HI, IM HOPING SOMEONE CAN HELP ME
MY DAUGHTER CAME ACROSS A PAINTED TURTLE ON WED4/12 IN OUR YARD EXPECT DOGS GOT TO IT FIRST,I DIDNT THINK IT WAS ALIVE BUT AFTER PUTTING IT IN SOME WATER AND GIVING SOME SPACE HE STARTED MOVING, HE IS NOW IN OUR 10GALLON TANK WITH A ROCK AND MINI FILTER, IVE BEEN TRYING TO FEED HIM MOSTLY TURTLE FOOD TRIED DOG FOOD TO NO AVAI,,HE IS A MALE PAINTED TURTLE BETWEEN 2/3 INWIDE AND 4/5 INLONG NO VISIBLE INJURYS OR OPEN WOUNDS NO CRACKED SHELL BUT OUTER RIM SHELL BROKE OFF ABOVE BACK LT LEG AND ABOVE FRWD RT LEG BUT OTHER THAN THAT IS ALERT, ACTIVE. WE ARE NOT SURE WHERE TO RETURN HIM WE HAVE A RIVER ABOUT 10MTE WALK DOWN OUR YARD AND A MARSH ACROSS STREET BUT MARSH IS BEING BUILT ON (POSSIBLY WHY HE MOVED)OR BECAME LOST FROM OUR RIVER...LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER TO WHAT I SHOULD DO FOR HIM PLEASE EMAIL DIRECT ANGIE1368@WEBTV.NET OR PLEASE CALL (219)962/5743 LOOKING FOR A HAPPY ENDING FOR THIS SWEET GUY
PS WOULDNT MIND KEEPING HIM IF IT WAS IN HIS BEST INTEREST
If he has any injuries at all, I suggest trying to find a wildlife rehabilitator or your local reptile club or rescue so he can get help. If he seems okay, then release him nearby near some water. I wouldn't pick the area where they're destroying the wetlands. That makes me ill. They bulldozed some wetlands here this year with old growth trees. All I could think of was the turtles being ground up by machines. If there is no good habitat in your area any more, try to find a reptile group who can take him or advise you if you want to try to keep him. It takes a lot of time, money, and effort to take care of a turtle. Contrary to what some people believe, they are not no or low maintenace pets. Laws vary state to state as to whether taking him would be legal or not. If you tell me your general area, I can try to find rehabilitators and/or reptile clubs/rescue in your area.
