Paradise Fish Kid - February 9, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
holy cow well...holy fish is more like it my largest fry ate crushed flake food and a bit of crushed shrimp pellets i have another large one but a tiny bit smaller i named them phil and lil should i start feeding them flake food since they ate it phil was chasing his fry siblings around im not sure if he was trying to eat them or let them know he is king in that giant tank they call home .... the tinier fry i think tried to eat it but it was too big i crushed it with my fingers maybe i should make it more powder like.some of the fry though are still very tiny but these two are looking like fish only transparent i will put some photos if they come out clearly in a bit chiao-------DaNnY
Paradise Fish Kid - February 9, 2006 04:20 AM (GMT)

NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 9, 2006 10:31 AM (GMT)
No offense mate but I'd dather keep Paradse fry business with Vals...
Paradise2 - February 9, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
Danny many petstores sell some stuff called Had-a-Snail. It's a treatment that kills the snails but supposedly not anything else. However if you have a big snail that you wanna save forget it. Also depending on what kind of snail it is they breed like mad & they don't need a mate to doi it...they're hermaphrodites. Ask someone who knows more about it but it's a thought.
Robyn - February 9, 2006 04:13 PM (GMT)
I won't use Had-a-Snail. The copper can harm more sensitive fish and kills invertebrates. Not all snails are hermaphrodites but the common "pest" ones are. Trapdoor snails and apple snails are both sexual meaning they're either male or female.
Liquifry is the liquid egg yolk stuff. I guess that's what you have? You don't need to refrigerate it. You would think you would need to though. I can't find it for sale anymore.
If the largest fry are eating crushed flake, you can feed some of that but also feed the fry foods for the smaller ones and to help the fish transition from baby to more adult foods. It's a gradual process.
Paradise Fish Kid - February 9, 2006 10:35 PM (GMT)
i have no idea now where to post anyway i see that the brine shrimp have hatched and are swimming how do i feed them to the fry??? ;) it seems a bit difficult on top of that the tank is large so will the brine shrimp just get lost and die ?? or will the fish find them????? so many questions so little time i have some pictures i will put up in a bit guys one came out really good it just takes patience and a whole lot of it :D
Paradise Fish Kid - February 9, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
Im still trying to upload the best picture that came out here are some of the bigger ones though

here we go i hope it works

Paradise Fish Kid - February 9, 2006 10:47 PM (GMT)
this is the biggest fry i have so far next to a smaller fry
Paradise2 - February 10, 2006 03:02 PM (GMT)
Never used Had-a-Snail, just seen it. Ramshorns are heraphrodites. Geez can they lay eggs!!! The egg masses look like snot. Ewww. Thanx for clearing that up Robyn...I figured they were all herms. I guess I'll learn to keep my mouth shut unless I know what I'm talking about eh?
Great pics Danny! Those are some intense close-ups.
Y'all have a great day!
Paradise Fish Kid - February 10, 2006 04:43 PM (GMT)
i have my brine shrimp getting big how can i feed them to my fry ??? they might be too big to eat in a couple of days i used to have them and they would get the size of guppies well does any1 know how to do this ??? g2g to try to buy the tank hood b4 i go to work bye guys
Robyn - February 10, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
Most ramshorn snails are indeed quite prolific!
Paradise fish kid, to feed the babies with the newborn brine shrimp, you need to collect and rinse some. My brine shrimp hatchery has a dip cup that easily lets me pull up the baby shrimp but a brine shrimp net can also be used (sold at most fish stores). Then, I rinse the shrimp under the tap (I have well water, no chlorine but a little probably won't harm things) to remove most of the salt. That step is more important for smaller aquariums. I then put them into the tank. The shrimp will dance around and live for up to half a day in freshwater. If the fry don't find them in time, they fall to the bottom and rot. Depending on the size of the tank, size and number of fry, and how many shrimp you add, the fry should get most of them if done right.
Paradise Fish Kid - February 13, 2006 04:46 PM (GMT)
Thankls a bunch robyn after work ill try to make it to petsmart and get the brine shrimp net :)
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 14, 2006 04:50 AM (GMT)
Here's 3 different lots of fry in the one photo... The ones circled in white are the oldest Albino Peach fry, the one in blue is an Albino Peach Male Crossed with orange & blue Paradise Female, the one in red is the newest hatched fry which are only a few days old...

