Title: Dissapearing Shrimp

Kostic - January 18, 2006 08:15 PM (GMT)
I have 3 kissing gouramis, one pleco, one small catfish, two red tipped barbs, one 3 spot gourami. My wife keeps buying ghost shrimp for some reason (since you really can't see them and they don't do much, I couldn't care less) and then they dissapear. Is it possible that one of the fish that I listed could be eating them?

the kissing gourami's and the pleco are probably eating them, they are sold as feeders and many fish do eat them. there are proably some in there and you just dont see them.

My 14" pleco didn't eat the ghost shrimp I had, at least not noticeably as I had a breeding population. Gouramis will absolutely eat the ghost shrimp and possible torment the death the larger ones. What is the "small catfish?" Some catfish are predatory. If you have one of those kinds, it would also eat shrimp. I don't know about the red-tipped barbs. How big are they?

Ghost shrimp will also eat each other! An individual ghost shrimp only lives a year or two and many at the store are already near the end of their lives as well. Any shrimp that die will definitely be eaten by the fish if given enough time.

They also arent very long lived from what i have read. i think its probably the gouramis.

I can not seem to find out what kind of a catfish I have. I have been all over the internet and nothing looks like mine. I will have to go back by the store and find out.

do you have a description or a pic of the mystery catfish you could post?

No picture of him, unfortunately. Anytime he sees me getting close to the tank he hides. I will put a new topic in the fish section with a description to see if anyone can help.
