Title: Neon Tetra Got Eaten By His Buddies
Description: Fish trouble

hey guys, I got 6 Neons and a few other fish in my 10 gal. I'm pretty sure the neons were healthy, I didn't watch them for three days, by the time I wanted to change water, I found out that one neon is missing and there's a bit of redish thing on the bottom which other fish were chewing on. So...what should I do? Do I need to disinfect the tank or something? It's so gross.....I dont' know what to do now...suggestions thanks.......dono how he died?

how long have the neons been in there? how long has the tank been setup? the other neons didnt kill him, but all the fish will scavenge off of a dead body. you should also cheak all your water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp, hardness, etc). if they are new they may have just been stressed from the move. neons arent very hardy and they need high quality water in a relatively mature tank. what other fish are in there exactly? what exact type of filter do you have in there?

What other fish are in there? Do the fish show any signs of illness? The neon could have died from any number of things, and then the fish will eat him post mortem. Just remove the body. You don't need to disinfect anything. Be sure to check your tank's pH, ammonia, and nitrite to be sure the water quality is okay and look out for signs of illness or other problems.

Thanks guys. They're ok now. There are 3 Gournamis, 5 Neons , 2 gold rams and 2 bottom eaters. Only that one fish died and got eaten. Maybe he was too little...

I think the tank might be a lil over crowded...but the guy in the pet store told me to get those...

Sounded a bit overcrowded to me too. I'm glad all your other fish are doing well. Sometimes the guy at the petstore doesn't have clue. In this case the fish just might have been sick when you got it or too small/weak. There could be any number of explanatiions.

I've learned that the people in this forum are pretty knowledgeable (a few work in petstores AND tell the truth) & not to buy anything w/o their input. Most petstore guys are out to make a sale. That's why I go with a local fish supplier who has a 3-day guarantee instead of the traditional 14-day....he's more confident in his fish. At least that's been my experience. Most in here will tell you to steer clear of Walmart...their fish supplier stinks. Been there done that. They're ok for getting supplies I guess but I'll never but fish from them again.

Have a good day!

Val