Mine are still happily feeding away on the Algae - this photo is a couple days old - the bigger fry have grown a lot since then... I have noticed their tails have become Paradise Fish tails now...
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 14, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
Some photo's I took tonight - I moved 4 of the oldest fry into a clear tank so I can take photo's... And DanG it - you still can't see their eyes in these photo's !!!.

I tried the 4 I moved with teeny weeny Betta pellets but still not interested, I guess as long as they're eating the tiny bugs in the Green Stuff then thats ok... I'll put some newly hatched blood worms in with them tomorrow & see how they go... Can't get frozen Daphnia around here...
BTW they fry are all going well - no deaths with the big guys - I'd notice right away with those & just the odd couple died with the newest ones altho I think thats fairly normal & definantly to be expected...
Danny - how many do you have left ???
Val - how are your guys going ???
Toodles
Paradise Fish Kid - February 15, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
hey guys!!!
ahh busy busy busy i need a vacation...
naughty fish--try taking pictures of the fry with a bright light but without the flash of the camera. i have quite a few fry about 20 but 2day i put brine shrimp in the tank and they turned into tiny sharks like JAWS the fry that is. they are about 3weeks and four days old now
I saw one eat about three and another was trying to gobble down a shrimp almost as big as him my betta tank was getting pretty green with algea so instead of pouring it down the drain i poured it into the fry tank hopefully that will stimulate a growth spur in the stuff i also placed some rocks that had algea in the tank to help grow more in it because the snails are really going at it those white worms i had b4 all gone. my biggest fry is getting big i saw a dead one today looks like his back was broken i think the larger ones were a little too hungry and took a nip at the little guy. well i wonder when would be good to feed them more shrimp ttyl guys....
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 15, 2006 10:22 AM (GMT)
The tank light is on & I didn't use the flash, mine are white coz they are Albino !!!. LOL !!!. I was just a bit annoyed because you can't see their eyes in those photo's... You'd think with the camera I have it'd be easy, it's an almost $600 camera - altho I'm probably not using it right or something
Good idea to put the Algae in with them & the rocks covered in it too - they'll enjoy that !!!.
My big ones are getting bigger each day, I think that growing is pretty much all they have to do now... The oldest ones are 46 days old ( or 6 weeks & 4 days... ) I keep thinking that I have to get them onto live foods but really thats what they are eating in the Algae...
Paradise2 - February 15, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
I use the light in the tank and my camera flash & I've been getting good clear pics. I took the Runt to my 4th grade inclusion class Monday & the kids are fighting over who's taking him/her home at the end of the year. I'll have 33 names to draw from. They're all doting on him/her. I included some info I found on the web about the plight of them in their natural habitat & their care & general info (name, water temp, etc.). I even wrote a letter in the fish's perspective about coming into their class & when Mr. Roush read it to the class he said you could hear a pin drop. It was so quiet lol. I was in awe becasue they have lots of boisterous boys in that class.
Tommy - February 24, 2006 02:52 PM (GMT)
Val, how are Pari's last batch doing? Hows Adam?
Paradise2 - February 24, 2006 02:57 PM (GMT)
I'm of the opinion that the toher thread is oversized & that I'm sick of looking at the bickering. I'm going to continue this thread Robyn. I like this idea.
My baby paradise fish (now almost 12 wks) are doing well. They're bluish gray w/black stripes. The one at work (Runt) is still small and has no stripes. I'm wondering how old they have to be to sex them. Thery're about 2 months now & I'm thinking of selling them but I wanna keep a female. I wonder if Runt is a female.
Adam isn't building a nest at the moment but that's ok. Eve seems to be reabsorbing her eggs properly when they don't spawn & that makes me very happy. They seem not to be very interested in each other lately. I had started leaving the tank lights on 24/7 & the nest building stopped. I'll start leaving the lights off during the day gain & see what happens.
The 3 fry I have here are about 1" long now. A student at school says he wants to ask his mom if he can buy all 3 of them. He's a very responsible type & his family & I get along very well. I think they'd be ina good home.
I have used Jodie's idea of green slime stuff (I just let it grow in the java moss) & it did actually seem to enhance the growth of my fry. It had taken the first fry that I sold a few months back twice the time to grow as big as these guys were a couple weeks ago & I do believe they go through growth spurts. I'm now feeding them freeze-dried bloodworms along w/the regular tropical flakes. They seem to like it.
Gotta get ready for work. Y'all have a great day!!
Paradise2 - February 25, 2006 12:37 PM (GMT)
Well Eve died yesterday. When I came home I found her nose-down in the tank. I netted her out, took him out, washed the tank & filetr & everything thoroughly, new gravel, put him back in. In the even that he would pull what Eve did when Pari died I went & got Adam a new female. I watched for a time as he chased her all over the place...as is typical w/nerw fish in an established tank. She's 1/3 his size. He's not as big as Pari was so that's small.
They seemed to be doing fine so we went to get me a new car. When we came home 4 hrs later he'd built a HUGE nest. I was rather shocked. She had also dramatically plumped up. He only stopped building long enough to chaser her & let her know he's the boss. Typical guy....lol.
This morning when I woke up he was still going great-guns on the nest (acting totally like Pari used to). Still chasing her around here & there but no serious nipping or anything. I need a name!!!!
I have 3 paradise fish babies for sale...all 12 wks old. Anyone here local?
I almost think Eve was still missing Pari & she wasn't very receptive to Adam. Maybe she just finally died of a broken heart...who knows. Maybe starting fresh is the key. Although she was about 4" & was so beautiful. She looked like a blue sky w/a touch of purple. I'll miss her & I know getting a new fish right away may seem cintrary to that but these fish need a mate after they've already had one. When Pari died was proof of that.
Y'all have a great day!
Tommy - February 25, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
Robyn - February 26, 2006 02:16 AM (GMT)
I'm so sorry to hear about Eve. We all got to know her from your postings.
My paradise fish don't ever seem to make a bubble nest. The surface of the water is covered in floating fern. My male (my fish aren't named alas) hangs below one spot (no sign of bubbles or eggs there though) which is also where I put in food. He chases his "wife" and daughter away if they come near. The females have darkened up and hide a lot of the time as a result. One (I think the daughter who I used to think was male but now pretty sure she's female) spent a week in the corner; I thought she was going to die but now seems okay. I'm glad their other offspring, a son, is in my 20 gallon tank where his dad wouldn't turn him into mince meat. My paradise fish are 3+ years old (except the "baby" who's over a year now) but only about 2" long. I don't know how you guys get such big ones!
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 26, 2006 07:29 AM (GMT)
Very sorry to hear about Eve as well, I think it's a great that you went & got another one, how long did you have Eve for ???
I'm going to put Robby in a tank of her own as soon as she lays this next batch of eggs, I'm worried she'll end up the next to depart if I don't... Merrick has been beating her up badly, actually yesterday I thought she was dead as she was in one corner of the tank for a very very long time, actually I think I will put Merrick back in with the juveniles & Robby can have their tank all to herself - that way she's right next to Merrick but he can't touch her - hee hee...
Well I gotta go, the kiddies are watching E.T for the first time & I have a long hard day ahead of me...
Don't worry about bickering at the other thread, I was just annoyed with Tommy for being abrupt etc, I should have just ignored it or sent him a personal message... I wasn't meaning to bicker just think it's good to be open to suggestion because no one ever really knows everything...
One of my large fry was dead this afternoon when I came home from camping, he was tangled in the green slime, was a bit disappointed as he was the largest one I think... Anyway so I trimmed the green slime up so it's not in huge big clumps so no other fry get tangled the same way...
Anyways over & out : ) : )
PS: Once again, sorry about Evie, I'm glad you have some really nice photo's & fry to remember her by...
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 26, 2006 11:13 AM (GMT)
YAY - my biggest fry didn't die, it was the 2nd biggest... Here's a photo of him today...

