Title: Dawn Redwood Tree: Good For Acidic Mulch?

NJbiology - May 14, 2006 02:58 AM (GMT)
Hi Robyn,

I may be planting a dawn redwood tree (metaseqoia glypt.); it's a non-native decidous conifer. It smells faithly like a typical conifer, but not very strongly.

Do you believe that this tree produces acidic needle leaves - or leaves which, like white pine needs, are good for garden applications for acid loving plants?

Secondly, can you recommend a northeastern native pine/conifer, etc. that would not get wider then 30 feet or less and not taller then 50 feet? Other then a yew, holly, or other scrubs - preferably a pyrimid shaped tree in the pine/conifer/related family.

Thanks.

I really don't know much about redwoods. If I had to guess, I would guess their needles are acidic.

As for conifers up to 50 feet high or so, some of the firs and spruces would work. I'm not sure on the actual heights of the various conifers though. Check out a tree book or on-line tree information.
