Title: Newts And Fish
Description: Newt as prey

Paul Monroe - February 5, 2006 06:43 AM (GMT)
I have electric yellow cichlids, they are quite agressive i think they've been eating my California Newt (Taricha torosa)'s tail, either them ir my Ornate Bichir Eel... Im not sure who will die, if they will stop, or how to stop it... Any advice would be helpful. Reply to (culegye20@hotmail.com) 2-3-06

take the newt out. they are poisonous and any harassing by tankmates will cause them to release some toxin onto their skin where whoever is the harasser will be poisoned, but in a fish tank that can mean everyone will suffer.

I agree, the newt REALLY shouldnt be with a bichir and a mbuna.

As they said, newts should be in tanks without fish. I hope you can make another setup.

Bichirs and mbunas are very different. Bichirs are omnivores with a large proportion of meat in thier diet. Mbunas are herbivores (with the exception of the genychromis species). Therefore one or the other will die soon. The bichir is probably the newt eater.
