Title: Help! Paradise Fish Dying!
Val - December 19, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
Pari is nose down in his tank this morning. I removed as many fry as I could & am doing a complete water change. Is it his swim bladder? I see no signs of outward trauma. Someone please help me!

I wish I could help. I'm not sure what's wrong. Doing a partial water change is a good idea, maybe 50%. A 100% water change is very stressful unless you knew poisoning was the problem. Paradise fish usually have good swim bladders. For it to come on suddenly is more likely to be physical trauma or perhaps an illness but I don't know why because your fish have been so healthy lately. Maybe he's burnt out from all the nest tending. Did you check the ammonia levels? I hope he recovers!

He's still doing it after a 50% water change & Evie is trying to literally push him to the top for air. She won't leave his side. She even got under him a coiple times & lifted him to the top w/her body & is trying to make him chase her to keep him moving. Thisis sort of intense. She has a very strong connection to him. I netted all the fry I could find into the 10-gallon nursery tank. All the levels in my water are fine. I'll just keep an eye on him. I've had him since April. I wonder how old he was when I got him. He wasn't very big (a couple inches at the least). He may be ok. I'll just monitor him today.

sorry val, hope he gets better. eve seems like a good mate for pari.

It's been 12 hours & I've done a 50% water change. treated the tank for fungus & used Melafix. He's still wanting to try & swim but he keeps "nose-diving" on the bottom of the tank. He looks a little bloated too. I noticed some fungus on his pectoral fins so I used some Jungle brand Fungus-Clear. The Melafix says to use for 7 days & then do a 25% water change. I hope he makes it. Evie is still coddling him & prodding him to the top. The psychology of these fish is amazing. They really do seem to have a strong union to each other & the fry. the fungicide has turned the tank green. Very Christmasy. Keeping my fingers crossed for him & praying (I'm pathetic).

I hope the treatments work. I've never heard a tale where a fish expressed such concern for another as Eve seems to for Pari.

Me either. She is watching him like a hawk & it seems like when she thinks he needs to go to the top she nudges & pushes him. He's looking a tad better this morning. He's not straight up-&-down like he was yesterday. He's breathing a little bette & more diagonal that vertical. I hope it all wprks too. Becasue of their seemingly close union it would bite if he died.

He seems to be better this morning, he's upright like he should be. However he is still lying at the bottom of the tank & she's still prodding him to the top when she thinks he neds to get air. I wonder if putting an airstone in there would help. Any thoughts on that? His breathing looks a little more normal & it looks like the white stuff on his fins is going away. His eyes don't look ckoudy anymore either.l I'm using the Melafix religiously.

Pari died this sfternoon. I'm very heartbroken. My best friend of 23 yrs went out & buoght me a new male so Eve wouldn't be lonely becasue she obviously had a close bond w/Pari. Candy was afraid she'd die from a broken heart. I have him in a 2 gal quarantine tank while I am treating the hex. I did a 50% water change & restarted treatment w/Melafix just to be on the safe side. Eve can see Adam from where she is & she seems very excited. I wasn't ready for a new male but Candy felt it was necessary for Eve. What a good friend.

I'm sorry to hear about Pari. I hope things go well with Adam and Eve.
Tommy - December 23, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
Sorry about pari, hope maybe adam is a more succelful breeder.
Paradise2 - December 23, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
Adam seems to be doing well. I'm still grieving for Pari though. Adam is half Evie's size. She chased him some but has calmed down & is acutlaly coddling him. Geesh she's weird.
Tommy - December 23, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
i guess this may be a love hate relationship or maybe eve is juts defending territory or something.
Paradise2 - December 23, 2005 09:26 PM (GMT)
I think that she's just not used to something half her size in the tank & she knows it's not her original mate. Like I said...the way these fish think just baffles me sometimes. She's doing really well with him now though.
Tim - December 27, 2005 05:37 AM (GMT)
sorry to hear that val. hope adam is as good to you as pari
Paradise2 - December 27, 2005 04:29 PM (GMT)
Adam's doing great. He's even getting Eve in the submission stance. It's rather funny as he's half her size. He's establishing his rank lol.
