dc
reptileguy2727 - November 28, 2005 03:30 PM (GMT)
pretty good, especially for $5 a person compared to over $20 a person at the baltimore aquarium. while me and gynmonkey were moving all his tank around yesterday (110g, 45g reef, 55g) we went to the aquarium in DC. it was pretty good, lots of things wrong in our eyes though. like "neon" tetras that were actually cardinals. turtles with tanks too small and had horrible shells. HUGE jaguar cichlid. he was about 3" wide, 8" tall, and about 18" long! he had hole in the head around his eyes though. nice axolotls though (salamander that stays larval its whole life). huge african lungfish. any questions just ask. and yes we moved all those tanks and built the stand for them yesterday. it all went well except for 2 tetras that sucked into the pond pump we used to put the water back in the tanks.

i forgot, 10-12" common snapper as well. that was really cool to see since he looked almost exactly like a larger version of mine, it was like looking at mine through a magnifying glass. a lot of adult snappers look very little like younger individuals, and although this one still has some growing to do, i was surprised that he looked so much like mine.

I hope to go there someday. My parents went a few years ago but I had to go to work. The new Australian exhibit opens next month at the Baltimore aquarium. Do you live in MD?
reptileguy2727 - November 28, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
northern VA, same with gynmonkey. we are plannign to go to the baltimore one over the winter break in our school schedules. are you near baltimore? closer to DC? the day the australia one opens admission is cheaper, but its probably going to be so packed i dont even consider that an option.

Opening day will be a mad house. I'm about 15 miles from Baltimore City and 50 miles from DC.

maybe you, me, and gynmonkey can coordinate a trip to the baltimore aquarium. that would be cool. you are a lab technician/chemical scientist, right?

did you take any pics? i would love to see some pics of the australi exhibit if you go, do you have any dc pics?
reptileguy2727 - November 29, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
nope, no pics of the DC one, im not a very picture taking tourist kind of person. i should have though.
Tommy - November 29, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
was there any saltwater tanks? i asked for pics to see a reef or something but i guess not. some aquariums do pretty good jobs! is this australia exibit fresh or salt?
reptileguy2727 - November 29, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
australia exhibit is at the baltimore aquarium and not open to the public yet. half the tanks at the DC one were salt, but one or two were reef, and to me they all look the same. i asked a girl who works at the baltimore one, she doesnt know if it is fresh, salt or both.
Tommy - November 29, 2005 01:33 AM (GMT)
whats she working there for then? . anyway, theres a really nice, huge reef at this aquarium ive been to, dont remember which one.
Robyn - November 29, 2005 04:50 PM (GMT)
I think most of the tanks at the Australia exhibit are freshwater, at least the ones I saw on tv. I don't know how much they're doing as far as setting up Australian reefs and such.
When we've taken photos in the aquarium before, they didn't turn out well. It's really dark in there except for the rain forest room. Anything with glass (tanks) often reflects a flash or fails to focus.
I'm an analytical chemist, a little bit more than a lab tech. I tell them what to do (and they get mad).

when we finish with the expansion of the tortoise pin I will post the before and after pictures. Yea the aquarium was pretty good. The shark tank was probably the best part.
reptileguy2727 - November 30, 2005 03:53 AM (GMT)
not for me, it was the huge jaguar cichlid and common snapper.
Tommy - November 30, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
they had a jaguar cichlid with a snapper/ that must have been cool!
reptileguy2727 - December 1, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
no, they were pretty good about staying geographically correct. the jaguar was with a huge arowana, some leporinus, and a messed up silver dollar type fish. the snapper was in with bluegills.
Tommy - December 1, 2005 02:50 AM (GMT)
they had a big amoazon aquarium at my this aquarium i went oo, pretty cool. it had pacus, messed up silver dollar things like your, male and female silver arrowana, a red tailed cat, a prehistoric cat, and a fire stingray. they were all fullgrown.