I hope it's not blurry
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 26, 2006 11:16 AM (GMT)
OMG I don't belive it - you can see his eye !!!!!!
NauGhtY Fish : ) - February 26, 2006 11:19 AM (GMT)
OMG & he's doing a pooh !!!
Paradise2 - February 27, 2006 02:34 PM (GMT)
Thank you all for your condolences for Eve. I had her since last June. I miss her terribly.
Well I got the new girl (no name yet) Friday & immediately Adam built a nest. He worked on it for a couple days & it was huge. Yesterday after church I noticed eggs in the tank. Adam's being a very good father. This female is also helping tend the nest like Eve did. He killed the Chinese algae eater yesterday. My husband saw what happened. He said the Chi was at the top of the tank hanging out & Adam just went up & threw him out of the water very violently & then the Chi floated to the bottom & quivered & died. I told Alan that maybe Adam thought he was a threat to the nest. Male paradise in my experience have VERY high paternal instincts where their nests are concerned. I'd never seen even Pari do something like that though :o Maybe Adam's testosterone was up because of his first successful spawn. I've documented it according to Alan's description of the event. We'll see what happens if I put another one in after the fry are netted out.
The new girl is about 1/3 Adam's size & he's about 1/2 Pari's size. So she's tiny.
Robyn qas far as our fry getting so big I thiink in my case it's the Oregon water lol. I'll send you some :P I have to sell the other 3 babies so I can put the new fry into the nursery tank!!! Anyone local? BTW good fry pic Jodie...we could tell he was doing a pooh

