Title: Crayfish In Garden Ponds

NJbiology - April 26, 2006 02:47 AM (GMT)
Hey Robyn,

I'm back; I did not build that pond last year, but am in the process right now: 33 x 22 Pond - 8,500 gallons, with an entrance and exit stream; pond and (2) streams surrounded by a lined marsh-garden strip all around.

So, I'm feeling better and back to the forum.

My question for you concerns crayfish:

Do you think that I could have a few crayfish in my pond, since it's not very small - because I don't think that they would eat too many plants? I don't care if they eat fish or frogs, as there will be enough.

1. Would they eat lily tubers?

2. Would they, primarily, only eat softer vegetation, like algea?

3. Could they pierce the 45 mil liner with their pinchers, as full maturity?

I would think that they would be nice to have, as they look interesting and keep down the snail populations, and provide natural predation for an excess number of tadpoles and minnows.

Look foward to speaking/posting,

Steven

I don't know all that much about crayfish. They will eat small animals and plants. I don't think they'd eat lily tubers (buried anyway) but they may eat some algae. I doubt they'd puncture the liner. If you add crayfish, let us know how it goes!
