Title: Gold Fish
Description: injured gold fish

I have a gold fish pond in my back yard. I noticed today that one of our fish has an injured eye. Well actually it looks like one of it's eyes is missing. We've had the same fish in our pond for eight years. Any suggestions on what may have caused this or how to take care of the injury?

Eyes can come out from various physical injuries mostly such as getting cut on a rock, another fish sucking the eye out, a predator damaging the fish, getting stuck in something and struggling to get out, etc. Eyes can also fall out after severe infections. A goldfish can still function with one eye. If a fish loses all eyes, it can find food by smell but usually the other fish will get it first, or a predator will get the blind fish. The only treatment is prevention or treatment of infection if it occurs. Adding pond salt and MelaFix will prevent and help treatment if the eye socket becomes infection. If it becomes obviously so, the fish should be treated in a hospital tank with antibiotics.