Thanx Tim..I've decided on Asia htough. Also we have fry popping out of their eggs this morning. I gotta get the nursery tank cleaned out!!!
My coworker is taking the remaining 3 from Pari & Eve's last brood so I know they'll go to a good home...she's a fishaholic too. She has a pond & 6 tanks at home. They'll have their own 2 gallon until they're big enough to put w/other fish.
Y'all have a super day!
Val
Paradise Fish Kid - February 28, 2006 03:07 PM (GMT)
hey guys... how is everyone ?? sorry about eve val ...i did think of a name for your fish i think you already named it though what about heaven backwards which would be nevaeh??? well ttyl everybody :P
Paradise2 - March 1, 2006 12:20 AM (GMT)
Wow what a cool name...nevaeh...trying tot type it will be alot of fun lol. I like it...Nevaeh it is :)
Paradise Fish Kid - March 1, 2006 02:42 AM (GMT)
:P im glad you like it this is a picture of my largest fry which i can call fish now

well got to feed them now later guys
Paradise2 - March 1, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Beautiful pic. That's what mine look like. How old are yours? I just sold the last 2 to my coworker. She is so excited. I also printed some info from the internet to give to her so she wouldn;t be going into it blind. I actually printed off Robyn's Paradise Fish Page lol...She said, "Wow...6 pages!?" I think RObyn has some very good info & that's what turned me onto this place to start with.
I've put Nevaeh in the lower tank where I had the fry & Adam is still in the top tank w/the fry for a couple more days. Then instead of moving the fry this time I'm gonna move him. I haven't gone that route yet. We'll see what happens. These fry are all white & very small soi they may not make it. Plus Nevaeh is super tiny.
It's been my experience that when they hatch white (w/the exception of albinos) they don't live past a few days. When they hatch black they seem much healthier & live longer. Even though I've lost way too many fry it's been fun experimenting w/the different broods & whatnot.
I gotta run & get everyone ready for school/work. It's 5:20 am here. Have a great day everyone!
Val
PS. Alan says that Nevaeh sounds Hebrew lol. Well.....ok!
NauGhtY Fish : ) - March 2, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
My biggest ones look like that as well except they are white !!!. Navaeh definantly sounds Hebrew !!!.
Talk to you's all soon...
Meeeeeeeeeeeee
Paradise2 - March 2, 2006 03:16 PM (GMT)
Well it looks like some of the fry have turned black. This is a good sign. I can;t tell right off how many I have but I guestimeate over 100. There's gonna be a mortality rate. Especially since Adam was letting the nest disintegrate last night
I got him out & put him in the 10-gallon w/Nevaeh. He's restless. This is their first spawn so I think things'll be a bit weird the first few times. I started the fry on Hikari First Bites (1/2 tsp mixed w/2 oz water) this morning. I gave them 3cc w/a medicine syringe. My other fry got big fast on it & I have some algae in the 7-gallon so they can feed off that as well.
Runt (the fish at school) is doing good. The kids in the 4th grade inclusion class are still fighting over who's taking him/her home at the end of the year. Shelley says the others are doing great & she can't wait to see what the sexes are. Today is her birthday so I'm giving her back her money in a card because I wanna make the fish a gift.
Robyn...how old was your little girl when you were able to tell her gender?
Gotta run...talk to y'all later & have a great day!
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!!! We're having Green Eggs and Ham for a snack at school this morning & an all-day all-school pajama party! Fun :D
Robyn - March 2, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
Val, my "baby girl" is 2.5 years old, and I'm still not positive she's a girl! A year ago, I was leaning towards the baby being male maybe but now think female. I'm basing this not on colors but the length of the dorsal fin as it goes back and also the anal fin. I know for sure my first two were a pair since I got babies. I also know the newest "baby" is 10-months-old and definitely male. Looking at my site, it seems I thought the first "baby" was female at two-months-old. So, sexing should be possible by 3 to 6 months for sure. It seems the variety of paradise fish I have is so much smaller and has fewer sex differences than the ones you have.
