Title: Frog Found In Pond

I found 2 frogs in my skimmer box yesterday. 1 was smaller, dark brown/black, and the other was fairly large and green. The smaller one was moving around, but the other one wasn't. Is there anyway to tell if it is dead or not? It didn't respond to me touching it at all, but otherwise it looked and felt normal (not discolored, stiff or rotting).

It's sometimes hard to tell because during the winter, live frogs become discolored. Once dead, the tongue often hangs out which is a dead giveaway. But, that doesn't always happen. In those cases, you have to assume the frog is alive until you notice decomposition (skin coming off, etc.). Most frogs do respond to touch even in winter. I found a small frog in my pond last week and picked it up. It was upside down which often happens when they're dead. I thought it was but then it slowly stretched a leg. I put it back. It's better to assume they're alive if you don't know. You can put them in one place in the pond and check back to see if they're still there or not. If they don't move for a day or two, that usually means they're gone. By then, decomposition should be obvious as well. I assume your frogs are alive. Good luck with them!
