Good Morning,
My problem is that about 3 weeks ago we started hearing what sounded like extremely loud crickets. I found out that it was caused by frogs. at first we considered this a nice addition but it has continuosly gotten louder to the point where I cannot leave my windows open and sitting on the deck is out of the question.
Is this a permanent problem or just a mating call in the spring? Can the frogs overpopulate the area? What can be done?
This pond was manmade in 2004 as a water retention area. The pond has not been stocked but there are some fish in it.
"Build it and they will come." Ponds should be built away from bedroom windows. The loud "cricket"-sounding frogs are probably spring peepers or perhaps other species of tree frog. The gray tree frogs are just starting here. They're very loud but often not in large groups like the spring peepers which sound like crickets. They will stop when breeding season is over. The peepers have finished here. It will not last. I hope you can live with it until then. The more fish your pond has, the less likely frogs are to breed in it because they're smart and know the fish would eat their babies. My ponds only attracted tree frogs the first year or so when the fish were tiny. The tree frogs now prefer the pool cover, right next to my father's bedroom window! But, he lives with it. It doesn't seem to bother him. We're used to sounds here. Outside my window are my two roosters. I just sleep through most crowing. You can get used to most sounds over time.
