Title: Help! I Am A Foster Tree Frog Mother!

Frog Lodge - January 6, 2006 04:02 PM (GMT)
I believe I have a gray tree frog who came indoors with my tropical plants for the winter. I live in North Georgia. It is gray with a dark star on its back and has made no sound at all. I found it in a staghorn fern that went into the guest bathroom (with many other plants) and I thought it was hibernating so I periodically misted it to keep it from drying out. Now it is moving around, mostly plant-to-plant but is looking skinny so I need to feed it but I don't know what it eats!

Twice in the past few weeks I have founs it on the toilet seat but fortunately not in the bowl. Needless to say, noone is allowed to use that bathroom because I don't want any chemicals (or flushes) in there until the frog goes back outside.

How can I help it survive the winter? That bathroom is so warm that I'm afraid it would be cruel to put him outside now since I found him in the fern in early November.

Thank you for any help :)

You want to wait until it's almost as warm outside as it is inside so there's not a temperature shock. Gray tree frogs, if that's what he is or even if he's another sort of tree frog, eat live insects, worms, and arachnids. Most houses have small bugs living in them so he may find enough to eat on his own. He certainly would at my bug-infested house but others use poisons or lots of cleaning to keep the house bug-free. You can offer him small crickets, mealworms, earthworms, or wingless fruitflies. Those are all sold at most pet or aquarium stores.

is there a bathtub in that bathroom? if so you could put some crickets in there with food and water-gel and they shouldnt be able to get out (no guarantees though) that way he can go and get them when he wants to. close the drain though (as if you filled the tub with water) that way the crickets cant go down the drain, or him for that matter, same with any other drains and cracks. if he gets out of that bathroom that may cause other problems for you and him.

THANK YOU for the great advice! I got some critters for the frog -- no crickets though, too loud -- I hope he eats soon!!!
